Oh, I see they are making it easy for y’all, too. lol .

Isn’t 12:01 a.m. May the 1st? So they give you a minute? Or do you get the whole 24 hours?

Hmm, DD just got assigned to the campus she did NOT want- 7-8 hours from family rather than 2-3 hours…we would visit monthly if it were 2-3 hours, not 7-8! She is appealing, not sure on what basis, but she figures she might as well ask…I figure if she gets it, it will be due to the waitlist people getting the smaller city placement, so she probably won’t know her site until June 1st or so.

Not sure what she will do about housing applications.

After being 15-17 hours away from home in University and now being the same for research the past year, it would be nice to have family support during med school only a couple of hours away, not that she wouldn’t be fine without it, just that she has already spread her wings and lived far from home for many years, and it would be nice to be near enough to see each other- we kinda like the kid ;)

But, whatever happens, she is glad she is instate and not back east She has visited many schools back there and it’s just not her thing, not her place…we’ll leave it to all ya’ll Texans to forge new lives in the NE!

Well, the joy continues here also. Another day another nada in the mailbox (e or irl) from FA. But, and this was great, D sent me an email from one of stragglers saying “Hey. You haven’t sent your deposit yet. What’s up with that?” D responded “Where’s my FA?” Their response “Did ya send in the forms?” “Yep. And y’all told me I was complete when I called a month ago.” “Well, huh.”

Oh joy. Rainbows and bunnies. Sweet sounds of lapping waves. Lollipops and moonbeams. Puffy white clouds. There, there. It will all be alright. ;)

Would you say the FA is better (more, quicker response, little lag, better support) at the in-states or privates?

I only ask since we will be where you are next year.

Kat

Well, I certainly can’t answer that. D has received a grand total of one package. She received a merit scholarship early on (about half of tuition and fees) and a $5K “gimmee” grant (that we were told at FA seminar was likely to decrease over her 4 years). Other than that she got a 5% interest loan for $1000, the subsidized Stafford for $8500, and the remainder in unsubsidized Stafford loans.

My prediction is that her other in-state choice will be all loans, no grants and hence…out. As to her numero uno, we really have no idea. We know their unit loan is @$20K a year. What they’ll use as a parental contribution and how they meet the need above those two numbers, I just dunno. If grants, it may be doable and it appears from the FA site that it may be. If not, and it’s mostly loans …well, my bet is she’s coming home.

Another student called her number one asking when they could expect word and was told they were busy working on packages for students attending second-look this weekend. Of course, my D starts finals Monday and couldn’t attend. Of course. Why would it be otherwise? lol

We filed a FAFSA “will file” in January and redid FAFSA as “filed” around April 14th. The in-state public school mailed out “everybody’s” package about a week later. They offered one school grant and the rest Stafford loans, BUT the finaid officer told me that is the schoolwide award, there is also a med school only finaid dept that will award additional grant info once final FAFSA’s are in and processed.

The FAFSA and NeedAccess were both in well before March 15 but admittedly, there were a couple of school specific forms that were not sent until late March, April 1st-ish.

Okay. Thanks guys. Son and daughter both are looking over the various web sites and their respective forms now to get an idea of where they will be money-wise. Knew about the unit-loan thing but only sort of. Son thinks he heard rumor that some of the schools might be lowering the unit loan amount.

So we’ll see. Thanks again. And the lack of packages (yet) says something as well about the various schools and the process itself.

Kat

I haven’t received any financial aid packages yet. If it wasn’t for the merit scholarships, I’d have no clue what I was looking at for next year, only two weeks away from having to decide.

FAFSA was in by March 1st, NeedAccess by March 15th, all tax returns / school specific forms sent in before April 1st. I met every priority deadlines but two (March 1st), but I’m waitlisted at those schools anyway.

I just don’t understand the thinking of these schools. Do they really think people will commit without knowing?

Well, we did, since it was instate and her first choice, so it is not critical, but it would be nice to know. DD is stressed enough trying to figure out Seattle & Spokane housing options knowing it would be one of those two, let alone trying to wait for financial aid. I guess we are all building character through this process.

Well, y’all have exceptional reasons, I’d say. I’d have committed , too. By the way, I happen to like Spokane. Spent a couple weeks there with a pretty gal while on a western walkabout fresh out of school. ;)

On SDN, I am hearing that some schools send out their scholarship awards by May 15th.
Some kids mention that they have heard from schools as late as the end of June!

Well, Pharmagal, since the students can only keep 1 acceptance after the 15th…<angry smiley=“”>. If that happens to one kid I know, she’s Dallas bound! No way she’s gonna commit to an unknown that could be $145K more than what she has already been offered.</angry>

Uh oh. Flashbacks are starting.

Nah. I was just going to my “special place”. Keeps me from getting too…uhh…too…uhh…well, actually it doesn’t. But it’s supposed to. ;)

a special place, indeed

Hey, hubbellsdad. It’s my party. I’ll ***** if I want to. You would ***** to if it happened to you. ;)

mudge

As of yesterday, potentially facing the same kind of situation with L.

I’ll PM you later.

Another day , another nothing. How common is it to be within 2 weeks of the deadline and have schools that have (apparently) sent out very few FA packages?

This is a poorly run set-up compared to UG FA. Some schools have been great about getting FA info to students when they can actually use it to decide between schools, or to attend a Second Look. Some suck at it. If I was med school administrator and was seriously trying to improve my school’s yield, this is where I would start.

For the next bunch in the chute, check the sdn posts on the specific school threads so you can be aware of when FA packages are sent.
