2011 AP Physics C Post Test Discussion

The E&M portion of it was really, really easy and doable in my opinion, for the multiple choice and the FRQ's. Answered all the FRQ subparts on all questions except for one. I'm feeling pretty solid about this test.

The Mech was, however, and absolute nightmare! I ended straight up guessing on about 8 questions on the MC that I skipped and basically found the MC to be unnecessarily hard compared to released tests.

Then, the mech FRQ was much, much more terrible than the more recent released FRQ's for me. I had no clue how to do much of it, ended up writing down some bizarre answers. I was hoping that the FRQ's would be feasible to make up for my low MC score but evidently not.

So anyway, what did you guys think of it?

yeah. gonna be an easy curve for mech. I didn’t “guess” on MC, but there were 2 or 3 where i was choosing between 2 answers, and really wasn’t sure which one was right.

AP Physics isnt offered at my school (it’s just an honors physics course, so it has the content but no AP focus), and holy *. There were 31 of us that took Mechanics. Absolute nightmare. Everyone was swearing their heads off after the MC. The free response questions were on the level of “what the *” hard. Where I had the hardest time on that test was the fact that I realized how to do everything with like 5 minutes left in the MC and 5 minutes left in the FRQ, so I got a lot of stuff wrong / left 2 parts of a FRQ blank. Hoping for a massive curve.

The mechanics m/c was more challenging than expected (I did 1984, 2004, 1998, and 1993 released m/c as practice). I straight up guessed on 5 of the m/c since I ran out of time.
However, the ones that I did do I feel confident about.

The mechanics FR was a nightmare at first glance, and it definitely required a lot more conceptual thinking than past exams - not your typical “plug and go” type problems. However, with a bit of careful thinking it was kind of doable. I partially finished pt E of the 1st question and skipped pt F. I also skipped the graph (last pt) of question 2. I did answer everything else though.

The 2 scoring worksheets on AP Collegeboard website has cutoff for 5 around 56 to 58% – so if you get 58% m/c and 58% FR you should expect a 5 lol.

E&M was laughably easy, both in MC and FRQ. I didn’t get everything, but I feel like I got more than enough for a 5.

Mechanics was unbearably hard. I don’t know how many MC questions I guessed on, maybe 4. And the FRQ’s were ridiculously difficult, but I ended up figuring them all out, save for one or two parts (I hope). I felt so smart when I figured out the last one, haha. Mech will probably have a very lenient curve, so I’m anticipating a 5, considering how well I think I handled the FRQ’s. But I could be wrong.

E&M was extremely easy - probably 38 (weighted) on part 1 and 42 on part 2.

Mech - extremely hard. Multiple choice was harder than normal (missed 1 - hoping for 38+ )
FRQ…so many silly mistakes. 3 was not very hard, if you knew what to do. 1a-d were easy, but e and f were difficult. 2 was pretty difficult.

What do you guys expect the curve to be for physics? Usually its around 50, but with score choice and difficulty factored in…?

yeah number 3 you just had to notice that one thing and it all fell into place…

most of my friends didn’t :(

Hopefully the curve for Mech will be more lenient! I might be able to squeak out a 5 for mechanics with a nice curve since I answered most of questions 2 and 3, but couldn’t really figure out much for question 1 . But after all this is the first year where they don’t deduct for wrong answers so you never know how exactly that will affect the curve.

Mechanics:

do you guys think 48 / 90 would be reasonable for a 5?

The 2004 curve was 49/90 for a 5.
The 1998 curve was 55/90 for a 5.

I’d expect the curve to be a tad higher, now that there are no penalties for wrong answers. 52-53 is my guess.

^ prob around 50-54

Did I take the same test as you guys? o.0

I found Mech to be extremely straightforward, but E&M to be utter hell. I wasn’t counting on Magnetism being so prominent; there was much more of it than on any released exam I took. I was guessing from the equation sheet on free response since I had no idea what an inductor in a circuit did.

I would guess 55/90 for Mech and 45-50/90 for E&M as curves?

^I agree with conquerer7. I’M SO CONFUSED…mech wasn’t that bad. O_O
Also *** we never learned LC circuits T.T

IMO:
mechanics mc = doable and pretty straightforward, but a bit time right
mechanics fr = ***… hardest mechanics frq’s i’ve seen… I get #3 now that I reflect but I was tight on time and kinda bs’ed it. oops. all in all much harder than the past released ones (again, IMO)

e&m mc = kinda hard, eh, idk. maybe it’s just me cuz i don’t like circuit analysis stuff which there was a lot of i thought
e&m frqs = not bad at all; i thought they were actually really straightforward…

I’m more in line with the general consensus. Mechanics FRQs were insane. Period. I doubt I got many points on those, but the MC for mech I thought were really easy :s I wasn’t sure about only a few. Hopefully MC will help my score…

E+M MC was more difficult, but not terrible. FRQ’s were very reasonable. I only skipped a couple sections I think… I was extremely happy that a whole question was circuits. I love circuits.

^^pretty much exactly what sunshine said

I skipped the last part of the first E&M FR, and the two inductance parts of #2. We never went over LC circuits very much. I did all of the third one, but my answer for the last part was a little off of the actual value for the magnetic constant… hopefully I still did it right.

I didn’t do parts e and f of Mech #1 (couldn’t think fast enough), but did all of 2 and 3.

I just took E&M
It was so easy compared to the Mechanics test I took last year.

Probably got a 30/35 on the MC and a 37/45 on the FRQ

I was so happy with all the Capacitors and Inductors problems, I just studied that.

For the last problem I got close to the constant value (1.59x10^-6) The constant is 1.26x10^-6 so it’s close enough
Pretty easy problem.

There were only 2 parts I didn’t know, the last part of the 1st question and the last part of the 2nd question.

For mechanics pt 1e/f were hard. Number 2 was pretty straightforward except for the graphing part (imo). Number 3 was probably the easiest…though I’m not sure if I did the right thing…can’t wait to discuss number 3 lol

Going into the day I thought I would receive a 5 on Mechanics and hopefully a 4 on Electricity & Magnetism. Walking out I thought I was going to receive a 5 on Electricity & Magnetism and hopefully a 4 on Mechanics.

I’m *****ing done w/ physics!!!
