2011 Official LOA List

With the discussion about LOA's beginning and the first letters going out, I thought it would be helpful to keep a running list of applicants who have already received an LOA.

Classes weren't on the transcript yet when I sent it to them, but classes next year are German III and IV, AP English IV, AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP USH, Med Sci I, and Honors Bio.

Only hurdle for me now mainly is my medical. Already been DQed, just waiting for the papers from USMA telling me what to get done and sent to them, I'm calling my regional director tomorrow to make sure they're on the way to me.

Good luck to everyone else with obtaining LOAs, I hope if you really want it you'll get it.

I already sent in paperwork remedials for Dodmerb, so I hope I will be officially medically qualified soon. Now I need to work an getting a nomination and filling out the application once it's sent.

congrats to everyone who's recieved their LOA, and good luck to everyone still waiting!

does the academy choose the LOA candidate based on GPA and ACT?

I think you need to have your transcript and standardized test scores to be reviewed. You guys make me feel a lot better about my chances; I got a 34 ACT composite and a 690 Math 800 Verbal. The only thing iffy is that I got a 3.5 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted. And I didn't go to SLS. Still though, I'm going to Next Day my transcript when I get it updated.

hpdeskjetrocks: My understanding is that LOA's are offered based on the candidate's overall qualifications, not just strong academic performance. As the different LOA recipients share their profiles, I expect you will see a combination of strong grades, high SAT/ACT scores, varsity level sports participation and some school/EC leadership experience.

aspen: if the application didnt come out yet, how do you send info. about varsity level sports, and ec leadership positions? candidate kit?

i'm really excited about this!!! but i'm trying not to be TOO excited since I can't take the dodmerb test until december when i'm a legal adult...my parents won't sign for it...and I don't know if any issues will come up! eek

dancer,

Congratulations. I know other cadets who are former ballerinas.

You may want to consider having your parents attend an Admissions presentation with you. There are an awful lot of reluctant parents who become very proud parents once they have all of the information. Don't be hard on them. They are most likely just very afraid for you.

what's stated in the LOA? I just got a letter from the admissions office saying that i'd be getting the application soon, and that I'd be a good fit for West Point.

My son received the same letter yesterday. It was just a general mailing to qualified candidates to keep in touch. A letter of assurance (LOA) is different. I can't remember the exact wording on my older son's, but it was something like "a slot has been reserved for you in the class of 2008". Made it very clear that pending nomination, DODMERB, etc he was in.

Qwertz82:
You just made me feel better--- my dd got a letter yesterday and she is away this week..... I was afraid it was a "we won't be sending you an application letter"!
So maybe she has what you have!

Dancer: Sing this one to your parents--- they surely know it:
"Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'" -- Bob Dylan

Qwertz:

My son got the same letter. What you received and my son received is not an LOA. I would describe it as a Letter of Encouragement - kind of a 'hang in there, the application is coming.' message, which also contains some useful contact information.

momoftwins and queen bee-thanks for the encouragement! and i will be sure to "remind" my parents of the wisdom of mr bob dylan, haha!!
also, momoftwins, in response to your post--I finally got myself to tell my mom about the LOA tonight (my dad's out of town). she said that she was proud of my accomplishment, and not ashamed of it but kind of embarrassed by it since in her "circle" it's looked down on. I also kind of introduced the idea of her maybe speaking with my liaison officer or doing something else to learn more about usma, and she said she'd consider it (But that she was definitely going to "speak her mind" in that situation!!) thanks so much for the advice, hopefully she'll become more supportive if she makes the effort to learn more.
finally, congrats and/or good luck to everyone else going through this admissions process!!

Congratulations to everyone who has received an LOA already. If you've also applied to USNA and really want to GO NAVY!, be patient because USNA typically is not the first to give appointments. A special greeting to Kate Lewis's D who will make a fine cadet! Brilliant!!! :) :) :)

Dancer -

Slip her Absolutely American to read prior to her contact with the MALO. The more she learns, the better questions she'll ask.

And thanks, USNA09mom. We're pretty proud of her.
