So after all that they denied me because apparently one of my AP credit classes wasn’t transferable therefore I did not have the 30 hours. I called the office and they told me to appeal if I wanted to. The reason they told me that becauce I have 2-3 emails that I sent to UT Admissions counselors telling them what I would be gaining credit for and if it would be transferrable. All times they said yes and I would have no problem. I also sent those emails back in April so if they would have given me the correct information I could’ve planned accordingly.

What do you think my chances are of a successful appeal seeing as this is in no shape or form my fault but in fact it was the admissions counselors fault for giving me incorrect information multiple times that lead to this problem.

I didnt find the test to be too strenuous. The material covered is taken from Algebra 2 and Trig. My results placed me into M408C, but I’m choosing M408K to play it safe. I’ve heard Calculus is tough at UT.

I called the School of Undegraduate Studies about the same issue. They verified my TSI exempt status through my transcripts, and the bar was removed immediately. The process took about 5 minutes.

SeoulSista…Calculus at UT is as tough as you make it.

408C covers 408K and half of 408L in one semester.

Both are equally as tough, but in different senses. 408C moves very quickly through different topics, while 408K goes indepth on less topics.

Then of course, there is 408N (calculus for science majors) which is more about applied calculus, and in my opinion when comparing coursework with my peers, was more difficult. 408N however, you get partial credit for setting up the problem and whatnot, whereas 408K/L are all multiple choice, meaning the question is either right or wrong.

@propayne7
Thank you for sharing this valuable insight regarding Calculus at UT. I’ve heard the professors from M408C/N are better than M408K/L. Do you agree with that?

Multiple choice on a math exam? That’s not sitting well with me. Also, do you believe M408C/N is more suitable for students with Calculus experience? I haven’t taken Calculus.

I personally would say that 408C would benefit a student that has a very solid foundation in Trig and Pre-Cal. UT isn’t difficult so much as applying calculus (408K standpoint), but more or less algebraically manipulating problems and then applying the calculus topic.

You can’t take 408N unless you are in Natural Sciences, and I wouldn’t say it is more difficult than 408K on a Calculus level, just it is geared towards science, so it is applying concepts instead of proving answers.

As far as the multiple choice/partial credit, it is all preference. I always had a hard time knowing when to use logarithmic functions and whatnot, so seeing the answer choices would help me figure that out.

Oh, and while I don’t advocate slacking, if you aren’t a science major, or are really looking at grad school and don’t want to sacrifice your UT GPA, consider taking calculus at A.C.C. or at a home community college over winter/summer break. I would only do this if you are say, an Economics major that just needs basic calculus, and the other “soft” sciences that don’t really require the gritty calculus. If you are a science major or engineering, take all math courses at UT, because UT does it like no one else.

My declared major is Economics, but my long-term goal is to gain acceptance to the MPA program at McCombs. The Actuarial Science program is another consideration of mine. I guess I can ask an academic advisor about my concerns during orientation.

I also stumbled upon the grade distributions for M408C and M408K online. There are 20-30% more A’s given in M408C. Perhaps that supports the theory that the professor from M408C are better, or it could be the aptitude of the students.

transfer from: Sam Houston State University
GPA: 3.07
Current GPA: 3.24
Major:Biology/Undeclared
Essays: I wrote all 3 topics, edited by a English grad friend of mine and considered strong
Resume: considerable, but not a lot of work experience however very active extracurricular in High School, had 2 grammatical errors
Recommendations: none
transfer hours: 33, mostly science courses with my only C’s in English
I hope to transfer in Spring of 2013. I turned in my ACC transcript today but it only had six transfer hours, but they were both A’s
I would just like to know, roughly/truthfully, my chances of being accepted

ACC sent my transcript to UT yesterday with my fall grades. Does UT review applications and make decisions over the winter break? Or will I have to wait until after Jan. 2nd to find out?

I finished with a 3.44 GPA, 41 hours and I’m applying to COLA Economics, UGS.

I am an aspiring transfer student applying for Radio/Television/Film and UGS as my second choice. I am a freshman at a community college and I just finished my first semster. I did 15 hours this semester but I also took 6 hours of dual credit English my senior year. I ended up getting all As except for one class in which I got a B. My dual credit classes count towards my GPA at my community college however so my GPA will be a 3.43. I have read that the GPA UT Austin uses for transfers is only for classes that were taken at an actual college classroom (i.e they give you credit for dual credit courses but the GPA they look at only counts for classes you took in college). If this is the case my GPA will be a 3.8.
I took the following courses this semester: GOVT 2305, HIST 1301, MATH 1314, HUMA 1301, and PSYC 2301. I am taking GOVT 2306, HIST 1302, MATH 1342, COMM 1307, and GEOL 1403 next semester. In the end I will have 36 transfer credits but only 21 when I actually apply.
I work part-time at Best Buy as a gaming associate. It is my first and only job and, since I don’t really have any volunteer work or anything, is really the only official thing I can put on my resume. I got an award for a graphic design competition back in junior year of high school but aside from that I don’t have any actual achievements for my resume. I have a lot of experience with video editing and compositing (I plan on focusing on visual effects) and use Adobe After Effects and 3DS Max quite often but as for actual achievements the main thing I can put on my resume is my job and my visual effects skills. I plan on talking a lot about my love for visual effects in my essays and my technical knowledge in my essays so I am hoping that sets me apart. I have been told I am a good essay writer (I have never made below a 95 on any college writing assignment without much effort but that may just be because it’s community college) so I am not too worried about my essays so much.

So what are my chances? Also I need some ideas for my essays (specifically essay E). I can’t think of an issue that is of great importance to me that hasn’t already been done by every other applicant.

My stats are
GPA: 3.9 from ACC
EC: Honors classes in ACC, Phi Theta Kappa, work part time, walk dogs part time, rehab dogs, writer and have a short story currently published in ACC’s literary journal, former president of GSA in high school.
Hours: 39
College transferring into: COLA, second choice is COM

I had my transcripts on a “wait until final grades are posted”, since I didn’t have the minimum 30 to be admitted. My transcript just got sent to them today, and I was ticked off about that. I called and they told me that they won’t really get a chance to look at people’s transcripts until the 2nd–but! They come back on the 2nd, so that’s good.

I’m a nervous wreck. I know that my GPA has me pretty much accepted, as well as my EC’s, but I just would like someone else to tell me I’m solid. :/

I’m an Economics major at UT as well. The calculus classes are generally taught by the same proffesors. For example, one semester Radin might teach 408k and the next she might teach 408 C or D. The grade distributions are somewhat of a good judgement to make but if you take 408C expect two homework asssignments a week and a very fast paced course. Not trying to discourage anyone, I just don’t want people to think that one calculus course is better than the other. If you are an Econ student, you can choose between econometrics or multivariable calculus depending on which year degree plan you choose.

M 408K wasn’t bad at all. I didn’t go to any of the discussion sessions all year and I skipped class all the time. I’m not trying to brag, I’m just saying all you really have to do is study the homework assignments. Know how to do each problem and you’ll do fine in the class. And this year, all you needed was a 76 to make a B-. Really though, if any of you guys end up taking M 408K, just print out all of the homework assignments after the solutions come out. Then a week before the test, just start doing them every single day. Make sure you know how to do each and every homework problem. Sometimes there’s a couple you won’t ever know how to do, but that’s alright. Whatever. If you basically follow that method, you should get a B or higher. I’m afraid for M 408L now, but M 408K was definitely not as bad as people made it out to be. E 316K on the other hand… that was hard as ****.

I got an A- by the way. Which with the curve made it a 86.5 this year.

Hydras, I got into UT with a 3.9. PjLloud, I’m a little upset because I was in 408k this year after dropping down from 408c and I literally got an 86 as my final grade. Missed an A- by. 5.

I agree with you on your study method as well, that’s what I did to prepare for exams as well.

Has anyone else found out yet?
Also, I need some assurance:
I have a 4.0 GPA from UT Dallas and I’m an Eagle Scout, among other things.
UTD opens again tomorrow and first thing, I’m picking up my transcript and hand delivering it to UPthe Dallas UT admissions office (I already checked and I can deliver my transcript this way.)

The only problem is that orientation starts on the 7th. That gives me 5 days between when I send in transcript (which isn’t due until the 4th) till when I’m supposed to be at UT…what if they don’t post my admissions decision by then? Are they just gong to be working extra fast to get decisions out? It’s so crazy how fast the turn around time is for this.

Any advice/insight/assurance would be appreciated!!

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I’m sure with the 4.0, you will be accepted as long as you get the transcript in before the 4th. I just checked My Status a couple of minutes ago, and my application is finally complete. I’m sure they will give all the admissions decisions before the 7th. Good luck!

Now, I do have one question. Is “Complete” different than “In Review”? Does the status of your application change from “Complete” to “In Review”? I’m just curious to know if they’ve started to look at it yet.
