2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@numbernine

Awesome! You received it today? I am driving myself insane worrying about UCSD BMS. Other than those who received interviews in early december, has anyone heard from UCSD BMS program??

ya i am waiting for penn, columbia, ucb, ucsf, stanford, u.chicago, and princeton… all mcb/genetics.

i dont feel like pestering programs and i like riding this wave of uncertainty. plus i am about to start trying to optimize synthetic metabolic pathways :smiley: … looks like ill have to wait another year for grad school.

Tetrad!

BTW: I heard that Harvard MCB will be calling interviews 1/19 (though this COULD be delayed due to the blizzard…). I just wish I knew when CalTech Biology and Harvard BBS were sending interviews/rejections…

So far:

Interviews:
MIT (Biology)
Stanford (Biological Sciences)
UCSF (Tetrad)
UC Berkeley (MCB)
Yale (BBS)
UC San Diego
Baylor (declining)
Princeton (likely to decline)

Still waiting on: Harvard (BBS, MCB), Rockefeller, Columbia (Bio), CalTech (come on!!!), UPenn (Bio), UCSB

wow congrats on the interviews,

i’m still waiting on stanford and rockefeller too

Whats the deal with Stanford Neuro? Can I assume a rejection?

@Flutopian

Yeah today. Getting a little apprehensive about Stanford Biosciences and UCSF Tetrad. Are the Stanford Biosciences programs sending out invites separately? I’m applied to genetics.

numbernine, i think someone posted on this thread that stanford biosciences were indeed sending invites out separately…

So it seems like all the invites were sent today for the TETRAD program? My file still says under review

According to Grad school cafe, last year they made calls for 2-3 days with offers.
I would love to know the stats and state residency of those who were invited!

@ sherman - i got a phone invite but my status is still “under review” online.

@ kp12746 - i was an undergrad at brown and i loved it! glad to see you’re interviewing there :slight_smile:

re: Stanford Biosciences - as far as I can tell, no one has heard from Genetics or Cancer Bio… which lets me hold on to a little hope!

State residency: MA

Stats: GPA 3.685 (Science 3.55)
One 2nd author pub, 1st author hopefully on way within a couple months
2.5 years research experience

ahhh the suspense is killing me!

Waiting: Stanford Cancer Bio, UCSD Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Northwestern IGP, Vandy, Brown MCB, Georgetown, OHSU, UCSB, UC Denver, Davis BioE & a couple special NIH programs

Little hope b/c of interview dates: Harvard, MIT, Yale, UCSF, UCLA, USC

Interviews:
Penn CAMB
UC Davis BMCDB
UC Irvine CAMB
Baylor TBMM
Tufts ISP
BU SOM cell bio
Weill Cornell ALLIED

Rejects:
UofWashington

@phirah
@CompuBio
Don’t give up hope yet. I emailed them asking and they said they had a large number of apps this year and they’re reviewing/deciding still

Thanks for the Brown info. They just had their deadline on the 7th, so I’m just a bit surprised. I do know that people can get interviews before deadlines if they submit earlier.

If you’re wondering whether or not a program has already begun contacting people, I suggest checking the GradCafe results page if you don’t want to sift through the thread.

@fallbiomed2011: Harvard BBS had approximately 680 applicants this year I believe, and about 100 will be accepted. The number of foreign students (by nationality, no distinction made as to where undergrad is done because its a funding issue) accepted each year is about 20 or so. Matriculation rate is usually very high among foreign students.

@DeisGrad: BBS adcom has already finished their list, should be notifying next Tuesday by email if everything goes smoothly in the office (with very few exceptions).

Thought I’d post my final (?) tally.

Graduating from high-ranked UC. Cum. GPA: 3.47, Major: 3.55. GRE 790Q/660V/5.0AW.
Did two years research in lab of extremely well-known neuroscientist. Presented posters at two major conferences including Society for Neuroscience. One 2nd author publication in the pipeline for early this year. Three superb recs and one so-so. I also started a biology journal club at my school and wrote a couple reviews for my school’s undergraduate research journal.

Acceptances:
Rockefeller (1/7/11 by FedEx)

Interviews:
UCSF Neuroscience (12/18/10 by phone)
Harvard Neuroscience (12/20/10 email)
NYU Sackler Neuroscience (12/23/10 by email)
Columbia Neurobiology and Behavior (12/25/10 by email)
MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences (1/3/11 by email)
Johns Hopkins Neuroscience (1/3/11 by email)
Yale BBS Neuroscience (1/4/11 by phone)
Stanford Biosciences - Neuroscience (1/13/11 by phone)

Waiting/Rejections:
UC Berkeley Neuroscience (saw on gradcafe that all invites had gone out already)

@sherman: domestic student here, and my website status for Tetrad still says “Under Review.” No idea as to whether they’re contacting domestic students first and then international, or what.

Heh, I find it interesting that I’ll probably meet some of you guys/gals at the interviews, but will have no idea who is who from these boards.

To all those waiting on TETRAD…I would be shocked if they were done with interviews, and I assume there will be another round of phone calls tomorrow. Judging from other departments (BMS, Neuro) they seem to be very prompt and I think we will know when all interviews have gone out because there will be a large number of rejections posted on this thread/on grad cafe.

Regarding UCSF Tetrad, I think your application will say “Under Review” until you are either admitted post-interview or formally rejected (pre- or post-interview). Getting/not getting an interview offer will not change your application status.

I know not all of the Stanford Biosciences Home Programs seem to have invited anyone, but since there have been Stanford Biology invitations, do you all think its safe to assume rejection for this program if you haven’t heard anything?

Applying to neuroscience programs UPDATE

Interviews: Wash U, UMinnesota, Florida State U, USC
Waiting: Michigan State U, UMichigan
Probably Rejected (no (un)official rejections yet): UWash, UCSD
