The Daily Herald reported today that Early Decision applicants to Brown are up 7% over last year and is one of few Ivies to see a significant increase.

interesting....any info on PLME?

yeah, I'd like to know too (about PLME)

mr_sanguine, did you apply ED to the program? if so, did you say you wanted to be bound to the school regardless of whether you were accepted into the PLME or not?

just wondering....I applied ED PLME and I didn't check the box for binding to the school; I dont know if this makes a really big difference or not

thanks!

i said no, i dont want to be.

i really have no idea how much of a difference it makes, but something tells me in the back of my mind that it does. They had my interviewer specifically ask me again if i wanted to change my answer to that. So...they musta thought it important.

Yeah, from what I've heard they would really rather take kids who would commit to Brown regardless of if they got in the PLME or not. For me, I fell in love with Brown first, and the PLME definitely an added bonus, but still a bonus. So, I applied ED and said I wanted to be bound to the school regardless of the program; that was actually a point on which my interviewer and I talked for quite a period of time.

That's not to say that they won't take any kids who check that box; I'm quite sure that they will. Good luck you guys :)

10 days!

How many PLMEs do they take a year? (I didn't apply as a PLME, but I'm curious)

They have approximately 60 spots each year, so I think they admit 110 or so out of 1400 maybe? Don't know about ED breakdown, though.

EDIT:
Ha, I actually just found some stats that are probably more exact than mine --
"As an example, in 2003-2004, there were 1,400 applicants to the PLME. Of that number, 103 were offered admission to the PLME and an additional 116 were offered admission to other Brown degree programs. In fall 2004, sixty-seven (67) will matriculate in the PLME, and 66 will matriculate in other Brown degree programs."

that's from http://bms.brown.edu/plme/Requirements.html

I don't know of any numbers for this year's PLME ED pool, but here's a tidbit from the December 4, 2003 edition of The Harvard Independent, citing the Brown Daily Herald:

PLME early applications rise for class of 2008 (December 1, 2003)

"Applications to the Program in Liberal Medical Education are up 20 percent so far this year, a 'significant increase,' according to Michael Goldberger, director of admission. The University has received 247 applications to date as part of the early decision pool, compared with 207 from last year."

So about a sixth of last year's PLME applications were ED.
