2011-12 coa ?

anyone know what the (estimated) COA price is for 2011-2012?

I don’t think the Board of Trustees has made a final determination regarding what next year’s tuition will be. Last year, the BoT didn’t make its announcement until around March 15–so it’s still a bit early.

Last year’s tuition increase was 4.25%, with smaller increases in room & board rates. Comparing last year’s (2010-2011) direct school costs (tuition, fees, room & board) vs. the year before’s (2009-2010) yielded an total increase of around 3.9%.

I would guess that this year’s increase would likely be in the same ballpark-- 4-5%.

BTW, check the COA estimates carefully. UR only allows $500/year for travel costs. Unless you live nearby, your travel costs will likely be higher.

Also the COA estimate doesn’t include mandatory insurance coverage costs. (You must provide proof of adequate insurance coverage or buy a policy thru UR’s group plan.)

If you received the FA notification email like I did, it includes an estimated COA of $56,760. Although, like WayOutWestMom said, a final estimate has not been made.

OK that seems like the same number we got-but I can’t seem to go back and find it.

What is the insurance WOWM? Wow $500 for travel is not going to be nearly enough-I guess the best thing to do is put together our own COA as close as we can.

Do many kids live off-campus? The board figure I saw of about 7K seems high for a city like Rochester-Boston schools are about the same and Boston has much higher living costs.

All students must show proof of adequate health insurance coverage to enroll at UR.

The plan must be valid in the US, have at least $300,000 in annual coverage, must include prescription coverage, and not have a deductible that exceeds $5000 per year.

http://www.rochester.edu/uhs/studentinsurance/files/SpringWaiverForm2011.pdf

If the student’s insurance does not meet these criteria, the student MUST enroll in UR’s
group health plan. (Price for 2010-2011 is $1560.)

This insurance requirement is in addition to UR’s mandatory student health fee of $552/yr (which is included in COA).

Some students do live off campus, but I wouldn’t say alot. With few exceptions, freshmen and sophomores are required to live on-campus unless they live at home or with family.

Off campus housing costs vary depending on where the student lives. I’ve heard that $350-$600/month is pretty typical in a shared (house, multi-bedroom apt) living arrangement. Includes utilities, but not food costs. Off campus students must still take the commuter meal plan.

Most students stay on campus because it’s convenient and UR’s River campus location can make finding close by housing a challenge. On campus parking is expensive and frankly a PITA.

There are some on-campus housing options that have less expensive meal plans options–Southside and Riverview Apts. Both are apartment style dorms with full kitchens. Both still require meal plans, but less expensive than than larger meal plans for the traditional dorms. Southside’s room rent is also lower, but it’s a 15-20 walk to campus and for upperclassmen only. Riverside Apts costs more than the traditional dorms and is for upperclassmen only.

Some special interesting housing also offer lesser meal plan options, but usually require an additional fee for the in-house meals.

Many parent feel UR’s board is on the high side. OTOH meals feature organic and local sustainably grown and sourced foods, offer a variety of choices (including vegetarian and vegan) and is pretty tasty. Students can use their declining dollars at certain local restaurants in lieu of cash.
