2010 UC Berkeley Transfer Student: Ask me!

Of students who got in as econ majors, what’s the lowest GPA you know of?

@ ReachTheEnd
for some reason i haven’t collected many gpa to major statistics from the people here i’ve met but i’d like to think somewhere along the lines of 3.3 ish?

I guess what I mean is that whether you’ve ever felt that the school is really taking care of you vs. you’re just a job that counselors have to do

Another thing, I’ve always had questions about housing for transfers.

I know as a freshman, you’re guaranteed a dorm with some random stranger and such. And many people that start their second years go off and rent an apartment with new friends that they’ve met.

As a transfer, do they give you a dorm to live in? Or do they offer any type of housing where they offer you a room mate or something similar? Or do they just tell you to rent an apartment? Because as a transfer, you probably don’t know any students up there at first so it would be pretty hard to split rent for an apartment. I don’t want to be stuck paying rent for lets say a 2 bedroom apartment by myself because I have no friends at a new school :(

referring to the counselors, they’re great. they haven’t failed to answer any of my questions in a thorough and immediate manner. like most counselors, there always seems to be a shortage so you have to go during specific hours but if you manage to time your arrival accordingly, there shouldn’t be a wait so that’s not much of a problem. they definitely seem, to me at least, genuinely wiling and wanting to help

@ iMunster
transfers can apply to all the dorms: regular fresh/soph dorms (which means you’ll be surrounded by fresh and sophs), soph and transfer dorms (two rooms of doubles or triples that’re attached to one shared bathroom) or trasfer dorms (which i am currently residing which are 2-3 rooms with a living room and kitchen similar to an apartment style (2-3 individuals per room). you can rent an apartment if you manage to find one cause studios here are easily 1100+ which is ridiculous compared to housing in san jose or san diego or elsewhere. i suggest you figure which student housing i mentioned above and go that route. or, you can list your preferences and maybe i can help you out with rooming.

apologies for the late replies y’all

hey willabee,

i see your GPA was relatively low for an economics major. what is it that you think specifically set you apart from all the other applicants who applied for the same major? I know you said character, but that seems so general. did you exemplify that through your essay…exceptional major related jobs/internships…challenging courses? just curious. either way, congratulations on your acceptance, and almost getting your degree!

@willabee

alright thats helpful kind of  … the statements i think are the same…

-personal quality, talent, or experience and how your proud of it

-what is intended major? and how you prepared for it

do i have to graduate within 3 years of transferring? i wanna skip a semester

yo willabee,

how many hot girls are there in Berkeley?

and you probably answered this one already, but if a bio major were to have a gpa > 3.9, and have 12 units of honors, what are his chances of getting into UCB?

thanks dude! you rock!

firstly, apologize for not updating this thing. busy busy busy…

@ cherryvaseline
apologize for being so general about my initial responses and appreciate you asking more detailed questions to allow me to elaborate. but my response to how i believe i got in is in my opinion so please do not take it literally. my first paper was something i had to write about to explain my choice in major. it basically spoke about how i began as a kid making a lot of merchanting transactions at school with asian candies (me being asian), pokemon caRds, yo-yos, selling random stuff. i also incorporated my transactions (which i had a bunch of) on ebay, car forums, sneaker forums (iss from which many of you recognized me earlier from), etc. and how that played into my understanding on economics supply and demand. my second paper was about me passing up a supervisor position after 5 months with finishline (shoe store) as a sales associate to shadow a family friend businessman in china learning about its cultures, lifestyles, way of life, independence, etc. which i’m sure gave insight into “well roundedness” (whatever that means to you).
thank you for the kind words!

@ ndalbc
yeah, sounds like the same stuff

@ Iildimsum7
i actually just spoke with the counselor yesterday about that because i’m intending to double major and didn’t want to rush my course load and end up ruining other aspects of my academic and social setting that way. they told me that if you’re doing one major, you’re entitled to a 5th semester (as a transfer so basically the fall semester of your 5th year) if you have less than 130 total semester units and if you’re double majoring, then 136. again, if you still have under 130 for your second semester as a 5th year you can take spring semester as a 5th year, and of course 136 for a double major. just curious, what’re you skipping a semester for?

@ yheafreak
not many. there’re there and most are sorority related but nothing like how you’d expect elsewhere. come visit on any given school day and you’ll see.
and your second question, i’m going to reframe from trying to answer because i really just don’t know but in my honest opinion, you look like you’re in good standing! good luck with your admissions and everyone else looking to attend berkeley

@ Willabee, congrats for making it into Cal last year! I really hope I get in.
I don’t know if you have an answer to this question, but: Can you simply add on another major (even if it is capped) if you have all the requirements to declare that major? The major I’d like to add (if I get into Berkeley) is Media Studies. Is it possible to add this as a double major? I applied as a Linguistics major.

Hi

I am currently a High school student who is about to graduate, i have been taking classes since earlier this year(School year), by the end of this quarter i will have 30 qrtr credits(maybe more from AP testing soon). I understand that Berkeley is on a semester system does this mean i have to get 90 qtr units? Also what type of extra curricular am i looking at to get admission? is it possible? It would be really helpful to get help from anyone…

p.s. I go to De Anza, sometimes foothill

@ deanzatransfer: Yes, you can…but they don’t want incoming students knowing that :). And if you want credibility, I can attest to it being true because my friend switched into Media Studies (with the prereqs done), and I switched into psychology. Thus, you could add on another major or even switch if you’d like.

@ berkeleyappeal: Yeah, you’ll need 90 quarter units from your JC’s. As for EC’s, to be honest, they’re just not that important. Do some community service/volunteerism, perhaps get a job sometime within the next year, but on the whole the UC’s care about GPA, prereqs completed, and grade trends. Your personal statement is also pretty important.

Also, it’s VERY possible. You can get into any UC if you apply yourself. I don’t know about you, but I failed out of 2 high schools, got 3 F’s my first semester at my CCC, and I still transferred to Berkeley. Just do your best and don’t stop. You can do it :).

That’s because it’s insanely easy to get into any UC from cc.

Pick an easy major, do the minimum classes in basic science and math (subjects that require work) try to get above a B and hope that your easy humanities/social science/English classes will raise your GPA enough to be competitive at UC Berkeley or UCLA. If not, no problem. You can TAG one of the lower schools.
Oh, you failed pre-algebra, English, and chemistry 1A when you last attempted college…don’t worry about it. We have academic renewal!
You didn’t take the SAT? It’s okay! No need to show how well you understand basic subjects like english, math, science, and reasoning compared to everyone else in America. What a university needs is diversity, not people who know how to read.

I transferred to Cal by doing this and thought I was a real badass. Then I started taking real science classes and changed my major to MCB. I never realized what bs transfer admission really was until I saw how easy it really is.

You sir, are an idiot.

“You sir, are an idiot.”

That’s pretty much what I said.

@emilsinclair9

Can you post or link to your stats? I can’t recall seeing them, though I’m sure I have. :)

I’ll be a creep and remember some of them for you in case he doesn’t get on for a while.

3.74 psych major (applied as Phil)
Missing pre reqs that weren’t offered for phil.
Lots of community service
Great upward trend, I believe he started at CC and got a 0.0.

How’d I do Emil? I’m a psych major so I’ve creeped on everyone’s stats from last year 1000000 million times haha.

Stay at University of Oregon vs. Transfer to ?
I am at the University of Oregon (my home state) right now and feel anxious to move out into a more “happening” place in the world. The students here are very friendly and culturally expressive, but I desire a student body with more ambition, diversity and global engagement.

I would like to transfer to a more selective school (I got accepted to UC Davis; ultimately my goal is UC Berkeley). I had a strong application going into college (31 ACT; 3.8 High School GPA), but I took two gap years after high school to volunteer and returned to get a 3.47 freshman GPA. My volunteer experience overseas is fairly interesting and will make a strong essay.

What would be most effective on a transfer application to compensate for poor grades? I have until admission season next November to take action.

Thanks so much for the info!

@Willabee what are some on campus activities you’ve participated in? and how do you like them?

@ Ella: LMAO…that is eerily correct. I did have a 3.74, upward trend, and had my prereqs done for psych (not phil cuz they weren’t offered). haha but my first semester I received ~ 1.0…I think.

Oh, and Ella, let me know if you need any advice regarding the psych major. I can let you know which classes/profs are good and whatnot. I’m about to register for my classes for next semester! I’ll be in Drugs & Behavior, Psych of Sleep, and 2 philosophy courses. I have yet to choose which ones :D. Hit me up if you get in.
