Hey, 10% chance, that’s higher than the 5% to get into RSI itself (not that this logic makes any sense at all, but still haha)

Accepted! (I’ve been stalking the thread until I knew a result)
Just letting people know that there are people definitely more qualified than me. Congratulations to all that applied, and don’t be discouraged. If you’re still waiting, try not to stress yourself out too much (though I know I was!!!).

My son is accepted! I can’t believe it since he is the 2nd one in his school who is accepted. Maybe a 3rd one, keep our fingers crossed.

I, too, was an alternate :-/. I doubt I was one of the better ones. Massive congrats to everyone who got in, you guys are ridiculous.

texaspg, how useful would being an RSI alternate be for the average MIT applicant?

To be honest Directrix, I am only guessing. There is usually a section for honors where you should be able to claim it since it is no small achievement to have made the short list in competition with such highly qualified people. I am sure you can put that letter to good use for college applications in your portfolio even if not for MIT.

In the end the more important thing for you is what you make of your last available summer before college to enhance your application. If research is in your blood, try every avenue because even doing something locally will allow you to continue while in final year and be able to work through fall for submitting to Siemens or Intel. I suspect if you spent 4 weeks working in the local soup kitchen, homeless shelter, tutoring underprivileged kids, you would still have a great resume.

At least it wasn’t over 9000 alternates, lol.

I wonder why they call RSI-ers Rickoids? It sounds kind of like rick-rolled, if you say it fast ._.

@Paronomasia
I think it has something to do with the name of the guy that started the institute? At least thats what my friend (alumni) told me…

RSI was started by admiral Rickover, and was originally called the Rickover Science Institute: [Hyman G. Rickover - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Hyman G. Rickover - Wikipedia)

Do they send out an Email or in the regular Post-mail? - because I still haven’t received anything yet…

^ did you receive a confirmation that your application was received? What state are you in? Email rejections were sent out Tuesday and alternate and acceptance letters were sent out in regular mail on Monday.

did the other alternates receive a rejection email too? I got an email on Tuesday and then a few days later an alternate letter in the mail…

neverending, i did not receive a rejection email

I need to force myself far, far away from this thread before it gives me any hope.

A few questions for alternates - can anyone please answer?

1) When will alternates know if they get a spot? Sometime end of April, maybe? Will Maite ever notify alternates that they did NOT get a spot, or just keep them hanging until June?

2) How do they pick among the 30 alternates? Do they already have them ranked or do they re-evaluate all the applications again if an alternate is required?

Thanks!
(My friend is an alternate, and she wanted to know the answers to these questions - she refuses to get a CC account because she says “she doesn’t want to get demoralized”…

icecream1, did you get in? If you did get in may be you should be asking those questions on behalf of alternates from RSI!

Icecream 1:
I can answer your second question, I emailed Maite and she told me that they would reevaluate from the pool of alternates to select a replacement, and that no rankings have been given to the alternates.

Mostly I’m just sad that this thread was on page 6 and hasn’t surfaced for awhile, but I do have a couple of real questions :-).

Has anyone gotten their “info packet” yet?

And also, wondering if any alternates have been notified of acceptance yet.

To RSI attendees from 2010 - What colleges did you get into and where are planning to go?

any alternates notified yet?

How many applicants did RSI have this year?
