2009 AP Statistics Answer Thread

Now that the stats exam is over and we're allowed to discuss the FRQ questions, can someone who remembers the questions type up what they think to be the answers.

yes pls :)

For the first FRQ question, did you guys graph the data based on counts or proportions? Does it matter?

I did proportions. I think it does matter, because proportions are a more accurate way of indicating how many of each gender are included in each work situation. That is only because the number of boys and girl was uneven - if they had not been, count would have been fine, but because they were uneven, the proportion is more accurate, as it adjusts for a disparity in population or sample size.

I did frequencies, mostly because it was out of 100. While I understand that each group had different totals, I just figured that the disparity wasn’t that great. I would have used proportions if they came from different samples, i.e. girls added up to 200 while boys added up to 50, but I was assuming (subconsciously, I guess =P) that they polled 50 boys and 50 girls to make 100. If the directions for #1 say differently though, I stand corrected. (Note that even if you get part a wrong with the graph, you can still get a 3 out of 4 for the point because they don’t take your wrong answer and mark you off continually for it–if it carries over consistently, you only lose points for the first time you got it wrong. Yay :D)
