2011 RSI Discussion

I’m from the Republic of Serbia

@SemperFidelis- i applied from new york

Did anybody else put Mathematics as their first (or second) choice at RSI? If so, what was your top subfield in math?

@PatherTrax I did. My subfield was number theory. Did you do math as well?

@browndbaternerd: Yes, but I put Group Representation Theory as my subfield.

I think my son put statistics and/or probability.

Does anyone know when RSI result will be sent out?

math subfield - computational theory

The RSI results should be out the last week or March, or the first week of April. Maybe a bit earlier if we’re lucky.

I put Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry.

Looks like there are more Math people than I thought.

^ Unless you have insider info, I don’t think it will be that late. Perhaps you are right though, we will see :-)

when is it usually?

i put applied math 'cause i don’t really like going too theoretical. but i put graph theory.

march is such a scary month.

@ inspiredone i think the letters were dated march 8th last year???

@sMITten: Well, if you’d look at the brochure here[/url”>http://www.cee.org/sites/default/files/RSI_Brochure_2011.pdf]here, I think you will see that it clearly says on page three that the notification date is the last week of March.

Now, unless you have insider info… I’m pretty sure that will be the week of the decisions. Of course, they could just be giving themselves some extra time just in case.

As eobaggs pointed out, the brochure does say it will come out the last week of March. And because the application due date was pushed back one week, the week of notification might have been pushed back to the first week of April as well.

But in the past years, the notifications were sent out earlier then the last week of March, so we can never be too sure. I remember that some people were surprised that the notifications came out early.

March is indeed a scary month.

But there is always March Madness. Final Four in Houston this year. Who you guys rooting for?

last year, rsi decisions were first received on march 6th…seeing as the deadline was pushed back a week, i’m thinking that they might start coming out on the 14th (the 13th is a sunday)…assuming similar patterns of processing and comparable numbers of applications

I like not knowing when decisions are coming out. Less stress.

@NotSoProdigious: Out of curiosity, did you mention if you want to do classical algebraic geometry (based on commutative rings) or modern algebraic geometry (based on sheafs, schemes, and stacks)? Regardless, algebraic geometry is pretty scary; it’s pretty impressive that you’ve learned all that.

@Gomez: Pitt Panthers ftw!..too bad we’ve lost two of our last three games. Other than Pitt, go Texas A&M!

Definitely classical. Algebraic Geometry is very, very scary. I’m still a beginner when it comes to Algebraic Geometry, but I put it because I want to explore M-theory through Algebraic Geometry.
