A preview version of the 2010-11 Common Application has been posted at:

https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/News.aspx

Changes include a revised testing section asking for BEST scores, an infinitely easier occupation search, a combined work and activities section, and the ability to submit the NACAC fee waiver online.

The online version will go live on August 1.

I don’t like how there are 12 spaces for extra curriculars.

Thanks a bunch for posting this.

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately, I don’t like the new app.

Why the revised testing section asking for best scores? This encourages multiple retakes. Will colleges still consider the value of a high composite on one day?

I only have 7 or 8 strong extracurriculars. Don’t like the twelve spaces much…

Edit: Also, whatever happened to non-score choice? Will non-score choice schools only see all scores on our score reports?

I probably won’t append a resume now.

^It does fix that dilemma.

Silverturtle, I’m curious, how many extracurriculars are you extensively involved in?

If we define “extensively” as things that I am involved in for at least an hour each week, then six.

6 is a very strong number. Do most worthy applicants even have that many?

^^^^^^^^

be reminded though that the EC and Paid Work boxes are now joined together into 12 spaces.

Doesn’t make much difference, makes people more open with their choices about how many ECs and how many paid work positions they choose to report.

To everyone who is concerned about the expansion in the number of EC lines: don’t be! This change is not meant to imply that you should strive to fill all 12 lines. Your colleges will want to know what is most important to you. The only reason that there are more lines next year is because work and ECs have been folded together into one section, and the reason for THAT is so that students who count their jobs as their most important activities outside school can accurately convey that value.

I’m surprised at how short this application is… Only ONE essay? (you can obviously tell this is my first time ever looking at the common app)

There are more essays you’ll have to write depending on your uni’s supplements, which can be several :D

How many essays did last year’s common app have?

Do colleges expect us to fill out 12 things?

^ I doubt it.

Michigan is common app now, yay!

How do u guys feel about the change in the test score reporting area? You superscore it now (even for the ACT I believe) but most schools dont superscore the ACT. So I guess they would ignore that section?

^ It won’t really matter; schools use official score reports.

Ahh I only have about 3 activities that I’m really involved in during the year. If you put in my summer research that makes 4. I’m a failure >.< lol

^ Quality over quantity. :)
