2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

I got an invitation to Albert Einstein School of Medicine yesterday :)

@ GNC2: I don’t think so. I got Jan 14-15 or Jan 21-22 options. I applied to the Open Program.

GNC2: For Sackler, they gave me options of Jan 14th & 15th, Jan 21nd & 22rd, or Feb 4th & 5th… I applied to the neuroscience track.

Safetypin, congrats on Princeton!!! Do you mind posting your stats here? I looked last night but couldn’t find them.

Collegebound, do you mind posting your stats too? What track did you apply to? Congrats on your interviews! I haven’t heard from UCLA (neuroscience track) but some people have heard from ACCESS already.

On the Sackler interview, do you know how many people they accept out of those they interview? I would be thrilled to get in there.

I am applying to neuroscience programs and here are my stats:

Cum. GPA: 3.39, Major GPA: 3.4
GRE: 630Q/610V/5.0A; no subject test.

Congrats to everyone on the interviews!

I have a few questions for you guys:

I am going to be out of the country from Jan 4th-17th, on the 19th I have my GSK interview in NYC. I plan on staying in New York form the 17th to the 19th. Does anyone have any suggestions on cheap hotels in NYC (preferrably upper esat side?). Also, can I contact that graduate director at GSK at let them know I’m coming in from out of the country? I’m probably going to be jet lagged like crazy, and I’m going to try to “reset” my clock in a day, but I doubt it will work haha. I just think giving my interviewers a heads up would probably be a good idea.

Lastly, for those of you with GSK interviews (or previous years), when are they going to contact us about arrangments? Since I’ll be out of the country I am trying to see if I should contact them about it early, or have a friend handle it for me. Any advice?

Anyway, Hotel ideas, ways of circumventing jet lag, and any advice on packing for an interivew and 12 days overseas would be greatly appreciated.

GCN2: My husband and I always find places through craigslist when we visit NY – for instance someone is going out of town and rents their nice apartment to us for cheap. We also stay in hostels here and there (but have mainly done that in Europe/Asia, not the States). They can be dirt cheap so it kind of depends on your level of comfort – I think you can check hostelworld.com. I don’t know what to tell you about letting the interviewer know. Momwaitingfornew or molliebatmit will probably have the answer to that one…

About the jet lag: it depends on how far you are going (Japan for instance is impossible to circumvent feeling like crap – Russia is pretty tough too). Europe, you can usually stay on your schedule with a 6 hour difference. Just stay up really late there and sleep really late (you’ll get off a little but not that badly over 12 days). You can take the supplement melatonin to induce sleep when you need to although that never works for me.

Have fun!

I wouldn’t give them a “head’s up,” although it might make for a good icebreaker during some of the small chat segments of your days. First, I doubt that information will get disseminated to your interviewers, and second, it sounds too much as though you expect to underperform and so are forming your excuse ahead of time.

As for jetlag, even Asian jetlag, my tried-and-true remedy is Advil PM. I take it about 30 minutes before I expect to go to sleep, and it keeps me asleep for at least six hours, often up to eight. Do this for three nights straight – four, if you’ll be coming back from Asia. (Melatonin never works for me.) The only downside is that you need to set a reliable alarm clock. If you will be staying in a hotel, ask for a wake up call as a back-up.

I think you’ll be stoked enough about the interview to perform well.

@GCN2

They haven’t contacted me regarding the interview yet, but I assume that is coz its a video interview…they said they will mail me the schedule n stuff soon

I applied for Molecular/Biochem at Berkeley, Stanford, UCSD, Wisconsin-Madison, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and JHU. I haven’t gotten any interview invites at all. Am I screwed? It seems like Wisconsin and Berkeley have already sent invites out and so has Princeton???

lifesciencesgeek:

Don’t worry! They seem to do it in waves so you should be hearing from them within the first couple of weeks of January (after holiday break).

nah, it’s not too late…but it’s a bit nerve wracking.

regarding princeton…all 3 of my LOR writers are princeton phd alums. i’ve met with their advisors, two of whom are on the qcb adcom. do you think that helps with my chances?

Thanks so much for the advice guys. Not to be obnoxious, but several profs were like “you’ll at least be competitive everywhere and I’d be surprised if you didn’t get interview invites almost everywhere you applied.” And I haven’t gotten any yet! So I’m kinda freaking out :frowning: I guess I should wait and see and stop stressing, that won’t do much I guess.

Is anybody else in a similar boat?

I only have one invite out of the 6 schools I applied to. I am also waiting to hear from Berkeley and Princeton MCB. Hopefully, there will be more invites for both programs. So I am in a similar boat.

same here.

PS. MolSysBio, I would assume have LOR writers that are Princeton alums might help? I mean I think it matters more what these ppl do and how they know you? Personally 3 of my 4 LOR writers were alums of schools I’m applying to. Not sure if they actually said anything school dependent.

i dunno, i’ve met them at conferences / talks and i’ve even visited the school, so we’ll see.

Similar situation here…I’ve only heard from one school out of 9 I applied to so far. I doubt I will get interviews at most of them, despite 2 of my letter writers saying I should hear back from most of the schools. None of my letter writers are big flashy names either, and though one claims to have connections, I don’t believe that it means anything. I know I can remove UCSF, UCSD, and Cornell(Weill) from my list because interviews have already gone out for those schools, but the others I applied to haven’t started notifying yet as far as I know. I just hate the waiting game.

You might check and see if they would be able to accomodate you in their hotel block for the 17th to the 19th. I would assume they would have booked the hotel block for at least the night of the 18th.

Typically you will make your own flight arrangements, then will be reimbursed after the interview weekend. If you’re concerned about being out of the country, you can definitely contact the program’s staff and ask whether you should book your own tickets or whether they have a preferred travel agent they’d like you to use.

My hope is not lost yet for Berkeley MCB. Apparently they have two interview weekends. I am just speculating, but it seems like their program gets a lot of applications, and I would assume they send out invites in waves.
