2012-2013 Med school applicants and their parents

I don't think it's too early to have a thread for those who will be taking the MCAT this spring and applying next summer.

What med schools have added or will be adding new req'ts? This would be good to know ASAP, so that a student could squeeze those new coures into his/her last 3 semesters of undergrad.

Please add tips, advice, insights, warnings....can't have too much info!

If you want, include some basic info about the student. :)

My son is a current junior at state flagship. He has a 4.0. Major is Chemical Engineering and minors are Chem, Bio, and Math. He is near-fluent in Spanish, including medical Spanish and business Spanish.

He'll take the MCAT next spring...I think after his spring break. We have no idea of how he'll do. He's not a super-duper test taker....he spends too much time on each question really thinking about each one, which can be a detriment. He got a 33 on the ACT and a bit higher SAT.

He will take the Kaplan prep class and has Examkrackers.

BTW...how far in advance do you sign up for a particular MCAT test date?

I guess I will also join this thread. I have been using SDN for the past couple of years, but I decided to join this site as well because I need all the help I can get.

Since you mentioned your son’s basic stats here goes

cGPA: 3.75
sGPA: 3.61

Undergrad at Georgetown. I don’t want to go into details about my extracurricular activities but this year I am doing research at the NIH. =) Hopefully this looks good on my application to medical schools.

I will be taking the MCAT in January. Probably start studying in early October with the Princeton Review.

Are you a junior or senior?

Junior. (10char)

Best Wishes to y’all.

haha Good god, m2ck, is that your true post count, or was there some computer glitch that moved a decimal point over or used a 5-digit random number generator for your post count?

D2, rising senior, at Top 35 research U; will be taking her MCAT in the spring. (Subject to change–which seems to be every other day. Sigh) GRE scores: V 620; M 790. She’s a likely MSTP candidate. Already has a full time research asst position for her glide year.

GPA 3.78 sGPA 3.76 Majors in neuroscience and mathematics. 3+ years research in cognitive neuroscience; 2 REUs, including Amgen Scholar this past summer. 1 semester research in single neuronal cell signaling-her new thing this fall. Two journal papers in progress. (First author on one!) One poster. 200+ hours of direct patient contact.

“What med schools have added or will be adding new req’ts? This would be good to know ASAP, so that a student could squeeze those new coures into his/her last 3 semesters of undergrad.”

-the best is to keep in close contact with pre-med advisor. They know before anybody else. Med. School can add requirements after your kid has applied. It has happened to my D. She was informed by her pre-med advisor right away. She had to make huge adjustments to her senior year after she has registered for fall semester of senior year. Dropped one of her minors, dropped some class(es) and had to walk in into others, usually profs are understanding towards senior pre-meds. Be prepare to be very flexible. Best wishes applying.

Bumping for application questions.

Good luck!!

And remember to apply early…see other thread for dates.

Kat

Is EDP always a bad idea? With average stats, 31 mcat, 3.6 gpa, double major science/social science, average EC, will applying early to state medical school help?

IIR, applying EDP means you CANNOT apply elsewhere, is that still the case? If so, it seems dangerous to put all your eggs in one basket, but if that is the #1 choice and you have something edifying to do for one more year should it not pay off, then it would certainly be cheaper and less stressful than writing 20-30 secondaries.

Thanks. We thought it was a bad idea also since acceptances are somewhat unpredictable (who knows if they’ll like your personal statement, EC, etc…). It only came back up since it was suggested by a premed advisor! We’re now leery of all of the advices from the advisors. They also told D to wait a year to beef up her EC since she changed from going to graduate school (science research EC), to premed. They gave her chances of an acceptance to medical school “remote”. Really bummed her out and as most of you know, parental advices will not outweigh the PROs.

I found this older thread about EDPs:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/1298141-early-decision-program.html?highlight=edp

I remember reading about the ED process on a med school website and thinking that waiting until Oct for a decision and not being able to apply anywhere else in the meantime sounded like application suicide! It was hard to even imagine a situation where it would be a good option, although there must be some for schools to do it.

You might consider finding EDP for your state on SDN, look back in the history of the past few years to see how it worked out.

applying early decision is bad, especially with low stats. too risky of a move with little benefit

Can anyone think of a situation when ED is a good idea?

I have read of situations where a married applicant applies ED because he or she is unable to relocate due to family matters, so it is either the local medschool or nothing.

GAmom is right…married/engaged applicants sometimes do this.

Hey, GAmom…which SOM did DD pick???
