2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Also FYI, Rockefeller acceptances are starting to show up on gradcafe, so be on the lookout for fedex if you’re waiting on that.

PI grants from the NIH can be used to pay for international students-- but most departments fund you for the first year or two through training grants, which can only go to US citizens. The money for internationals has to come from somewhere else, and in a lot of departments there aren’t that many other places for the money to come from. The state schools in particular are sensitive to this, as they don’t have the huge endowments of other top universities. Rockefeller, with its billion dollar endowment, can afford to accept people regardless of nationality, even though they pay for the US citizens off of a training grant. This year, with the endowments even at the very top schools down a huge percentage and the departments having to figure out across the board cuts, it may be that they can accept fewer internationals.

acceptance without interview? that would be nice. :)

Yep, I do have a thing against the West Coast at this point. Mostly that my husband is about to graduate from law school in DC and the economy in California is collapsing. It’s definitely worth reconsidering when I finish my PhD.

Weill Cornell and some of my safeties are finally got back to me. I had to turn down Prinecton for Weill Cornell- no biggie, as there were really only a few people there that had projects that interested me.

UW-Madison Neuroscience is killing me! They’ve sent out interview invites and rejections, and I haven’t heard anything but my application is complete. Is it time to call them?

Also, does anybody know if Columbia neuro and Yale BBS neuro are done sending out invites?

^My understanding is the Columbia and Yale are done. I do not know about wisconsin, though their interview weekends are back to back, not spread out. Good Luck.

Has anyone heard from Tufts Sackler?

Did anyone apply to U of AL Birmingham PBMM or Baylor COM TBMM?

Accepted to Rockefeller

@txsoccer
No I have not heard anything from them. I applied to the Immunology department. I think every department does its own interviews.

@txsoccer
I just asked. They have not finished sending the notification for interviews yet.

Does anyone know if the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign interviews? I can’t find anything about interviews on their website.

for everyone who seems to be contacting admissions people asking about interviews- how do you do this politely so as not to seem rude? i’d like to email a couple of programs i haven’t heard back from yet, but am not quite sure what to say. thanks!

@ kvscience - i write:

" Dear ____

I have applied for admission in Fall 2010 for the _____ PhD program. I was wondering if the admissions committee has begun to make any interview invitations as of yet, or if they are still in the process of reviewing applications?

Thanks in advance"

if they have, they’ll probably tell you what stage they’re at…seems okay to me

I just called Columbia Neurobiology and Behavior and got a really creepy two-minute long beep and no answer… :P

Anyone have any news on the Stanford Cancer Biology program interviews?

Thanks

i’m wondering about cancerbio @ stanford too…

on another note, i just got my official tetrad decline letter…oh well. was pretty much expecting this.
