I figured I'd start a *central/i thread for discussion leading up to UCLA's decisions, which are expected on April 21. I want to beat whoever might post an "official" thread, or anything with an otherwise-annoying title. No offense to eyethink, of course. :-)

Appropriate topics for discussion:

Comparison of stats among 2011 applicants
Chance requests for 2011 (that is, already applied) applicants
Rumor and speculation regarding the release of decisions
Officially-released decisions
Housing plans
Potential EC involvement at UCLA
General worrying and concern over one's chances

I am a psychology major applying for UCLA and if I do get accepted there I plan to do a campus tour. However, I have questions about research in psychology.

My interests in psychology is towards the clinical neuropsychological side of things so I am not sure If a med center on campus (UCLA has one) would be of benefit for me considering that neuropsychology is going to be my focus on psychology. I took two semesters of anatomy and physiology, one semester of microbiology, one semester of General Biology and two semesters of college chemistry in my CC because I was a nursing major before I switched to psychology.

My question is, would a hospital/med center on campus be of benefit for a psychology major who is interested in clinical neuropsychology? Thanks!

Haha nice, not another “OFFICIAL DECISIONS ZOMG: jk lol” thread.

Well I actually delayed myself a year for UCLA - at the last second my TAP certification went awry and I felt cheated out of UCLA last year. I could have gone to UCSD or UCSB but the sheer cost of housing killed that idea (and secretly, I wanted a second chance at UCLA, this time with TAP).

The really funny thing is that April 21 is my birthday; rejected on my birthday, woohoo! And this year will be my 21st birthday, so either I’ll be celebrating or drowning myself in drink!

Stats in case people are curious:

Major: History
Alt. Major: Anthropology
GPA 3.4 (major GPA 3.8)
Prerequisites: Completed for both primary and alternate major
TAP Certified (and it feels good)

-Political Science
-3.4 GPA cumulative (3.95 and 60 units at CCC, brought down by 30 units at a practically-defunct LAC on the east coast from 4 years ago)
-4.0 among all CCC political science classes, 4 prerequisites completed, plus a Psych Statistics course (A+)
-IGETC (all complete as of Fall 2010; 4.0)
-TAP-certified

Work experience: Currently on staff for an elected official. Among other things, I am conducting analysis for local redistricting.

April 21st cannot come soon enough! I’m very anxious for the UCLA decision.

Major: English
GPA: 3.6 (Major GPA: 4.0)
Prerequisites: Completed by the end of current semester
ECs: 8 years of military service (USAF), won a few writing contests

Philosophy Major
Alt Major Anthro
3.72 GPA (major GPA 4.0)
TAP certified
Completed all prerequisites for both major and alt major
EC: english tutor for Office of Special Services and a mother of two.

like a previous poster said, my GPA is brought down by a year of college in 2004. boo.

It seems like ever since I heard back positively from Irvine and San Diego, my anxiety level concerning UCLA has only been increasing…I thought the opposite would happen! I’ve applied as an English transfer, 3.65 GPA with IGETC and major preps all done. I live walking distance from UCLA, I wonder if they’ll take that into consideration I hope these next couple of weeks pass by quickly, I’m trying to preoccupy myself with my studies and work in the meantime. Good luck everyone!

@Justin California, yay for English transfers! 8 years of military service is incredible, you seem to have done so much in life already. Are you planning on going to grad school for English?

Major: Electrical Engineering (EECS at Cal)

Overall UC Transferable GPA: 3.85

UCLA Major GPA: 3.79

PRE-REQS: Will have completed everything by Spring plus a couple of “strongly recommended” courses (that were near impossible to find and schedule  )

IGETC: NO (not recommended for Engineers)

TAP/TAG: NO (not applicable for Engineers)

ECs: NONE (except, that I’m an older student working 40+ hrs/week with many family responsibilites, and a Math Tutor+Math T.A. last semester, Physics Grader this semester)

PS: I don’t believe in rating my own PS (especially saying things like it’s a 7.73/10  ), but from other’s opinions, they said they were “good” on a good/mediocre/bad scale - this is the most subjective part of the app, and what might strike one person as being “good” might appear just mediocre to a particular admissions officer!

UNIQUE FACTORS AFFECTING APP: Got a “C” in a major Pre-req (and a v. important one at that) - Physics 1C (Electricity & Magnetism) - rest all A’s and one B

east2eden, It’s always great seeing other English majors on College College Confidential. I suppose I have accomplished a lot already with my military service–it seems like another life ago. It looks like we are in the same neighborhood too. I go to LA Valley. I wish you luck in getting accepted to UCLA! :)

Awwwwww yeahhh. I hope I get into History, but if I get into Anthropology I won’t complain. I’ve heard it’s easier to switch into History than other impacted majors. Or I can double major.

What do you plan on doing with your degree? I always ask other History majors haha.

nice, its great you have the TAP thing going on. If you don’t get into UCLA, I think some well placed vandalism is in order.
and I’m torn between the two most common answers haha - teaching vs. law. One of my history teachers is a retired judge and he recommended doing what he did. SO, we’ll see
and yourself?

Anyone want to chance me?
Math Major
No TAP
3.85 GPA Cumulative
4.0 Major GPA
All pre-req’s minus 1 semester of C++ done
Was supposed to be IGETC certified, but could not get a language class (super worried about this)
One year transfer, ~22ish credits through AP, max and +max units fall and spring.
Phi Theta Kappa, College Wide Council rep, High seat in student govt. for a very large campus

@LogicWarrior: I’d say 80% chance… very good stats and math isn’t too competitive of a major. I hope you get in because I’d say you have better stats then me so if you don’t get in I have no hope. I don’t know how big an emphasis UCLA puts on IGETC for BS majors but since you’re only missing one class I think you should still be able to do partial IGETC. Good luck though I hope we both get in!

As for myself:

Math/Econ Major
No TAP
3.87 GPA
4.0 Major GPA
7/9 Pre-Reqs (missing Diff Eq and Discrete Math)
IGETC
Weak EC’s
Decent Essay (Hey I’m a math major who said I was supposed to be good at writing!)

I’m worried about the missing pre-reqs but looking at past threads I’ve seen people get into math/econ missing 2-3 pre-reqs before… and even though my GPA is above the average admitted last year you just can never know with how much tougher it gets every year .
