2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@mollieb
lol. no doubt, your numbers are good if you’re keeping track. if i may ask, are you responsible to keep track of numbers for “official” reasons or you just doing it for fun?

one more thing, just by any chance would you know the % of ppl who accept their offers for harvard bbs? that would give us a better pic of how many invites are sent out in a given year…

thnx for all the help!

@RDWRER: Sure…

Undergrad/Masters: public university in NY
Major: Dual BA/MA in Biology w/ conc. in Biotechnology
GPA: 3.9 (4.0 scale)
GRE: 770Q (87%) and 680V (96%)
Research: 2 years in Molecular Immunology lab at home institution
1 summer internship in Neurobiology lab at top tier institution
HHMI 2 year fellowship
Publications: none
Presentations: ABRCMS Conference, RCMI Annual International Symposium

Just because I like statistics. :slight_smile: The program admins send out a list of new G1s every year, so I’ve just been keeping track since my first year. Useful data for occasional CC flame wars about LACs vs. public vs. private vs. what-have-you.

I can only estimate the number of offers made by looking at the number of students who attend the recruitment weekends, because I know neither the actual numbers of offers given nor the yield.

As I said earlier, my estimate would be there there are around 50 recruits at each of the two recruitment weekends, but 1) I am a neuroscientist and have difficulty counting past -59mV without the use of a computer, and 2) I typically attend the swanky dessert event only during the second recruitment weekend, which may or may not have the same attendance as the first weekend.

@ jambromr:
Wow, I look forward to meeting u in Harvard !! As you know that…bph program is very small and unpopular…and also, it seems like that…actually, this program’s major interest is not similar with other many biomedical sicience programs…(I think that actually, bph is not included in biomedical research part…) so I’m very surprised that bph is ur first chioce despite u r international student! I think that you are really happy to help other people and enjoying volunteer works… like me!!
What about Upenn…do they also have similar program? I don’t know much about Upenn’s public health program…can you tell me about it???

I really want to meet u in Harvard soon !!

Hey,guys, I’m a foreign student.
I’m just wondering if Baylor College of Medicine is a good school for research.
Because it seems not many people in CC apply to Baylor, and for those who apply, they usually regard Baylor as kind of safety school. And there is saying that Baylor is now in terrible financial crisis and wanna merge with Rice or Baylor U. But I hear disease research and translational research are their strength.
Quite curious how you guys see this school? Worth trying for graduate study at BCM?

In my opinion, BCM is already a very good choice for international applicants for many of the top grad schools, e.g. UCSF, Rockfellor recruit very few foreign students. And UTSW is defintely a better school than Baylor if you want to go to Texas.

@jaimeking

actually , I only applied to Harvard, yale and Johns Hopkins for public health, and in other schools, I applied to their biomedical programs - immunology and such

as u said, the BPH program is pretty unique- it offers exactly what I want to do.
if I don’t get in there, i’ll still be happy to do biomedical research in other schools but man, i’m so close to my dream school that I don’t even want to think about other alternatives!

@neuronguy
I am not in the US, so what I will say is based on what I read/know from my professional experience (I’ve never been to BCM nor know faculty there “in person”).
In my area of interest (virology) there are great researchers there, very productive, and actually, int’l references (two of the Mol Vir. program are very well known and respected people in the virology area I work with).
I was not aware of the financial problems they were having, I really hope it is not that bad, since I’ll be interviewing there soon, and am seriously considering going there.
I wouldn’t consider it a safety school, actually, from all the 13 schools I applied, it is one of my top choices.
Maybe someone that has attended school in the US (even better, in TX) has a more practical view). But as far as I know, BCM seems to be pretty good, in research, and hopefully, in education too.

Thankfully I can finally stop worrying that I won’t get an interview. Now it’s on to worrying about whether or not I’ll get in anywhere. So who fro the group is going to interview at Hopkins for CMM this week?

Update on my apps:
Interviews: JHU, Emory, UAB
Waiting: Baylor, UW-Seattle, UT Southwestern and UM-Baltimore
Rejected: None

I find it hard to believe that Baylor is in financial troubles. The UT schools are typically the last to go down due to their enormous (oil-made) endowments. But maybe I’m wrong.

Jambromr,
I was contacted on January 8th by email for the Upenn interivew. I’m pretty sure they notify in waves.

Ceclarlineto, Woot! congrats, I’ll see you in Chicago!

See you today phDhopeful!

@ biomed2010

I will be at Hopkins CMM this weekend. First interview! Look forward to getting to meet some of the people from this forum.

@mollieb

sent a pm, tell me if you get it.

anyone going to seattle this week for uw neuro?

@biomed2010 & washu2010

I’ll be there as well. I’m taking a red-eye flight to Baltimore today. kinda nervous since this is also my first interview.

Just received an interview invite from Notre Dame for the Department of Biological Sciences :)

Are schools usually willing to reschedule interviews at a student’s request? I’m asking b/c I have invites from two places I want to visit during the same weekend.

Yes, if the school has more than 1 interview weekend, you can ask if one can be rescheduled. I was given choices on dates for most of the schools I am interviewing at and the school that did not have any choices did end up having more than one interview weekend. I personally would keep the interview date for the school you want to go to more and reschedule the other, but I don’t know if that really makes a difference.

Does any know of graduate programs in the biological sciences (CMB or biochemistry) still accepting applications?

@ biomed2010, washu2010 and Selpunca

I will be there too! Look forward to seeing you all.
