I heard from Yale Microbiology on Dec. 15. My interview is Feb. 4-7. I’m interviewing at UW-Seattle the following weekend for microbiology. Good luck with your interviews!

@microst

Thanks for the info. Good luck on your interviews as well. =)

GPA at time of application: 3.68
Major GPA: 3.74
GRE: 12XX
Work in an immunology lab for a year and half. Three conference abstracts, three poster presentations. No peer-review journal.
PM me if you want more information.Thank you.

has anyone heard from the MVP (Micro/viro/parasitol) program at UPenn, or know about the status of their interview requests?

Just wanted to point out that this information is NOT correct (no offense Serric, I’m sure your intentions were good). I received an invite to interview Jan 25-26, but also had the option of selecting 2 other dates, Feb 1-2, and a of later date (I think Feb 4-5 but it might have been later than that). That said, it’s getting late if you haven’t heard from them by now. But who knows!

@dengue2011

Here’s my stats:
3.8 Masters GPA, Top 3 Canadian University
3.2 Undergraduate GPA, Top 3 Canadian University
680V, 720Q, 5.0 GRE
About 3-3.5 years research experience (including Masters)
2 conference posters, 2 abstracts, 1 manuscript to be submitted.

Also, not sure of the DMS interview. I know BBS doesn’t have an interview, btu I think DMS Viro would have one.

I still haven’t heard from any university, including UPenn (@andy251). Apparently Yale and AEM have already sent out some interviews, so the candle’s running low on those two. Sitll hoping for a spot at Harvard and/or UPenn.

Also, did any of you guys email any professors after sending out the application to the respective schools? Some people said I should, some said I shouldn’t. Maybe a bit too late now, but what do you guys think?

@thetsb: I emailed quite a few professors, and only one ever responded. Luckily, he is at UT Austin where I will be interviewing and we are already planning to meet up there. =) I found that most professors won’t really bother to reply unless you are already in and they have room in their lab.

Heard from Wake Forest Microbiology and Immunology today. Offered an interview by email but they are sending a letter in the mail too.

Interviews: Duke, Northwestern, U Chicago, U Penn, Drexel, Wake Forest
Acceptances: Vanderbilt, MCG
REjections: WashU
Waiting: Emory, SLU, UNC Chapel Hill

The Stanford Biosciences office told me their programs will continue to make interview offers through the second week of February. Now I can worry about this two weeks longer than I thought at most I would! :p

@trachemysscripta

Yeah, same for me as well. Emailed a few profs, only a couple of them responded saying to contact them in case I get an interview.

I emailed professors AFTER being accepted for an interview (and after I had received an itinerary) because I had tried a couple of months ago to email a lot of professors and I got very few responses. Professors will DEFINITELY respond to you once you have been accepted for an interview so that is a great time to ask 2-3 people from the program about their research and just introduce yourself. The schools generally handle your itinerary after you give a list of preferred faculty members, so if you find that someone you want to talk to has been left out, contact them and ask to meet with them during your ‘free times’ during the interview weekend.

Basically, the professors probably will not want to spend time conversing with someone who might not even get in.

I emailed a lot of people before even applying - and most replied. Funny enough, 2/4 places I’m interviewing, I didn’t email at all (and it is generally a worser fit for me). The other two, I think it helped (but not in any major way, maybe made them remember me?). I didn’t get invites in places were I contacted and gotten positive nice replies from people. So, I don’t think it harms you or not, I didn’t do it out of thinking it would benefit me.

@LTP405: Okay - neat! I’ll definitely say Hi if I see someone from UK :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m interested in early sensory processing, neural circuits mediating sensory processing and motor outputs, information processing in small neuronal networks. Would love to stay with c. elegans, but I’m excited to switch model systems yet again for my PhD.

@Mace: You are probably right, they don’t want to waste their time. I got lucky in that the head of my department (who also wrote me a letter of rec) knew some people in the program so he was able to make calls on my behalf. I found that networking can really help you, and I’m glad I was able to contact one professor at least who seemed interested in having me rotate into his lab.

@oncogene: plane tickets, etc for reimbursement info. printouts on profs i’m talking to. maps of the area. interview itinerary. things like that.

am i missing anything??

Well I’ve been searching around for anything that would give me an indication of what to expect, I hate waiting! I’m applying to neuroscience programs. Here’s my stats, any encouragement is welcome and best of luck to everyone applying!
UG - Whitman College, BA Psych 3.7
GREs 800M 660V 5.5W
Worked summers at a Stanford neuroimaging lab, worked since Aug 08 in another Stanford neuroimaging lab
Applied: Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, WashU, NYU, Columbia, MIT
Interviews (so far I hope!): UC Berkeley, UC Davis
Rejections: WashU
Waiting on the other 5…

@influenza
I applied to Baylor (mol vir/microbiol), Northwestern (IGP), U. Illinois at Chicago, U. Maryland Baltimore, Weill Cornell (micro & mol pathogenesis - way out of my lead…), Princeton (mol bio - that too way out of my lead…), Emory, U Florida Gainesville (IDP), VA Tech, MSU, UT Southwestern, UT Austin, Duke (microbiology dpt).
I have just heard from Baylor (interviewing there on Feb. 12-13). I know that UM Baltimore and UF are reviewing my application in January, so I still have hopes on these two. All the others: no news… not bad, not good, nothing… Extremely annoying.

@Dengue2011
TOEFL iBT 114
GRE (ARGH!) V-570 Q-670 :frowning: AW-3.5 (very low, but not as important as my low Q score)
Undergrad GPA: 7.68 (0-10), MSc - I’d say it would be A (D-A)
I am a vet, have a 2 yr residency on large animal practice, a MSc (from the institution I am current a fellow researcher), 4.5 yrs of research exp (with virology, including the 2 yrs of my master’s degree).
I got one short communication “in press” (though it was only submitted when I applied), one original paper submitted (that was not submitted when I applied, it was “under construction” hehehe), one regional meeting, three national meetings (2 posters and one oral presentation). I guess that’s it.

@thetsb
I think it wouldn’t hurt to contact faculty, even now. I mean, the worst thing that could happen is they ignore your e-mail (that happened to me). But they can also be very nice, and actually have some interest on you (that happened to me too, and I think it is totally worth the try).

Oh, wow, I have been away from the computer the whole day… When I get home, still nothing, no news, no rejections, no interviews… nothing. I guess I’ll start checking the online status again, only to torture myself a little more.

Good luck to those of you w/ interviews on the coming weekend!

Hello, everyone! Your forum is so insightful; I’ve been reading all day on and off. I have a question/consideration for those of you who are gracious enough to answer:

My boyfriend is an int’l student applying to neuroscience programs at schools in NYC including Weill, Columbia, Einstein, Mt Sinai, NYU, etc. He’s visited the schools and spoken to professors; his stats are strong. He hasn’t heard from any of the schools yet, and I’m wondering…

COULD IT BE THAT INT’L STUDENTS DON’T GET INVITED FOR INTERVIEWS due to schools’ financial constraints?

COULD IT BE THAT INT’L STUDENTS’ APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED SEPARATELY?

I am a pragmatic person, and if I were on the admissions committees, these two considerations would seem quite reasonable!

Thanks for your responses; it’s been tough waiting!

@Rio: Don’t worry, my GREs were atrocious. I’m just terrible at standardized testing and admittedly I did not study. >_< I took them just to get into my Masters without really caring about the score, and now I regret it. haha Out of curiosity, what program at UT Austin did you apply to?

I’m going to Houston tomorrow for the interview at Baylor (Interdepartmental Program in CMB)!! Is anybody here going :)? I’m getting nervous because this is my first interview and i have to interview with 5 faculty…it’s going to be a LONG day :frowning:

I hope Thursday night is a guilt-free night for me to go out and meet my friend in Houston rather than hanging out with other students and participate in ‘social activities.’ :p
