"2010 Presidential Scholars" (news item)

Congratulations to the 2010 Presidential Scholars. After having been chosen in the spring, they were honored at an awards ceremony in Washington DC in June.

"The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students." (from the Yearbook)

The 2010 Yearbook has now been published and most have made their college decisions. As has usually been the case, Harvard is the destination for the largest number of Scholars. This year, Princeton and Stanford were the second most common destinations.

Any idea where the earlier Presidential Scholars are today? Does DOE track them?

^ I don’t know of any statistics, but here are some alumni profiles: [Presidential Scholars](http://www.presidentialscholars.org/famous_Alumni_1.htm).

I wonder why so many go to Harvard. Any ideas?

Man, I hate that stupid program.

Silverturtle’s link profiles two former Scholars from Princeton: Mitch Daniels (current Governor of Indiana and possible U.S. Presidential candidate) and Bruce Reed (former speechwriter for Al Gore). The former is a well-known Republican while the latter is a committed Democrat.

I don’t think it’s a great surprise that Harvard is the most popular destination. The Scholars are extremely able and impressive students with a much higher probability than average of being accepted to competitive schools including Harvard. I suspect that many of those who matriculated at Harvard were also accepted at other top schools. Harvard is the choice of a majority of those students (though certainly not all of them).
