2010-2011 Lucky year for TAG applicants

I spoke with several UC reps for schools for offer TAGs and they all mentioned how the transition to an online application has caused a huge surge in TAG applicants.

Next year all UCs with TAG agreement will be changing some of their requirements to TAG, including upping the 3.0 GPA minimum (there's a thread about this for SD).

So this year is probably the last where a 3.0 GPA will lock you into a spot at your choice UC w/a TAG! What timing for us applicants this year!

In addition, the honors coordinator at my college announced that all UCs are moving to holistic evaluation next cycle. I don’t know if this would also change TAG.

You can just say it… it keeps getting worse for students as schools have the ability to be more selective.

The recession means more budget cuts.
The recession means more HS grads are continuing to college.
The recession means unemployed individuals are going back to school.
CSU and UC are both having budget problems which means they might reduce their enrollment.
And just one final punch, 20 years ago, the birth rate was 20% higher than normal.

feedayeen <- wishes that he was born 2 years earlier

technically the recession is over

Technically. With gas $3.75 a gallon and my friends with masters degrees and PhDs I have a hard time believe the recession is over. No offense to you. I’m just saying.

okay, besides UCSD and UCSB who will have a TAG above a 3.0+,what other UC’s are going to increase their TAG?

I hope not Davis because that’s my second choice.

^ I spoke w/a Davis rep and yep, they’re are upping the requirement. Things are definitely getting tougher each year.

NOOO!!!..darn.I hope I get in this year then.my stats aren’t too strong this year and I’m barely holding on their TAG.

^ me too bro what are your stats?

I have a 3.0 with all my TAG requirements finished but missing some prereqs for my major. Also my major is impacted but hoping to get into my alt with TAG

I hate my stats…it’s a 2.98 GPA for Fall(although I took classes in Winter and now it’s 3.07).
I have the IGETC ,60 units done, and TAG approved by Davis but I’m missing some pre-reqs too.I don’t think my major is impacted since davis didn’t specify any required courses to be done.Unfortunately they were very vague on that.oh well, wait till decisions come out.

i mean we both just made the requirements, you have a 3.0 so you should be fine

really?thanks.what a sound of relief…for now.

For 2010-2011, does that mean that when I apply for my Fall 2012 semester this upcoming November of 2011, I won’t be affect and it is going to stay at 3.0?

No, it will change. All the new cutoff’s are going to be enacted during the next admissions period (Fall 2012). Sorry to all of those who are getting screwed by the system, but as the OP said, 2011 will prove to be a great year to transfer.

Sigh. It’s alright though, I would need a higher GPA than 3.5 if I wanted to transfer to UCLA or UCB anyways. Just seems like there’s more pressure to do so at this time.

I wouldnt say we are lucky… people who transfered back in like 2001-2005 had it made in the shade (2.8 for UCSD!).

It will be interesting to see how many acceptances are offered for 2012 based on the new 3.5 gpa requirement. Keep in mind this means people who DONT have TAG will need GPAs around 3.7-3.8 to have a shot.

Do you guys think that these upped GPA standards and “holistic” evaluation process will weigh heavily on high GPA students (3.9+)? My major is Political Science and I wanna go to Berkeley, I also have a state internship under my belt.

I’m really considering staying another year to save money, but if I get into Berkeley this year, I don’t know if I’ll get in again next year… I’m getting real nervous.

^ Good question. I think having such a high GPA of 3.9 helps that much more considering these upped GPA standards. That extra edge remains, especially with Cal and UCLA who don’t offer TAGs.

^^ For Berkeley? It’s already implemented a holistic system and does not have TAG. Other than a possible change in the admit rate due to its financial situation, this should not affect you at Berkeley.

Honestly, I think you’re wrong. Right now, the average admitted GPA for UCSD is something like 3.4, IIRC. I expect it to stay roughly the same. UCSD wants the flexibility to say no to lazy students with 3.01 GPAs, in order to open up spaces for 2.99 students who were busy taking care of their sick parent or whatever. Most 3.3-3.49 students will still be fine.

Let’s take a step back and pretend TAG didn’t exist. At what GPA would a UCSD applicant be considered “in” by us on CC? I’d say that at 3.5 or 3.6, the student would be practically guaranteed. So, that’s where the line should be drawn. Students with such high GPAs have an extra incentive to apply to UCSD because of the guarantee. Students with lower GPAs will still be competitive.

Under the current system, a 3.1 with TAG is guaranteed admission, while a 3.3 who couldn’t complete his UC and English courses a full year early is borderline. How does this make sense?
