Decision: Accepted!!!

Decision Date: 12/10/12 I haven’t gotten my official letter yet; it’s really late coming because they accidentally put my application on hold. But I talked to an admission counselor today and she looked me up and I was ACCEPTED!!!

[] SAT II: N/A
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.35 (3.43 W) Had terrible grades the first three semesters of high school. This was explained in my application.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A (school only ranks top 10%)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Psychology (5), AP English Lit (3, self-studied), AP English Lang (3, self studied). Also took courses AP Stats, AP Micro, and AP Macro, but didn’t submit AP scores for these.

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): A leg lamp…just kidding. The biggest award I’ve ever received was Honor Roll from 10th-12th.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Gaming Club (president), Student Gov. (head of annual dinner committee), Drawing, Creative Writing (had poem published in local newspaper), play the flute and was part of Colorado Springs Youth Symphony as a freshman, Anime Club

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at the local library every summer until senior year.

[] Essays: Writing is my strong point, so I’d say the essays were the best part of my application.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Sent in 3. One recommendation letter was pretty form like, but the other two were incredible.
[] Counselor Rec: Very good
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Did off-campus with local admissions counselor. Went very well; my interviewer loved me and said he thought I would be a great fit for Willamette!
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Colorado
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A

[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $10,000-$20,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen. I’m also taking a gap year right now.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, recommendations, interview, strong upward trend
[] Weaknesses: GPA, didn’t join clubs until I was a senior (except Gaming Club; joined that as a junior), terrible at math and science (my transcript and test scores reflect this), failed AP Micro.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My interviewer said Willamette puts a big emphasize on “fit” as well as GPA and test scores, so maybe that’s why I got accepted? I think the interview helped a lot as well. Willamette is one of my top choices, and I think I really showed that through my interview and constant following up on my application.
[/ul]General Comments: Willamette was a bit of a reach for me, but for some reason they sent me the Leader’s Application and everything. I thought I would be either deferred or rejected, so I’m totally psyched that I got in! Willamette is one of my top choices, so I’m really, REALLY excited! Good luck to everyone who hasn’t received an admission decision yet. And for future applicants who don’t have the best stats, definitely do an interview and try to show Willamette that you’re passionate about attending!
