2010 USAMO/JMO and BS

There’s something really clear—they’re all Chinese~(ABC)

^boardingschool
I urge you to talk to Toan in person. E-mail Zuming and he will tell you how many people on math team were recruited, one 9th grader even went to camp last year…

^gonnastop
Fyi, Toan isn’t Chinese.

lol, why do I need to ask someone in person if he keeps bragging about something he doesn’t have. His name has never been on IMO participant or winner list. You can look on IMO website or ask anyone who really participated in IMO.

If you talk to me in person, I’ll tell you that I won Nobel Prize and IMO 7 times. Oh I swear it’s true, they want to keep it secret and never published my name. Would you believe me? :)

boardingschool
Toan is definitely invited to go with team in 2009 and this yaer 2010 again. This argument is pointless. So what did you get on the USAMO this year?

As what? His name has never been on IMO participant or winner list. Never been on USAMO list before Taft.
My score went off the chart on USAMO, then I headed to IMO 7 times. I was definitely invited to go with team in 2009 and this yaer 2010 again. I was too bored to go. They said I was too awesome, both were too humbled to publicize my name. Talk to me in person. Call me. I’ll tell more tales.
Just. Kidding. Lol I’ve been messing around with you, not arguing.

Then I guess the IMO participants’ list is wrong. I hope you get 43 on the IMO this summer again, I also want you to know that we appreciate your humbleness.

How hard is USAMO? I already took Calc BC as a sophomore, can I make take USAMO?

Even for the most talented students, it is quite challenging.

You need to take AMC, then qualify for AIME, then qualify for USAMO.

Ok. Actually I just saw some AMC problems on MAA, they weren’t that hard, it’s more like quick math stuff. What’s a good score on the USAMO? (I think USAMO is out of a 42 point scale)

The median USAMO score this year was 14.

So is it only impressive if it’s higher than 14?

^ Most people would be impressed by anyone who qualifies for USAMO. A higher score (about 20+ I believe) is required for recognition in the USAMO.

wow. where do most of the usamo qualifiers end up for college?

Because qualifying for USAMO affords an admissions advantage and the students probably have strong achievements otherwise, most end up at top schools. Among the four 2010 USAMO winners who were seniors: 3 to MIT, 1 to Harvard.

I checked on the scores needed for recognition; and in 2008, 22 was required for Honorable Mention, and 28 was needed to be deemed a Winner.

thanx silverturtle. The USAMO winners seem to be a huge achievement. But where do the people who jus qualified USAMO ended up for college?

As I indicated, they disproportionately attend top colleges, but qualifying for USAMO does not in itself ensure admittance to the most selective schools.

Which grade r u silverturtle?

I am a high-school junior.

Wow, I’m impressed with your 6400+ posts… Do you go to boarding school by any chance?

I was thinking next year to apply as a repeat junior to Exeter, Andover, Choate, Groton and the Hill for math. I really want to qualify USAMO but I’m not sure if I can do that without repeating a grade at a prestigious boarding school. Any thoughts?
