Supplemental DMA essay: Pretty good I guess!

1) Financial Aid Information: Viewable and I didn’t check anything else.

I have to say that I had no plans of going to UCLA and sort of applied as a joke. I was aiming for Berkeley. Thus, the DMA application was the least stressful part of the process, I just had fun with it. My whole portfolio was tongue-in-cheek and very much a genuine representation of myself, rather than the version of me I thought most likely to get accepted. If I had known how awesome and competitive their program was I probably would have taken the process more seriously – i.e., screwed it up!

The moral of the story is (for art majors at least), RELAX!

Major: Applied Math
Gpa: 3.34
IGETC: Yes
Pre-reqs: All done
Essay and ECs: Very good

Decision: Accepted

Funny I got rejected by Davis, my essay was based on engineering because that’s what I applied to everywhere else. I applied to UCLA just for fun since it was free for me and I randomly picked applied math. Now I’m considering the possibilities UCLA can provide.

To the people rejected, don’t feel bad and keep on trying. I originally planned to transfer in 2 years but I messed up REALLY bad in my 2nd year fall semester. Had a bunch of Ws and a D. My GPA dropped from 3.6 to 3.2 and I almost gave up. I stayed for another year, finished pre-reqs for various UCs and completed IGETC and things worked out pretty well.

for future transfer students:
URSA hack generally works. if your financial aid is processed, you are likely in, yet there were some exceptions. also, if you are an engineering student, the completion of the required prereqs is the MOST important factor in admission.

Decision: Admitted 4/25

I honestly didn’t expect to be admitted, as I applied only because UCLA is one of the few UCs with Geography and I was able to apply to four schools for free. I really wanted to move up north, and all my plans are practically finalized for UC Davis (where I was admitted as an International Relations major) just in case I didn’t get into Cal. Now, of course, the situation has changed a lot…but I am going to the Transfer Admit Reception at UCLA on May 6th just to see how I would feel about changing my plans this late in the game.

Major: Linguistics
GPA: 4.00 – this is an odd case because I’ve applied after my first year in a CC. I had a 4.0 with only three classes in my post-high school record. Of course I have 4.0 this semester too, but that’s not apparent on the application.
Major GPA: N/A (covered by APs)
IGETC: Yes
TAP: No
ECs/Work Experience: local youth orchestra, local university orchestra, wrote testing material over summer for a job.
Personal Statements: Decent, possibly strong.

@predicthisflick: What do you mean they’re “in for it”? Do you mean they got into UCLA because of the low GPA requirements for philosophy or because the UCLA philosophy program is rigorous?

Jim Gray: So jg2290, the world has anticipated long enough, what have you decided?

Me: (man this is tough), after much deliberation and hearing from both sides (Berkeley & LA)
THIS FALL, I HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE MY TALENTS TO…WESTWOOD and join the Bruins.

Jim Gray: you were accepted to both schools, why choose UCLA over CAL?

Major: Biochemistry
