2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

^ Thanks. I wonder if my school will receive/distribute the scores first before they’re posted online…

I’m still not sure if all schools have the scores now. I’m starting to think so since there is a report out by the College Board showing the curve.

Based on that curve, I’m hoping for a 225. I probably did slightly worse, but I tried to account for a few errors. Hopefully 77 CR, 75 M, 73 W. I can do better (I’m a sophomore, so I’ve got another shot), but I’d be happy with that score.

They must have at least processed everyone’s score if an accurate curve is out… So scores should come soon, if your school doesn’t have them yet.

“this word that multiple spellings”

Edit: Lucky post number 2400. :)

Silverturtle: You are over thinking the problem. Just because explanation for could be correct does not mean that explanation of is incorrect. Based on directions for taking the test, it is only the correct choice if it is wrong, and becuase it is not wrong, no error is the better choice.

Indeed, to prove that the answer is not “no error,” you only have to demonstrate that the use of the phrase “explanation of” in the sentence is incorrect, i.e. do not follow “the requirements of standard written English.”

Then is “explanation of” an incorrect usage? The issue is complicated, for no absolute authority exists on specific instances of English language usage, especially without an official (and authoritative) organization that maintains the standards. However, if no such usage can be found in texts that are generally acknowledged to be correct, the usage is most likely incorrect. Now consider the following definition and examples from the Oxford English Dictionary, a good English reference:

[quote]
of - prep.
XII. Expressing the relationship of the objective genitive. 41. After a noun of action.

1873 J. MORLEY Rousseau I. 344 The betrayal of a secret.
1888 *Athen

Ugh. These curves seem terrible. At this point, I did better freshman year. -_____-. ***.

/rant

I support your appeal, Silverturtle. Lol. Stick it to the man!

Plus, it was probably fun researching with the intention to prove the CB wrong.

who has the form W curve? :)

The schools should have score reports by now. My daughter took the test on October 28, two weeks after form W and S, and her school received the scores on Monday.
When they send them home is a different matter.

My daughter is still waiting for her results. She took the exam at a local private school, Form W. I was expecting the results to be mailed to our home because we homeschool. Has any other Michigan Homeschoolers received their results yet???

2009 PSAT/NMSQT results will be online in mid-December.

What do they mean by mid-December usually? Also, I remember last year I had to put in a certain code in order to access My Quickstart. The problem is the code was on the score report they sent to schools, so I still had to wait until late December last year.

So what I’m basically asking is can you see your scores with only your collegeboard account?

This is killing me…211 from FL, National Merit cutoff last year for FL was 211…does anyone think it’ll change. Based on the consensus of the difficulty of this test, I would say that if anything it may go down…but then again it may go up a point which would be absolutely horrible seeing as i got a 223 sophomore year…what do you guys think?
And silverturtle…i said before today i agreed with you about the explanation of/for question, but seeing as i actually put NE (i wouldve bet my life i put D), i would kindly ask that you do not pursue this any farther then one appeal. if your appeal does miraculously work, would they change the scores of those who got it right initially?

No it wouldn’t change the scores of people who got it right before.

Also TQSMNTASP I would consider myself lucky to get the score that falls right on the cutoff. My state’s cutoff was 218 last year (Virginia) so I’m freaking out…

we get our scores tomorrow morning!! so excited
prediction
CR: 74
M:79
W:73 (78 pending silverturtle’s success)
226-231

so i got my psat results back today and im from california
i believe the cutoff for last year’s semifinalist recognition was 218?
and i got a 218 this year -_-

does anyone think it will change to a 219?
because that would really suck. lol

^I’m hoping the cutoff will go down since the W test was harder than most of the other PSAT’s that have been administered.

What do you think the cutoff for Ohio will be this year?
