2012-2013 Decision Thread!

^ I’ve emailed the President’s Office and the Office of Admissions to ask if there’s an error in the Common Data Set reported for 2012. The data doesn’t fit with a public statement issued last year by President Stephen Thorsett. On January 13, 2012, he stated that “Applications for admission to the College of Liberal Arts are greater than ever, showing that demand for a Willamette education remains strong.” [Office of the President: President’s Report | Willamette University](http://www.willamette.edu/about/leadership/president/thorsett/messages/2012/01/presidents_report.html).

I’ll let you know if I hear a response.

^Apparently Willamette changed its marketing and mailing strategy in admissions. According to the individual who emailed me back, “Some schools market as broadly as possible, encouraging students who they know they won’t admit, simply to push up this artificial measure of “selectivity.” Our hope is to reach out to students who are going to be good matches to Willamette.”

To answer KD9’s question above: the ideal yield for Willamette is around 500. For the class entering Fall of 2010, the yield fell short by “about 100”. To compensate, the Fall of 2011 class grew to over 600. Looks like Fall of 2012 was “just right”.

Cal - thanks for posting back (and Kellie, too). I’m not sure that the answer they gave to you is right. Either the President mispoke or there was some problem with the 2012common data set…It really skews the “selectivity” measurement and it makes it look like they accept a very high number of applicants. It will be interesting to see the statistics of the accepted class of 2017. (BTW - my son was accepted with a 3.62 UW, 32 ACT and offered a $21k merit scholarship. Excellent ECs.) We visited and liked the school. But, my son may end up going to a polytechnic. Hard to tell until all the results come in. Nice to have this in the pocket, though.

Woah it has acceptance around 80%! On everything I have seen from Willamette it states their acceptance rate is around 55%. This is confusing…

Accepted w/ $21,000 scholarship! 3.93 UW, 8 APs, 1620 SAT (pretty bad), LOTS of extracurricular, volunteering, job experience, Ethiopian. Safety School!

In answer to the confusion regarding Willamette’s 2012 admission rate, I think that there may have been an error on the originally posted CDS. I remember seeing it and thinking that it seemed far out of line with previous reports. Checking again now, the numbers have changed (I also noted that the web page was updated on May 3, 2013 11:51:02 AM). For fall of 2012 the currently viewable CDS shows 8887 total applications for the freshman class, with 5370 admitted. That’s just over 60%, and not radically out of line with previous years. The slight uptick in admit % could be a result of the policy change that CalAlum mentioned.
