2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

I got a 730 (72%) on the GRE Biology… Is that even worth sending to schools? I’ll have to send it to Scripps, but for schools like UCSF and Rockefeller that recommend submitting subject scores, what should I do?

How about 80th percentile for top schools? From past threads some say don’t send it if it’s below 95th, others 85th, some even 80th…

That sounds reasonable. If only it weren’t for all of the plant questions… Sigh.

Thanks!

I spoke with a professor of mine whom sits on an admissions committee. I don’t think any or our scores are going to “help” us exactly. Barring a 97-99% it doesn’t really matter as long as it isn’t terrible. She didn’t give a hard number, but my guess would be 80%. I wouldn’t send that 72% anywhere that didn’t require it. And I wouldn’t spend more money on additional score reports for any of our scores in the 80’s %.

Just my two cents.

I think depends on GPA and your undergrad institution too. If your GPA is good but Subject GRE not so good… don’t send it! But if it is >80-85, and you are coming from less known school or have a GPA that’s less than A- (where I come from, 80 = A-) or whatever, the equivalent, it might be worth sending. If it doesn’t add to your app, don’t send it.

I don’t know though… I called at Harvard earlier to ask a question about the general GRE and the guy said that I should definitely take the subject, which means they probably really want to see a score for that. I would think that anything in the 80th percentile or above is pretty decent, and that schools would prefer to see something like that because if you don’t report anything they probably would assume that you either a) did much worse than that or b) thought you would do much worse than that and didn’t take it. anyway I wouldn’t send it to schools if it is optional, but if they say strongly recommend (i.e UCSF, harvard) I think a score in the 80s should be reported.

I never took the subject GREs but I am still applying to UCSF. I figure this may not be too critical, hopefully…since they dont require it anymore. Besides, its too late to take them now. Will not taking them be a disadvantage?

I think it’s safe to say that most people’s opinion is that, if your educational background is sound, the subject GRE can only hurt (if you do poorly), not help (if you do well).

If the strength of your undergraduate curriculum is unknown (or nonexistent), then not having a GRE score may be a hindrance.

72% in sGRE bio is not the end of the world. If the school requires or strongly recommends sGRE, then you should submit it. My friend made it to Penn with ~60% sGRE biochem.

Can you send in your transcript before you submit an application online?

I sent my transcripts out a few weeks ago but I still haven’t submitted my applications yet… I hope they won’t throw my transcripts out!!!

Plus, I wrote my GRE in early October but I still haven’t receive my score report yet–^ I am so annoyed! How long did it take you guys to receive your report?

I sent all of my transcripts and I will submit my apps in the next week or two. Of course it is okay, it doesn’t make sense for it not to be. I wrote my GRE Oct 17 and got the score report on Tue (10th) but I’m in Canada, so it might travel one or two more days, maybe.

Shannonista, you should have gotten your GRE report within 14 days of testing. Try logging on to ETS to make sure that they are recorded there. You might have to make a phone call to figure out what is going on.

Has anyone started to hear back anything from the programs yet?? I am getting really anxious waiting to the point that I was thinking maybe I should add 1 or 2 more schools while I still have time…lol!

Update on my profile.

Weill Cornell

I wouldn’t worry yet - I had my apps in super early and heard from the first one (sinai) on 12/20 of that year.

If you look at last year’s thread, the first interview requests occurred at the end of the first week in December. Many programs made contact with students before Christmas, but just as many waited until January and February. I started this thread early because Pharmagrl fielded a request for an interview in pharmacology.

You might want to look here to see which programs notified early, keeping in mind that this year may be different. It’s a monster thread, so be prepared. :)

Congrats yaygrady…you are almost done now…I haven’t still submitted a single app yet…but am finishing everything by this weekend.

yeah yaygrady, was that non-profit vaccine organization the institute for one world health (iOWH)? (probably not, but if so, what did you do for them?)

Thanks! Actually…I work for Aeras Global TB vaccine foundation…we make new TB vaccines…fun times!!

I am getting a bit worried tho…since I have been out of school for almost 1.5 years now…w/o any pubs and I didnt take subject GREs as well…! And my GREs are not too hot either…considering other ppls stats from last year and this year! I should’ve taken it again while I still had time! I am just hoping for the best…! I am thinking maybe I should add 1/2 schools that are mid-range!

you will be fine yaygrady! GRE subject test is not that important for the admissions even though most of the schools recommend it. I know grad students here who absolutely bombed it (and send the scores) but got accepted to almost everywhere they applied to. Actually I studied for the exam, but after talking to these people I absolutely had no motivations of payin 150$ to register and then go through a horrible stress…

Hey yaygrady, in your application to stanford, did you upload your CV? as an additional document? there they say it has to be of one page.
