Anyone have the current year's acceptance rates for the various schools? I have seen some figures but assume many sources are out of date. Have heard, for example, that Blair has dipped below 30% & that Brooks was insanely competitive this year. Where/how are the most current figures released?

There is a thread on this which you may be able search.

2011 (from my reading the cc posts earlier)
Deerfield 13.5%
Andover 14%
Exeter ~19%
Hotchkiss 19%
Lawrenceville~22%
SPS not sure 20% may be. You can say most of the HADES are below 20%.

2kidsnoanswers,

Andover: 14% admit rate, 78% yield.

Website research should reveal the acceptance/yield rates at other prep schools. Keep in mind, that admit rates for new upperclassmen (11th grade, 12th grade, PG) may be lower.

Good luck.

Loomis Chaffee was 28%

St. Andrew’s site says their accept rate is 28% and yield is 61%…though I’ve heard the actual accept number in recent years is in the teens.

[Boarding Schools with the Lowest Acceptance Rates - Boarding School Review](Most Selective Boarding Schools (2023))

From Thacher’s public website:

Approximately 500 applicants were winnowed down to 85 who were offered admission (a 17% acceptance rate). 80% of those said, “Yes!” (some with two exclamation marks!!)—and voila! New kids on the block are a bunch of hits and ready to help make 2011-12 The Best Year Yet, talent and smarts (average SSAT score 90% percentile) and passion sharpened by the anticipation of becoming a member of the Thacher fam. And they are a diverse group, as well—having packed their duffels in 15 different states and six other countries, bringing all-school totals to 28 states and 11 countries. Self-reporting as students of color are 36% of the newbies, and 28% are receiving some form of financial aid (30% in the school at large).

@invent: what school are you attending this fall?

I received an email from one of the staff at NMH, and he says that out of 300 applicants, 100 are admitted- or 1 out of 3 are admitted. So roughly 33% for freshmen. But the yield may be low, so it could be well above 33%.

DA, Planning to drop out of school and start a company. There are so many successful dropouts, it’s not even funny.

Embarrassing…smh

@Invent: planning to drop out from which school?

@rizzle,

I think the “yield” rate is calculated by dividing the number of matriculating students by the number of Accepted applicants–not by the number of total applicants.

So, as per your example, if NMH admitted 100 out of 300 applicants, and only 60 matriculated, then the admission rate is 33%, and the yield rate is 60%.

Thanks, everyone. I do try to keep my eye on acceptance rate, since the yield is not 100% for even the most competitive schools (with such low numbers as it is, that’s good news!). I keep hearing that BSR is out of date…is this still true?

I do wonder why some of the numbers are so very low - Suffield, for instance. Anyone know if they have a lot of local applicants or something?

Maybe. I still check BAR for other info. If the boarding pop is low then it’s probably competitive because of day students maybe…?

Hotchkiss was 16% acceptance this year.

Choate was at 20% this year.

What’s St. Andrews in DE?

Rizzle, read the thread for Pete’s sake.

No I meant the acceptance rate lol.
