@daybyday, xiv21:
I’m also interested in how gsk is viewed. I’m from the medical field, especially oncology, and sloan kettering is just like the high temple to people in our field. Therefore although I knew very little about GSK, I applied, as well as UT Houston/MD Anderson, obviously. Though it seems that I’m out of chances with GSK, I still am pretty interested in how you guys would view them: obviously having a strong clinical setting would provide more translational research opportunities (i.e. patient samples, ) will that provide an edge in cancer bio research?
On a side note, I have an interview chance at scripps biology, however it seems their strength lies in bio chemistry and structure, so I’d be interested to hear from people interested in cancer bio to comment on whether scripps would be a good place to learn science if my interest lies in oncology.
Thanks in advance.

@safetypin… well thats a relief. yes, it was probably too expensive for them to call me since i’m international.

anyone know how many people are interviewed vs how many are accepted at uchicago?

Neither. As far as I am aware, the callers are designated from professors working on admissions from each of the departments – if you indicated that your interest was in Cell Biology, then a professor from Cell Biology on the admissions committee will call you. So it’s possible that someone you’re interested in may call you, since he/she is from the department you indicated, but you are not being called by that person because you indicated interest.

It’s my understanding that each of the departments in BBS admits more or less independently, which is why there’s variance in the time that different admits are notified.

Yeah .

@bioquest

hey another eeb person!
i also got a interview for nyu biology, when you going there?
And you’ve got interview for UChicago? Wow…mind if you share ur stats?

Why is GSK so awesome? I’m not interested in cancer biology or anything relating to diseases but everyone on here is like, head-over-heals in love with the place, mind if I ask why? (not in a condescending manner, haha, really, just curious as to why the program is above all others? what stands out?)

Just curious–does a school like Stanford weed out folks who have a lower GPA or GRE score than expected? I’m wondering why it’s taking the folks this long to review applications. Do they review all of the applications together in a big circle or something similar?

Also, has anyone heard back from Stanford’s Microbiology and Immunology? I’m interested to know if anyone has received an acceptance, interview offer, or rejection. Thanks!

Cornell EEB sent out invitations at the end of December. I think I got mine a few days before Christmas. The recruitment weekend is in two weeks, Feb 5th through the 7th.

Haha, I just got denied from Wisconsin Madison’s CMB program… I didn’t even know I applied there… I was freaking out for a second.

@bluepeach – I am also waiting on Stanford but I guess it looks like they are done sending out invites; so bummed about that but oh well I already have one acceptance!

Where else are you interviewing? Good luck!

Safetypin,
I’ll give you my reasoning on why I’m so excited about the place. Part of it is bias towards NYC, but the biggest reason for me is how many faculty members are doing work that I find interesting. When I viewed the faculty pages, I had a hard time finding people whom I was not interested in. That is more personal though.

Details wise: they have a 1 year core curriculum followed by 4 years of dissertation research. This should give one more time to work on their thesis and less focus on classwork. During the first year, you do not have classwork while in rotations, once again more time to focus on lab work. They clearly have a close connection with MSKCC and thus have clinical observations and a clinical mentor that should assist in making your future thesis more translational. They have over 45 core labs as well. Lots of great things! I could go on for a while sorry, but alot of it is personal connection with faculty and the first year curriculum.

Perfect description, GCN2! I couldn’t have said it better myself!

I called Stanford Biosciences a few days ago, and the lady said Micro/Immuno will be sending out invites by regular mail through the second week of February. Also, the first wave of rejections will go out by the end of this month. Second wave of rejections goes out in late March. So they’re not done with the invites yet, but I still don’t understand what’s taking them so long.

Hi SmuUA140, thanks for the update! I can’t believe that the admissions process keeps being lengthened! Yeah, I’m really curious in why it’s taking them soooooooooooo loooooooooooooooong to review applications. I heard from others in this forums that most schools would weed out folks with low GPAs or low GRE scores in order to review fewer applications as a whole, and I am not sure if that is the case for Stanford…I also hope that you are enjoying your day in your lab :)

Yaygrady, congrats with the acceptance! I’m happy for you
Unfortunately, I have not receive any interview invitations yet. I’m also only applying to Stanford…so I really envy those folks who got an interview offer or an acceptance already! I guess it’s pretty much life or death for me!

Bluepeach: out of curiosity, why did you only apply to one school, especially since that one school is known as being one of the toughest to get into?

bioquest - does that mean you have some unofficial news from UCLA?
(I also applied to EEB)

Just an interview at BU Pathology/Immunology. So far 5 interviews… hoping for 1 or 2 more

Has anyone heard from UC Irvine INP recently? Just wondering if they are finished with invites.

I got an interview invitation from UT Southwestern this morning… The dates overlap with my interview at Baylor though… I’m torn.

I’m an international applicant by the way.

has anyone heard from Emory IMP (GDBBS) at all? or know if they’ve started sending out invites. they had a december 15th priority deadline and a january 1st regular deadline, not sure what that means in terms of reviewing apps and sending invites. thank you.
