2012 Engineering and Physical Sciences Admission Results

han: UW BioE hasn’t sent out interviews/rejections for domestic students yet, from what I can tell. So not hearing back yet doesn’t mean being waitlisted.

@9000YearOldVegan have you heard anything from Berkeley? I see a lot of people are posting that they got phone interviews

Accepted to UVA chemistry PhD program with TA last Friday!!! Visitation on March 15-16.

Yes, I had a phone interview with UCB

Re: UW BioE accepting international students before domestic students

Almost no schools do this. They all follow the opposite pattern or give decisions at the same time. Hey, I guess at least one school should have procedures that work out in favor for international students…! Good for the 'U’s and 'I’s - from an ‘A’ who hasn’t heard yet.

I guess UW does that way to cut down # of international applicants, since it is always higher than domestic applicants (especially applicants without US degree and apply outside of the US). Idk if it’s in favor for international applicants or not, since it’s sad to receive a rejection letter so early…

Hmm, just realized my voicemail wasn’t set; maybe they called when my phone was off or out of service. What kinds of questions did they ask?

@bkiag:
they will notify you beforehand to set up a time. Also, decisions come out next week <3

Accepted from Univ. Oxford (MS-Biomedical Engineering) and Univ. Sydney (PhD Physics). Waiting for decisions from top schools at USA (PhD-EECS/ECE), but worried of poor test scores!

First rejection came from Princeton! My heart is broken haha im just glad that I got accepted to some schools before my first rejection, otherwise I wouldn’t sleep tonight.

@cheme24: you’re not this person right?

“Princeton Biochemical Engineering, PhD (F12) Rejected via E-mail on 26 Jan 2012 :diamonds: U 27 Jan 2012

Sucks. First rejection.**** Princeton.”

no thats not me haha he/she has applied for biochemical engineering

First-year University of Washington Bioengineering PhD student here… traditionally UW makes decisions on all international applicants before they look at domestic applicants. Internationals are accepted or rejected immediately. Domestic students are either rejected or invited to interview, and then accepted, waitlisted, or rejected following interview weekend (I’m not sure if/how many people are actually rejected after interviews though… maybe if you don’t show up at all/show up wasted/mortally offend a professor). Last year they seemed to send domestic decisions on a rolling-ish basis rather than reviewing all the applications before making any offers, so don’t freak out if you see other people getting interviews or rejections and you still haven’t gotten anything.

@bioenginerd, Thanks for the info. Maybe better luck next year. This may sound crazy, but I would trade anything to be in your position due to family/location issue.

BTW, do you know if there’s any other good BME programs around Seattle? The closest I could find was 8 hrs away and it was Agricultural Bioengineering, not really my focus…

@jparity: wait, does that mean you’re gonna reapply next year, instead of going to WUSTL this year (since you’ve been accepted there already)?

Just got an email invite to the University of Washington Bioengineering program. Wow, I really wasn’t expecting this. Interview is March 22 to 25.

From what I am gathering, if you haven’t been contacted by Berkeley EECS dept. yet, chances are slim for you getting in. Apparently, starting from last year, they added a new policy saying that all new coming students must be interviewed before admission. Some of those who were interviewed have claimed that faculty have told them that decisions will be sent out next week (which is 2/4). I am guessing just for EE there were around 3100 applicants, and there will be 160 acceptances (5.2% acceptance rate) with 80 attending. Any comments?

Thanks for the info, how did you get these numbers?

Nevermind, just found on Berkeley’s website: “For Fall 2011 we had approximately 3100 applicants for about 100 slots.” That’s intense. I can only imagine Stanford and MIT are worse.

you’re talking about doing com sci in a place right around silicon valley’s backyard. Of course people will want to go there.
