2011 RSI Discussion

I am sure someone from the list will get in! :-)

Just as a point of reference, the one person I know that got in was 12 years old. He’d been doing research since he was 9. Another friend of ours who will most likely get in is 15 and has been doing research for several years and won a large $$$ fellowship for the research. These are the kinds of people who get in, I think.

I’m not sure why I encouraged my son to apply! LOL

No, its most likely not by geographic location or alphabetically.
I know people from my area who were notified through email.
Their last names range from a-y as well.

Thing only thing going on in my head:
“???”

@blufzms: I’m from Arizona and so is paronomasia. I got one and she didn’t.

@parnomasia: Because it’s still within the US, I doubt the rates would be any different. But please don’t call them if you don’t want to. It’s just me wallowing in my misery, haha.

Here’s a different theory: What if they sent rejections through email and acceptances through mail?

It’s also possible that they’re sending rejections, then acceptances. I believe a similar thing happened with TASP, judging by the times at which people posted rejected/accepted status on the thread. I’m vacillating between getting my hopes up and feeling as completely pessimistic as ever.

Prodigious, that’s what I was thinking. It’d make more sense, cause they’d have to include other info with acceptances.

And, don’t be miserable! You’re just too amazing, they couldn’t accept you for research because you know all the answers already. :)

…Before I call, what would you guys like to know? Besides what the !@## is going on, that is. :P

@SBJDORLO - Dont they have to be juniors in high school as a rule?

Yes, I am sure you’re right, NotSoProdigious. That makes sense. There’s hope for those of you that don’t get an email! Very exciting! I would love to see stats of those who make it. Thanks!

In the case of the 12 year old, I think he was a junior. He was just planning on going full time early.

@texaspg: There was a 12 year old last year that attended RSI, if I remember correctly.

@paronomasia: You have much too high of an opinion of me… Thank you, nonetheless. Also, call them and ask why some people are getting emails and why some people aren’t.

Okay, here’s what I got:
Rejections and acceptances are both being sent through email. They are all being sent at the same time, in no particular order. We will know by this week or next week.

That should explain all of it then… Now we must wait for the first acceptance…

That…makes very little sense. So they’re sending out emails over a period of days? Couldn’t you just write a program that would insert the names and send them all out at once?

hmm paronomasia, dont know what to take from that. Maybe they are doing rejections first? But why would it take a week for everyone to know if they are sending emails? I guess waitlisters. ps im also from the grand state of az

I freaked out when i saw I got an email- turned out to be from carleton college summer program  I have resorted to playing starcraft to take my mind off of it lol. doesnt help that im on spring break right now

good luck everyone who hasnt heard and sorry to everyone who was rejected. I feel like I may be joining you soon.

Not only is that process inefficient, makes no sense! Why send rejections and acceptances over a period of days? I am thinking the person at CEE was misinformed. I think a better more plausible explanation is in order. Grrrrrrr…CEE!!!

Well, I’m pretty sure they take at least one kid from AZ every year, so one of you two might get it. Good luck to both of you.

He seemed a bit irked and hung up really quickly, and I agree, it doesn’t make any sense. Would anyone else mind calling? It’s free if you use the gmail caller! :D

Ender, I specifically asked him that, and he told me that they were all being sent out AT THE SAME TIME

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think anyone from AZ got in last year.

No, there was a kid from AZ last year.

well i got emailed my rejection letter today for any of those who dont believe me:

"On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Excellence in Education, thank you for applying to the 2011 Research Science Institute (RSI) for academically talented high school students in math and science. The competition for the available places was extremely intense with many more qualified applicants than we could accept. We regret that we are unable to offer you a position in RSI 2011.

Please accept our congratulations for your many fine academic achievements to date and our very best wishes for your future plans to pursue a career in science and technology."

What time was your email stamped, allen?

I swear, my F5 key will have fallen off by the end of the day. Has anyone else tried to call?
