2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Just out of curiosity, has anyone received anything from Stanford Biosciences regarding travel arrangements after receiving an interview invite? Thanks.

I’m starting to really get upset about Stanford Genetics and UCSF Tetrad…should I assume if I don’t hear this weekend I’m not going to? :/

Hi all, does anyone know if Stanford Biosciences - neuroscience is still sending out interview invitations? So far, I’ve only seen one person on this forum who have been invited. Big Thanks!

Wow, didn’t know such threads existed for graduate admissions; I haven’t used this account since I applied to college!

My stats:
Major in Biology, minor in Chemistry; my undergraduate institution is nothing prestigious
3.81 overall, 3.80 program GPA
GRE 690 Q, 500 V, 4.5 W (laughable, I know)
4 years research experience in the same lab at my school
1 2nd author publication, another submission on the way in a few months
Several presentations

Interviews (in order of acceptance):
UGA Microbiology
UAB Micro
UMich PIBS Micro and Immuno
UT-Austin Micro
UNC-Chapel Hill Micro and Immuno
Emory MMG

Haven’t heard from UWisc MDTP

I’ve heard different things about these “recruitment weekends”. Are you basically accepted since they are willing to spend the money to get you out to their area or should you take these weekends extremely serious (ie read the papers of the people you interview with, etc.)? I can already tell a difference in the demeanor of some schools versus others. Anyone have any specifics on the above schools? I know these schools aren’t as popular as Stanford and Harvard, but any information anyone has would be appreciated!

I am confused with harvard bbs admissions. They r not meant to interview applicants but I just read in gradcafe forum that one international student got interview by email
Is that true?

Interview offers are not usually made over the weekend.

No.

A combination of both. Most programs do accept the majority of students they invite for recruitment (although every program is different and YMMV), but not all students invited are accepted. The sensible strategy is to behave professionally at all recruitment weekends, to be polite to every representative of the program you meet (including students), and to approach the actual interviews as a chance to seriously discuss your previous work, your scientific interests, and what you’re interested in doing in graduate school. In my opinion, it’s not necessary to study the papers of PIs you’re meeting with – you often won’t get your interview schedule until you get to the weekend, anyway, and nobody is interested in drilling you. They just want to have a stimulating conversation.

kryptonSA36… so I assume many people are making up results… because for the BBS programs, from its website, it is clear that admitted students will be contacted by the end of january and beginning of february

Judging from the # of people who said they get accepted by Harvard BBS, obviously they are not making up results. I myself got accepted via phone call yesterday. The dates on the website is only a conservative estiamte

Can people admitted to HarvarD BBS say whether they are domestic/international students and which program they were successful

@kryptonSA36

I received a call for an interview invite on a Sunday afternoon and a friend of mine got an email invite at 2am. There’s no hard and fast rule for when you will or won’t hear from programs. I assume it’s more likely during normal working hours, but don’t be too surprised if you hear from someone at an odd time.

RE Phone calls: I got the call at 8 PM on a Friday. The actual Harvard students on the board have reiterated time and time again that calls go out over time, maybe not in a “wave”, but maybe a “gradient” if you will.

RE Status: Domestic applicant. If people want stats, I’ll post them, but if not I won’t.

@rabbitstew:

I was referring to the specific programs in question. At least for UCSF TETRAD, I know who sends the interview invites. Knowing that and knowing interview invitations are made initially only by phone, I know it is unlikely invitations will be extended on non-business days.

@kryptonsa36: does this mean that UCSF Tetrad is not done yet sending out interviews? Will they also send out emails? I am an international applicant, so I don’t expect phone notification. How many internationals are usually invited?

I think international students are unlikely to receive phone calls

Got a call late last week. I’m international. Interview weekends are Feb 3/4 and Feb 6/7

I JUST got a call from a HMS Professor accepting me to Harvard BBS!!! (BTW: Domestic)

This could be a definite sign they are still calling… but I should mention that my application was also eaten up by the internet and only got to the program in the middle of last week, so there is a possibility they are just getting to me late.

Just got an email invite from mount sinai for jan31-feb 1

Just got an interview invite from a POI for Tufts Immunology!!!

@peruano: There is no reason for anyone to make up an acceptance.
Also, molliebatmit who is on this forum a lot knows everything about everything with grad school–particularly concerning Harvard (I think she’s a current grad student there). you might want to direct a question to her.
