wow...that makes no sense at all.

My dad called the admissions office to kind of complain bc I had to wait from october to get waitlisted and they said the process didn't change and I got waitlisted bc my gpa wasn't high enough.
They also said that I have very small chance getting accepted...
I personally know several people that got waitlisted and some of them had 3.8 and 3.9 and 29 and 30 on their act so I thought they were just waitlisting a lot of people this year but maybe not...

It would be fair to say that this year, U-M waitlisted some students of a high calibre that it does not usually waitlist (but rather, accepts).

I also went and checked the calendar because so many have been talking about Michigan being later this year. That's not the case, either. Waitlist offers went out at essentially the same week as this, the last two years.

hoedown, anyone last year get accepted as a deferred?

checked yesterday morning early - after being deferred since Jan. Said the decision was in the mail - assuming that's a big NO, but will wait and see.

Check your online status, a new link, VIEW DECISION should be up

^yeah I think we've all seen our decision by now.

I just called Michigan to see why I was waitlisted. According to the counselor, my SAT's were WELL below the average SAT of the applicant pool. I scored 2130 (1400), which I though was well above the average, but apparently not. He also said that there is a large possibility they will goto the waitlist.

colleges are getting ridiculous....even UMD has an average SAT of 1360 (old)....so its no surprise that Michigan's average SAT is above 1400.

CCRunner, i believe they are feeding you BS. I was accepted with only a 1330(2000) and not a spectacular GPA of 3.7 Unless you applied EXTREMELY late, a 2130 should have been enough for UM

I was also accepted into UMD-Scholars with that 1330, so i don't think a 1360 can be their average SAT score.

Where did you see that the average SAT was 1400? That must be wrong.

it could be average sat for engineering departmnet

I bet he was talking about the average SAT for out of staters, which I bet is well in excess of 1400.

Applied late december, app completed around early january. I've never heard back from them although I emailed about 3 times.

Today I actually called, the lady there said asked me my app id, and she kinda mumbled something along the line.. "hum.. i can't seem to find..hold on please", then like 5 minutes later, "your decision will be sent out today"

Right after that, I saw "view my decision" link, and apparently I am waitlisted.

2270 SAT, 800, 790, 750, SAT ii's, 4.0 GPA(UW) with full IB (rank 1/517). Quite a few people from my school applied and got accepted a long time ago. Their GPAs range around 3.6-4.0 ish and SAT 1800-2100 ish.

Something must have been seriously wrong with my application, but I'm not sure what exactly it was.

I'm not staying on waitlist, I got into stanford, washU and cornell with essays that were very similar to the ones I used for Umich.

haha rosenkav UM must have been on crack when they waitlisted you

i was out of state, and got in with a 1330 SAT (out of 1600). umich seems VERY random. and even though i got in, it kind of makes me mad so goodbye umich.

well i hope everyone on this thread can agree on one thing
F Michigan!!!

totally agree kidA...

F Michigan.

their admissions process makes no sense whatsoever.

This whole thing is so ridiculous. We were not expecting any great news at this late date, but so disgusted with having to wait this long for an 'official' word. S viewed decision link today, and was also waitlisted. Same story, applied within their early guidelines (Nov 1/complete Dec 1), followed all the rules; others at same HS with similar numbers heard within 6 - 10 weeks; S gets "deferral of admissions decision" (hunh?) letter, basically hung out to dry all these weeks. Very very disappointed with their admissions process - not how we would expect any candidate to be treated. Don't care if there are more applications than ever in UM's history - they should have been prepared for it, with the upward trend these past few years. Really don't care if there is a dorm being renovated, so fewer spots overall. What I do care about is my S's app being given the same care and consideration that he completed it with, in an appropriate timeframe! One thing we were able to find out is that although the website stated his app was complete 12/1, it was not logged in by an admissions counselor until more than 2 weeks later...and it was confirmed that that was unusual. So that put him later in the review process by those two weeks, and may have cost him his admission - but we'll never know, will we...

My husband and I are actually going to write a letter requesting a refund of the application fee - we feel that these kids were literally disrespected through the process by this school. Either say yes or no, not 'maybe' for weeks. The only way we knew to check the online today was through this website...not even the courtesy of an e-mail (again, don't tell me how many they would have had to send - it's their responsibility to keep applicants apprised).

Wait, I get it - they just don't care, do they???

to MightyNick, i applied around mid November, and the online thing said it was completed in early January. I really feel terrible because all of these people with stats as good, or better than mine are getting waitlisted and everything...I honestly wish i could give my spot to somebody as/more deserving as i doubt i will be attending UMich.

remark_gi...i totally agree with you.

and i don't see how anyone can defend michigan's admission process. The application fee is $65, and i'd expect them to do a better job. I think they didn't even re-evaluate our applications after we got deferred....if they had, i wouldn't be seeing people with 2200+ SAT scores and solid GPA's being wait-listed.
