2010 Decision Thread for Deferred Applicants

i goto hillsborough mightynick, u?

i knew you lived somewhere near me!

I go to Montgomery High. :)

Pangi: Yes, you are supposed to send a deposit to another school. You should never bank on a school where you were placed on the waitlist. You make a commitment somewhere else. If the waitlist school is still enough of a draw for you that you'd still consider going there (and lose your other deposit) should they ask, then by all means accept the waitlist. But don't fail to secure a place elsewhere. There is no conflict here--some people accept places on several waitlists. But they still send a deposit in to their first choice among their outright acceptances.

Regarding the other speculations: Recall that not all applicants (or deferred applicants) post here. There are a few dozen posters here, among over 20,000 applicants. The people in this thread do not represent the entire applicant pool or deferred pool. It would be a stretch to draw conclusions from the small sample who post here and have shared their decisions.

Yeah but what are the chances that nobody posts an acceptance? It seems pretty unlikely to me.

i think that hoedown has a valid point, ryan your also assuming that everyone that was orginally posting on CC came back to report their respective decisions..from what i see a lot of people use this forum up until they get their decision, then never look back..just a thought.

i was accepted today! this is the first time i have heard a decision from U Mich ( i applied on the deadline) so i wouldn't classify myself as "deferred".. nonetheless if was accepted today! yay!

well, i guess that takes away the theory of those that received a "decision in mail", that means rejection :(

It may be likely that they are posting acceptances friday, and they posted all of the waitlists/rejections today.

ryan- i like your optimistic thinking lol, i hope your prediction proves true.

well, "decision in the mail" was considered rejection, ahh, this is killing me!!!

I don't understand why they just don't reject applicants instead of doing this waitlist dance. DS applied in October, deferred in Jan, now waitlisted - what's the point? I don't see what UMich has to gain by keeping him (and so many others) on a list. DS is more than happy with his final choice, so I'm not complaining here, just genuinely baffled.

Well, I get the impression that if Michigan was a private school, things might be different.

This doesn't affect your situation with Michigan, of course, because you're not in-state, but there is a very strong sense of entitlement among some families--they absolutely believe they have a right to attend the flagship university of the state (not just in Michigan--this seems to be true other places as well). For some of these families, a waitlist is a lot more "acceptable" to them than a rejection. I suspect this contributes to some public school's willingness to let the waitlist be bigger than it needs to be otherwise.

Of course most applicants don't know whether they're on the waitlist because they just missed the cut, or whether they fall into the group who probably doesn't have much chance (and who would have been rejected if the school had more cutthroat policies). I used to think most students liked to assume they were near the top, but more and more (at least on CC) I'm hearing that students assume they were among the candidates who should have been rejected.

Hoedown, could you please explain the waitlist process? How do they decide who gets accepted off the waitlist?

Also, would sending in any additional materials increase your chances?

I don't have enough knowledge about the waitlist process. I don't think sending in more materials would up your chancces, because you don't know what criteria they will use to take students from the waitlist (should that happen).

According to the site, when a spot opens up for someone on the list, EVERYONE on the list is reevaluated (since it's not a ranked list) based on the same criteria as before to decide who gets admitted.

I think there are a lot of people like cadreaminnd as opposed to accepted deferrees, people who were never deferred but found out their acceptance around the time you'd expect a deferred applicant too. I know that in my school, a lot of kids were accepted a couple of weeks ago, but they were never deferred and thatw as actually the first time they heard back from Mich. Maybe this is why so few deferrees are being accepted as opposed to previous years...Just my speculation.

I got waitlisted too...

the admissions lady when i called said they accepted deferred students, so i dont know whats going on...she didnt exactly give me statistics cuz she said "i dont know" when i asked for #s

Yeah waitlisted...... applied October too... looks like I'm going to USC.

lol waitlisted
