2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

Ingenium, I would consider a 215 in Florida pretty safe.

Erm, any reason why I’m not getting loaded with snail mail? I got a 229 and I’m pretty sure I signed the test with my home address, e-mail, and checked off “yes I want mail” and what not…I was kind of looking forward to the mail in a weird way :(.

monstor, I’m in the same situation. I gave my address and stated that I wanted mail, but I haven’t received anything.

Ditto, monstor and silver

same here. I could probably count the number of pieces of mail I’ve gotten on one hand. Maybe it’ll just be a while before it starts… or maybe the universities ran out of mail to send after delivering those piles of it I’m sure you all got as well last year lol

My school is ■■■■■■■■ and is holding scores until next year–I might call Monday and ask what I got though because it’s killing me.

I get mail from my SAT scores from last year but the only thing I’ve gotten from the PSAT is a TASP letter so I guess it’s a little early for colleges to be flooding us yet. Does anyone know if anyone’s gotten a TASP letter but not made NMSF?

229 here. And no snail mail yet in CT. Quick question for everyonoe. Has anybody even been getting a ton of emails to the account you gave on the PSAT? Because I sure have not.

My school always holds the scores until after winter break, kind of makes me sad although I can’t qualify for NMSF this year seeing as I’m a sophomore.

I know I missed at least one on the math section and 1+ on the other two sections, any indication yet of what that would yield. I’m hoping to improve over my 184 last year (got a 70 on CR, but like a 58 on M and a 56 on W). Hopefully my classes last year helped me improve my scores, at least I actually finished the test this year.

Curves: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/820273-confirmed-psat-2009-curves.html

Looking at last year’s cutoffs and their changes from the 2008 cutoffs (on a different thread), I counted exactly 25 states that went up, and 25 that went down or stayed the same. I also observed that larger states like FL, CA, TX, and NY seem to be the ones most prone to staying the same or going down slightly. Smaller, or less populated states seemed to be the ones with the sharpest (most acute…haha PSAT joke referring to that lobster passage) increases.

So like silverturtle said, even if the general net cutoff lowers, it is extremely unlikely, if not impossible, that EVERY state’s cutoff will go down…but one does get the feeling that most will.

Maybe this is all just wishful thinking, since i got a 211, the exact FL cutoff last year. Good luck to all my fellow Floridians on this thread…the two who recently posted scores of 214 and 215 should be fine though. Another thing…I go to a small private school that only maybe churns out 1 or 2 NMSF each year if any, but talking to friends form larger public schools on my area, it seems like some schools that usually get a handful may only be getting one or two this year. Of course, one cannot say whether this indicates anything, but hey it’s a start.

hm. And here I was thinking it was just my class here in Texas that was stu- erm, academically challenged compared to previous classes. Our first graduating class had 5 students (out of 940 :/) who were National Merit Scholars, dunno how many were semifinalists. This year’s senior class has a dozen semifinalists (class of over 1200). As a comparison, if the Texas cut off stays the same my class will have 4 semifinalists (though to be fair our class is only 700). We’d have five if the cutoff goes down…but I sort of don’t want it to heh

I’m not sure if my county has ever had a NMSF 0.o

I have a friend at our state’s major magnet school, and there was only one other person on his hall within a few points of a 200 or above and the school’s SAT average is almost a 2000.

I got 3 wrong on my writing and it was a 68…
is there a reason for this?

EDIT: I’m referring to post 419,
who got a 70 and with 3 wrong on writing

different form?

dolee, the poster you’re citing had Form W; you had Form S.

Ahhh soo happy.
I got a 226… 77 CR, 71 M, 78 W

:) Form W.

Hey, kind of off topic but has anyone received mail from colleges regarding their summer programs? I don’t know how they got my address (I put the wrong one on my PSAT) but I got mail from Caltech, MIT, Stanford, and various others regarding their summer scholar programs. Did anyone else receive these (just trying to gauge how “rare” they are).

Argh… I’m estimating that my PSAT score is a 219 here in California.
Anyone think the cutoff will be 220 or higher? That’s pretty harsh considering that this year’s tests and curves were a lot harder.
Where’s everyone getting the stat that test scores are down 25%?
I’m worried sick! I really want to go to USC and getting semi finalist status would greatly help with scholarships…
My stupid school won’t show scores till January :frowning:
Predicionts on CA’s cutoff? Much appreciated!

alihaq, I have received these letters as well. As to previous posters discussing the number of NMSFs at their schools, my school has experienced a similar downward trend. I go to a small private school with about 7-8 NMSFs a year (out of ~60 students) and this year it seems there will only be about 3-4. Good to know that mine is not the only school!

224 with 80 in reading

I’m shocked at my reading score. I fail at SAT reading so idk how I got this. Happy I made National Merit Semifinalist though (Maryland’s cutoff is like 219-220)
