2010 Tax Forms Not finished

Using IDOC (or generally speaking about need-based aid that require tax forms as verification), if my 2010 tax returns aren't completed by March 1st, can I send in my 2009 forms by March 1st and then send in my 2010 ASAP when they are ready? I have asked my dad to have them done by March 1st, but he says it is impossible to get them done by then.

To the OP…I would suggest your family finish their taxes on time. This may sound “harsh” but these deadlines have been posted since OCTOBER on most college websites. In addition, colleges had their previous years’ deadlines up before that. The March 1 deadline was well stated and has been up for a long time.

If you REALLY can’t get these done on time, call the school. But be prepared with a good reason for not being able to submit these forms on time. “My parents have a late March appointment with their accountant” OR “My family doesn’t DO their taxes until April” will not suffice.

Schools have deadlines for a reason. It takes TIME to put together a financial aid package. Some schools will not compute a package for you at all until they have all of your documentation and your FAFSA/Profile forms have been amended to reflect completed taxes and the numbers from those forms. Other schools will give you an estimated package but it is an ESTIMATE and can be adjusted when your numbers are complete. Does your family REALLY want you to make a college choice with an estimated financial aid award that could change once your taxes are complete?

I recall that several colleges listed on the CSS Profile wanted IDOC submission of the 2010 tax forms. I can’t seem to get in and edit the CSS Profile for existing colleges or use the CSS Profile to handle IDOC. Is this a separate process altogether?

IDOC is a separate process. You should have received an email telling you what to do if your school uses IDOC.

I would love to have my taxes done on time. Unfortunately I am waiting for a K-1 from a partnership. I usually don’t receive this until April 13th. I have begged and pleaded with the accountant. Hopefully I will get them in time.

@coffeemom if you can’t finish by the deadline, file a 1040 with what you have now, then file a 1040X once you have everything correct.

Otherwise your financial aid award will likely be affected.

My legal guardian’s accountant told her the same thing. Do one now and then amend later on.

The only problem is they want the farm/business supplement which requires the corporation/partnership tax form and all schedules. I can’t even fill out the supplement with out the partnership tax return. This is crazy. If I don’t think I am going to get it this week I will file and then amend. Thanks!

Wait, so do we send in the 2009 info or no? My parents say the 2010 stuff won’t be done until this weekend. :(

You can send 2009, but you must send in 2010 once it is completed.

I would recommend contacting each school’s financial aid office and find out what they want you to do. Each of our 10 have a different approach to one or more of the various issues with which we have been faced.
