2012 Engineering and Physical Sciences Admission Results

spectastic - the true cs bloods travel as far away from their home as possible… MIT

@ducphan89, it’s just a thought for now… maybe I’ll like WUSTL so much at the visit that I will just go there instead.

@sysbio, congrats!

Hi, I want to access my chances, I hope you guys will help me.
I am currently a 1st year master student in an institution outside the US. I have applied to some US universities for Fall 2012 term for MS+PhD, meaning I am applying to start again from MS.

Undergrad GPA - 4.0, Major - Electronics
Current master GPA - 4.0 (1st semester), Major - Microsystems, Semiconductor Devices
GRE - 1470 (Q - 800, V - 670, W - 4.0)
Research - None in undergrad. Doing some research now in collaboration with MIT, however no papers yet. Interested in semiconductor devices and photonics. Took some courses (and taking some) that they teach in US institutions to Device and Photonics grad students : Micro/Nano processing technologies, Microelectronic Devices, Advanced VLSI devices, Photonic Material and Devices and Nanoelectronics. Knowledge of cleanroom operations.
Recommendations - All 3 from my undergrad institution professors who are not known internationally.

Applied to:

 1. U Illinois
 2. Northwestern
 3. U Florida
 4. Virginia Tech
 5. Vanderbilt

I am thinking of emailing some professors of these universities to talk about my research interests and possible opportunities as RA. However, they do not reply normally. Any tips?

@ioekodude: you have no worries. Just do your best. And most importantly don’t compare yourself to others.

Thanks dude. My current master program is in collaboration with a top US university, so we take all their courses, but I am not comparing.
Has anyone applied to these universities? or is anyone a device major and has applied some other university? I think there are less students, both international and domestic, who are interested in specially solid state electronics (I might be wrong, but I see more students applying to wireless, robotics, signal processing, circuits, etc). But again, these are good universities in this field, so the competition is intense, specially between international students.

@ducphan89, @jparity

I know UW (5th) is ranked higher than WashU (bounces between 10th and 16th over the years) but the systems biology faculty are more accessible at WashU. There are some great faculty at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in Seattle, even several affiliated with UW as faculty, but none are available for thesis work in the BioE department for whatever reason.

For example, I had 5 people on my list that (1) I was interested in working with, (2) are at the ISB, (3) are affiliated with UW, but I can’t work with them as a PI in BioE. Three of them are profs in the MCB department (which I was rejected from) and the two that are faculty in BioE are only ‘affiliated’ faculty and so they can not be your main lab. UW limits you to ‘core’ and ‘adjunct’ faculty, so even faculty in other departments are technically out according to their policies.

I’m looking forward to the interview at UW so I can clarify some of these policies, see how set in stone they are, and see if the remaining faculty member or two really have compatible interests with mine.

since sysbio was talking about this, I just wanna chime in a bit about UCI for those who applied here for BME program. at UCI, grad students can choose either core faculty or affiliated faculty after 1st year of rotation. my current PI is an affiliated faculty of BME (he’s the department chair of MBB), but our lab is doing a lot of tissue engineering projects. imo, UCI has a lot of cool affiliated faculty members for BME. especially for those who are interested in laser/optics, UCI has a really strong program for this area and a lot of famous faculty member working at the Beckman Laser Institute. the tissue engineering area is growing pretty fast here as well.

Hi all! New to the forum. I was wondering if anyone had been invited for interview, accepted or rejected for Biomedical Engineering PhD from the following schools:

UC San Diego
University of Pittsburgh
Purdue University
University of Utah
Carnegie Mellon
University of Illnois-Urbana

I’d appreciate any information.

Thanks in advance!!

reese: I heard back from Utah (acceptance) on the 19th. I don’t know if they’re still accepting, though. I’ve seen acceptances for UCSD and Purdue on gradcafe as well.

not that I know from Pitt. I applied to Pitt as well, but haven’t heard anything back yet. nothing on gradcafe either. for UCSD, it seems like quite a lot of people have received acceptance or rejection already.

There’s one post on GradCafe about a UPenn BioE acceptance (not mine). So looks like they’re starting…

same thing for Pitt…one post on gradcafe for interview March 1-3 (not me)…looks like pretty much all the schools I applied are replying back, but I haven’t heard anything yet…

Yeah, I haven’t heard anything back yet from any of those schools. I did, however, call the schools today to check status. In the process, I found out that UPitt doesn’t show my application in their system, but the online app shows it was successfully sent. I asked them (UPitt) what I should do and they basically told me there was nothing they could do if it doesn’t show up in their system. Nice! Also, some of the other schools never received my official GRE scores either, so good times. I have re-ordered the scores to be sent, but it will be a few days. Anyone know if this will negative impact my chances of being accepted?

@reese8089: huhm…that’s weird. surprisingly Pitt and WashU are the 2 schools I feel that they do excellent jobs in organizing application documents and stuff, at least in my case.

Nothing here for UPenn BioE. I’m not great fit there, though. HST MEMP will be sending out interview invites at the end of the week for those who applied.

UCSD has sent out invites. MIT BE has sent out some invites too. This about all I know.

Also, ducphan - Reichert isn’t taking any students this year; found that out at the interview weekend.

Yeah, it strange. I spoke to someone from the company that handles the application site and she said she saw my application when she in as herself and when she logged in as if she was from U Pitt, so I am really at a loss.

Has anyone heard when MIT might be releasing their ChE PhD decisions?

@thumper99: thanks for the info. that means my chance at Duke is super slim…I only mentioned Truskey and Reichert on my application, both of whom I’m very interested to work with…

Has anyone heard from Michigan Applied Physics? I haven’t seen any acceptances on Gradcafe. Has anyone here applied to this program, and if so, can you post yours stats?
