2011-2012 Tuition Increased Announced

The announcement came in this afternoon's parent newsletter.

Tuition is going up 4%. Next year tuition, room & board will be $53,160

University of Rochester Sets Tuition Rates for 2011-12 : University of Rochester News

The professional schools, the nursing school and Eastman will see tuition increases in the 3.9-4.1% range.

Thank you for letting us know. 4% is somewhat high, yet I consider anything above $50,000 as high. Although, I have heard that Rochester gives a decent financial package to most of the accepted students. I’m crossing my fingers for acceptance and fin. aid!
Good luck everyone

I wonder how close the COA estimate of $56,760 used to determine our sons FA award is going to be to the actual COA. $3,600 plus $53,160 equals that $56,760 figure.

Is there anywhere they break down the number?

rowingbound011… I would agree that the cost of a college education is very high, and that 4% seems high at face value, but the national average is actually 6%. The board of trustees actually made a concious decision to lower the annual increase in the cost of tuition.

Numbers, especially percentages, can be very misleading.

For example, according to collegeboard.com, the national average cost for a 4 year public is $11,990 and a private is $27,300. At 6% the actual annual dollar increase works out to be $720 and $1638, respecivelty. U of R’s 4% of $53,160 works out to $2126/year increase!

So, while the percentage increase is smaller - 4 vs. 6 - the actual dollar increase is about 1.3 to 3 times the averages.

Just another way to crunch the numbers.

If you go through the comparable schools, you find very little difference in total costs. Not defending costs, just saying.

My belief, btw, is that one of the very best things the US could do for its future would be to make college much more affordable. That wouldn’t be as simple as increasing scholarships for poorer kids but would require a more general rethinking of how costs are borne in society. We seem, however, to be heading in the opposite direction politically. Since this isn’t a political forum - thank heaven - I won’t say more.

I checked College Board and the numbers are 4 year in-state public $19,388, OOS public $30,916, and private is $39,028 per year.

Plus the “conventional wisdom” is undergrad really isn’t enough anymore-an advanced degree is needed.

It’s really unbelievable and I don’t think ultimately it is sustainable but it is what we have to deal with so we all are figuring out the best way we can handle it.

UR is on the high side but as Lergnom said most comparable schools are in the neighborhood.

So is there anywhere this COA for 2011-2012 is broken down by category?

Here is link of this year. http://www.rochester.edu/adminfinance/bursar/PDFs/RCUGFees1011.pdf

I posted it below in case the link doesn’t work.
