2012 Engineering and Physical Sciences Admission Results

The call was like an hour ago. It seems like they’re doing rolling interviews, so they’re probably not finished. The UW bit was directed at someone who brought it up two pages ago (sysbio).

my god…just check grad cafe and somebody posted a bit about WUSTL saying he/she received email that “a decision will be available tomorrow on the website”…I haven’t received such email, but I’m about to crap out now…

@ducphan89

I think Wash U’s trying to make a philosophical decision about admittance. It’s like Schroedinger’s cat. They’re both accepted and not accepted until they log in to the website and collapse the waveform.

or it could be that the decision has been made long before they log in, so there’s no such observer-induced collapse. otherwise, it would be too unfair that one get accepted or rejected based on a random event.

ducphan89 said, “it would be too unfair that one get accepted or rejected based on a random event.”

I must be more cynical that you about this whole admissions process. I think a lot of decisions hinge on ‘random’ factors. lol. Which five random people read your application and decided it was better than some subsample out of the other 700 in the pile. Although, I suppose that’s ‘arbitrary’ and not ‘random’.

Until the concept popped into my head earlier, I never thought of the admissions process as a quantum phenomenon. That’s kind of funny. My application was entangled with me from the moment I sent it off, and whatever happens to my application happens to me instantaneously no matter how far apart we are. lol

lol. “by a random event” I mean the act that one logins to check the result. to me that’s just too random. I do agree with you on the “arbitrary” decision of the committee though.

oh well, let’s hope for the good thing to come.

Someone just said that Berkeley sent out all the interview invites and rejections. I got neither (EECS). I checked the application page and saw no updates. Perhaps they aren’t really done yet after all. Or maybe they just haven’t gotten around to rejections yet. I’ve heard that MIT does acceptances about two weeks before rejections.

I don’t think they were talking about EECS. Nobody has posted any results on grad cafe yet about Berkeley EECS (or Stanford, MIT, or Caltech)

we were talking about UCSF/Berkeley Bioengineering, not EECS.

Hey ducphan89, it was good news! Accepted to Washington University Bioengineering just after midnight.

Or, put another way, I checked and the cat is still alive! lol

First post here, been lurking for a while. PhD for BME here.

I’ve also been waiting for the phone call from BU… Not sure if I should start getting worried…

On your note about Washington St. Louis, I got a email from them last night asking me to check my online application on 1/21 for admission decision… So I stayed up so I could check it by midnight. I submitted my app on the 15th so I thought I must be one of the first wave to be rejected…

To my pleasant surprise, they offered me admission with stipend. The letter says the campus visits are schedule for 2/16-18 and 3/22-24.

Good luck to your WUSTL decision!

Hey sysbio, are you going to any of the visits? if so, which one? Would be great to meet you guys there!

Definitely going, but not sure which one yet. I have an interview just before the earlier date, but I may just make that whole week an ‘interview’ week if I can work my research around it.

did you guys check the application website for this? T_T I checked mine but nothing there yet. Application status says: Completed. no more no less…damn…

I guess since you guys received email but I didn’t, that mean decision was made ready for you guys, but not for me yet. hope I’m still in the gray area and more to come next week.

Just checked gradcafe, looks like Yale is also starting to send out emails about phone interviews… When I visited, they said they would start calling ~100 of their top applicants around late Jan/early Feb to narrow down to ~50 to offer admission.

Fingers crossed for BU and Yale.

Don’t worry ducphan89, according to the gradcafe database, they started acceptances last year on Jan 23rd, and were still accepting students as late as March 8th, so perhaps this isn’t a ‘one-wave’ scenario. (link below)

On my page, below the “Application status: completed” is a new heading that wasn’t there before, “Decision Status: Available beginning 1/21/2012” and a link to the decision letter.

Fingers crossed for you!

thanks. hope so. I guess I should think positively since the cat is neither dead or alive yet.

Hey ducphan89, good luck to you as well. Just saw your background/experience post, besides the GPA and GRE (which the top programs don’t place much emphasis on anyways, especially the GRE), everything else looks great!

I’m also an international student with similar research interest (cardiovascular engineering/tissue engineering). Also used to be premed myself…(all that MCAT prep really made the old GRE seem so much easier…)

Hope to hear your good news soon!

Just got accepted to Delaware Chemical Engineering! 3 for 3 so far but let me not jinx anything =)
