I got this with a 1520 SAT and no ACT... hmm.. not filling it out, though... waaaay too many essays. Congrats to all who got it and good luck to those trying to get to the next level!

One from my school this year...I think last year we had four!

Haha wow, I skimmed through it and recognized so many names. None of them from my state.

Thank you, TASP.

I'm applying from RI... 10/50 qualifiers from the state were from my high school!

Question for those in the application process - the "big" essay, about something/someone significant, has space in the form for nearly 11,000 characters (~6 pages?!). Are we expected to write that much? Most kids from my school seem to be writing about 2 pages, but I'm not sure if that will be considered underachieving.

HSsenior09 that's really interesting because I printed the forms out so my daughter could work on them before doing them online and the large essay says confine your response to the front and back of this page (in 11 point) and the top of the page is already in use so it looks to me like you have approx 1 3/4 pages. Don't know if this helps or makes it worse.

If I remember correctly, they base it off getting a 1600 (Math + Critical Reading).

I base this off the fact because I know someone with a 1600/2340 who was a candidate and someone with a 1590/2390 who didn't get it and I know someone with a 1600/2390 who did.

My S1 is on the list: on the merit of SAT 2400. Given his EC resume is rather thin - he certainly did not motivate and organize 1000 people for volunteer activities, nor did he solve world hunger problem. His passion (International Finance) for which he spends a considerable time and energy is not the kind of EC with competitions, awards, and proof, is it worthwhile to go through all the paperwork?

I know, the sensitive, considerate, and correct answer is "you never know", but I would like a realistic feedback.

6 candidates from our HS. I don't know what the cut off was. The same schools has 18 MNSFs.

I always thought the cutoff was 800 Math + 800 Critical Reading or 36 ACT or excellent artistic skills and that was it!
Many of you are focusing way too much on the Writing section which doesn't matter to the Presidential Scholars program.

I believe the cutoff varies by state - top 30 boys / girls in each state (or however many have that cutoff score). We had 3 students from our high school (the state only has 700k people) and they all scored 34 on the ACT.

I'm pretty sure its top 20 boys and top 20 girls plus artists and others for each state.

^^^That's what I thought, but Florida has more than 60 (plus the Arts ones). If there are more than 20 and 20 perfect scores, I guess they pick all of them.

Yeah there might be alot of ties or something.

How much do you think essays will be weighed compared to say awards? I'm just humoring myself by doing this. It's still an honor!

I dunno, but the essays are really annoying. The way they ask the first 4 mini-essays makes them seem somewhat like short answers, which makes me feel better. I hope that the awards count for more! 14 page app = too much after I told myself I was done with apps 2 months ago.

Greetings, fellow candidates...

Just another potential scholar here...rushing to finish his essays and get this thing in the mail...

...and praying that my school's bureaucratic guidance dept. gets its part to Iowa on time as well.

2-iron how long is your big essay?

Eh...about 1.75 pages double-spaced. Seems like that's roughly the length they want.

wait, so if you are a scholar don't you basically get a full-ride wherever you go? or am i really confused? i didn't make it, but four of my classmates did - so are major congrats in order here?

No, if your classmates are telling you that it's important and got them money, they were wrong. PM me if you need more info
Presidential Scholar is a fun honor for the kids who get it - but basically worthless in the money/college game
