2009-2010 Med school applicants

346/$1.2M? She’s only applying to four schools?

Fee waivers.

1.2 million??? what!? did i miss a memo somewhere about the costs…i thought secondaries were only about 100 a piece

^ curm was being sarcastic  It sure as hell feels like $1.2 million sometimes haha

Just submitted! Feels good to have the personal statement and Work/Activities submitted where I can’t tweak anything anymore, haha. Verification seems to be taking around 5-6 days.

Congrats Steeler! I recommend not looking it over again - I found a mistake in my PS a few days after I submitted ( after reading the damn thing a million times lol). Just be happy its out of your control now :)

Well, AMCAS is now verified (no changes or surprises) and the last LOR was submitted to the “packet man”. She marches forward.

LOR packets have shown up. Secondaries are open at a few schools.

mudge

it is now real…good luck!

Grazie. She’s really excited about some of the changes at UTSW and BCM. And she’s getting MUCH more comfortable with her other Texas schools. I’m doing my best to have her keep the eye on the prize -any med school.

Money is pouring out at a rapid rate. Word to those coming up. Budget wisely, then double that. ;)

AMCAS was submitted over the weekend, what a relief. Despite numerous prior readings, she still found typos on small things just before submission and found items she had previously corrected were still wrong. Sometimes the “save” function seems to be a bit shifty, double check everything. DD will not look at it again so she does not have to see any missed typos!

Thanks, Curm, for the last weeks essay input and comments.

All the transcripts have arrived, not sure how that will work with verifying and that June 24th magical date. The SDN list shows 2-3 weeks to verify some people, but DD needed to take that time on her apps and they could not have done it without her final transcript, so that is the way we did it.

TX will be submitted today. Still missing the final transcript on them.

DD is debating DO apps, seems like it could be smart, but she is tired of apps and we have not put much time into researching those schools.

How do the secondaries work? Do you get unscreened secondaries as soon as you submit or as soon as you are verified? Or do you just go to their site to find them?

When TX goes in, we will officially be double what we thought we would spend!

Still waiting for 1 LOR at her school before submitting the packet and that is the same guy who is to fill out the TX form :(

And just wait until you have to send in yet more money with the secondaries…wish I could find a way to make money like that…:)

The best part is that you pay to submit a secondary, and then for a couple of schools, my son never heard anything!

all this talk about med school applications is getting even me stressed out, and i havent even started college yet… -_-

rofl, me too dude…

Curmudgeon, somemom, Steeler, eadad, my3sons, etc. – you all are great to share your stories with everyone! D is a year away from the process and it is fun to live vicariously through you – all the excitement without the terror!

When are these applications suppose to be done by?

First day to submit is early June of the year prior to matriculation.

my initial impression is that this would just be a waste since you are from texas. i dont remember what your daughter’s stats are (not sure if you mentioned them before) but with a good gpa and a 32+ MCAT and very friendly in-state schools you shouldn’t need to apply DO. There is also the question of whether your daughter would want to go to a DO school.

you won’t get any secondaries before june 24th and you do not need to be verified to get secondaries. starting june 24th AMCAS sends med schools your name the moment you submit so your daughter should expect secondaries to start rolling in beginning wednesday. i’ll bet you 5 bucks the first one in her inbox will be money-hungry columbia. It would be a good idea to start browsing secondary questions and thinking about them now but absolutely do not submit a secondary before you get an email invite!! many of these schools’ systems are pretty primitive and can get confused very easily. in terms of secondaries, for me about half of the schools i applied to just wanted to know if i had any familial connections to the school (which i never did of course) and then asked for my credit card number.

shraf, somemom’s D is applying to Texas schools but as OOS. Her MCAT (not as high as you remember) is what concerns her, hence the DO conversation. In Texas TCOM is very well-respected and I highly suggest she investigate it further since she is already doing the TMDSAS. It’s a real good school from what I see on SDN. Lot’s of Texas kids apply to it along with our allopathic schools. I know some are not as well regarded.

As to secondaries, the Texas ones are instantaneous for those that have them (UTSW, A&M, Tech) and D has done Baylor and Yale which are already open. The rest will start opening from now till the end of July. Some schools screen, but it appears most don’t.

MP, I’m still paying back for all the help the students here on pre-med forum and the parents have given my kid. It is a debt I can never fully repay. Just keep the ball rolling when it’s your kid’s time in the chute.;)

And somemom , thanks for the thanks but…we’re all in this leaky boat together. :)
