Congrats to who got in…hopefully I get in around feb. How were you guys recommendations and essays? I got the same stats as some of you and im trying to figure out why i wasnt admitted. My essay was incredible and my recommendations were pretty good. I also have a lot of extracurriculars under my belt.

Good recommendations and essay.

But I come from a Science and Technology High School in Maryland.
Varsity Baseball Captain
Vice President of Science and Tech advisory board.

My guess on admissions since I’m just a parent but do know individuals involved with admission at some private schools. Here’s three things they told me that makes a difference:

Location - OOS from a low representative area is an REAL advantage.

Essay - Was told NOT to do any real editting of my son’s essay. An essay that reads “above” the test/GPA is discounted. A “perfect” essay, B’s in English and a 630 writing score… they would rather see a thoughtful essay from the prospective student instead of the parent or HS English teacher. Granted, its a little crystal ball reading but I was told that it is frequently quite obvious, especially based on vocabulary.

Declared Major - They need to balance classes so… I was also told that undeclared (what my daughter did a few years ago) is the worst choice to make. Pick one and then switch or tell your advisor your not sure. For most majors, everyone takes the same first semester classes anyway. Problems come in year 2 1/2+ when there are to many students for available lab space… so they limit incoming class size accordingly.
