2011 Official LOA List

What is required to receive a LOA? Based on the stats in this thread I think I probably should be receiving one (2300+ SAT, 3.9+ GPA, strong CPA score, solid leadership credentials, etc.), but I have yet to. Could there be something missing from my app that has prevented me from receiving one?

I apologize for the sense of entitlement that this comment must smack of, I know that USMA picks whoever it pleases, but I am concerned that something is missing. Thanks!

Athletics? Did you attend SLS? You certainly seem like a strong candidate.

It wouldn't hurt to reach out to your MALO so that he/she is aware of your level of interest.

just wondering how do i contact my MALO? he/she has not contacted me yet, and i just want to know how i should get the contact info...

Start by contacting the Admissions office at West Point. Then please keep in mind that the MALO's are volunteers and typically have full-time jobs. Don't worry if you don't hear back immediately. They are probably just gearing up for the new Admissions season.

Who are MALO's? Are they just your point of contact within the admissions office at west point?

Also... I've been reading everyone's stats, and some of them are amazing! I know that my standardized tests were a little weaker than some of the others posted. For those of you who are wondering why you haven't recieved an LOA with your great scores and leadership skills and everything else, have you sent in your school transcripts? Because once I sent mine in, within a week, my contact person at WP called to ask me to get my class rank, which wasn't on my transcript. Once my guidance counselor sent that in, I had my LOA in a week. So I'm thinking that your transcript with class rank on it, is a very important part of the puzzle to recieving an LOA.

MALO = Military Academy Liaison Officer
These are volunteers (usually WP grads but not always) who act as local advisors to candidates. They have online access to the candidates admissions file and are there to encourage and inform candidates, and also to do interviews and give feedback to the admissions office. If candidates are accepted they will present appointments at honors day ceremonies, organise preparation events before reporting etc.

Yes, class rank is very important and must be included on your transcript. It tells WP how you have performed relative to your peers who have been given the exact same opportunites as you have.

in my school, and im sure in many others, class rankdoesnt really mean anything. why? Plenty of people in my school take blow off classes in order to get a 4.0 gpa, thus resulting in 50 perfect gpas in a class of 500. I have taken one of the hardest course loads my school offers, consisting of mostly honors and AP classes, and have received a less than perfect GPA of 3.82UW. Therefore, my class rank would be well around the 130th, 150th mark, which out of 500 students, is not impressive at all...

I know that there has been a lot of discussion about the different methods of weighting classes and the value of class ranking on the main discussion boards. If you have taken one of the most challenging course loads and this has adversely affected your class rank, I would ask your guidance counselor to write a letter to that effect and include it with your transcript

I concur with Ann. Class rank is extremely important in evaluating candidates. Ask your counselor to provide you with a class rank based on a weighted GPA - they can do this.

dont worry about it, in my graduation class of 84 i was one of 9(nine) national merit finalists...my gpa was only like a 3.2 though, they take into account the difficulty of your school and course load

i know air force ajusted my gpa up to a 4.0 because of those two things, not sure about army

frijoles: It's a class rank question not a GPA question. Yes, WP does take into account the difficulty of your school and your course load when comparing your GPA to those of other WP candidates. Class rank however compares you to your peers who are at the same school, have the same grading criteria, and have the opportunity to take the same courses.
The point is that if a particular school discriminates against those who take a challenging course load (eg by using unweighted GPAs to determine class rank) then that should be brought to the attention of WP admissions, or a class rank based on a weighted GPA should be requested.

i got a letter today saying that my application will arrive shortly, and gave me my MALOs contact information. Anyone else get this letter? It also had a little blurb in it saying that thy think that Im a good match for West Point, that they seriously hope I consider it as a college. However, I'm sure that everyone who received this letter would have the exact same paragraph in theirs... Dang it, no LOA...

I got a letter as well. I'm excited to get the application and get busy:)

It happened. It actually freakin happened. I received my LOA Sept 2, my birthday, right as I was going to go to my birthday dinner. I couldn't have asked for a better present. To those of you still waiting, keep truckin, and you will get through this. Here's my stats:

GPA:3.39 UW

Class rank: 94 of 542

Service Connected Nomination
Medically Qualified

Took 5-credit course at community college over the summer to replace Calc grade, they probably considered that.

Now my admission is dependent on my filling out of the candidate kit, which coincidently came on the same day.

I'm surprised since I thought my relatively low GPA and class rank brought me out of the running for an LOA, but I suppose my test scores made up for that.
I also think that my medical qualification and nomination were considered; I suppose I was sort of a "sure" thing for admissions. Do they even consider EC's? I don't think they do as the pre cad isn't official.

My greatest thanks to everyone on CC for all your information and support. Good luck to those of you still fighting for it.
