It is waaaaaay too early to predict the final outcomes of waiting list admissions. The fact that some schools have started simply indicates that it is part of their usual enrollment strategies. There are plenty of perennial under-admitters that have yet to make announcements. The domino effects caused by the most selective schools have yet to impact the lower ranked schools.

We are looking at MONTHS of movements; not days!

Again, there are schools that made the extensive use of the waiting lists, especially when combined with a dynamic ED recruitment, part of their enrollment strategy. WL admissions offer wonderful yield protection crutches as the process can be used to inch toward a 100% yield on offers. For some, such as Duke or Middlebury, it seems that announcing untenable low admission rates in April presents an irresistible attraction.

Fwiw, the WL movements are real and early, but also totally expected. My comments were about attempting to draw conclusions from the early announcements. Schools can come late to the party and announce a large number of WL admits.

The more selective schools in the list above may have only accepted one or two outliers as well. I think this may be the case for Dartmouth and Columbia as there does not appear to have been more than one report at each. I suspect the crystal ball will get a little less fuzzy in the next 3-9 days.

Unfortunately, I can’t find where I saw it, but I’m sure I’ve seen it stated that wait list admissions are not counted when reporting yield. (Can someone confirm?) They are included, at least for some schools, in determining the final admit rate.

morrismm: the admissions offices were not open on Sunday so in essence we are only 4 days out from decision day…and many of these starting “pulling last week”…have patience; it will def get bigger
