General Comments: Yesterday night, I saw the message at the UCLA decision site as, “we have received your application, we are still in the process of reviewing.” Other people on cc thought it meant I wouldn’t get into my major. When I made posts earlier this year about my chances, a lot of people stated oh, your chances are whatever, oh your gpa is a little lower, oh this and oh that. Part of the reason was I of course asked the questions and should have expected this. My point is, don’t really listen to too many people on College Confidential in terms of your chances and when you have weird circumstances. No one really knows. CC is simply a great way for you to understand what you need to do to have a chance at getting in. Your gpa will matter of course, but show admissions that you have character, want to expand yourself, and that you wish to learn and be successful. Write good statements, be yourself and you’ll get in. I can’t stress this enough.

Decision: Accepted
Decision Date & Time: (4/20/2012 5:59PM)

Objective:

UC GPA: 3.71
Major Pre-reqs Completed: Yes
Intended Major: English
TAG?: N/A
IGETC?: Yes, after the spring semester

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): English Club, Sports
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: None
Personal Statement: English major quality, so very good

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): U.S.
School Type: CCC
Ethnicity: Chicano
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Below 50k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): first generation college student
Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): Hell yeah!

Reflection

Strengths: I have to say that my personal statement was my strength. I talked about how my teachers did not expect me to succeed academically because I was categorized as a remedial student. So, in the latter part of my essay, I described how a “remedial” student was able to prove to his doubters that he could achieve greatness and, ultimately, apply to this prestigious university, with an eye to conquer obstacles and go beyond his limits.
Weaknesses: Extracurriculars
Why you think you were accepted: I have to say that my personal statement was my prime reason why I was accepted.

General Comments:

“If thou regrett’st thy youth, why live?
The land of honourable death
Is here:–up to the field, and give
Away thy breath!”
~Lord Byron

Congrats to all those who were accepted! I hope to see you all at UCLA, soon!!!

Quick ? (perhaps someone could direct me to a better thread for information)

I am TAP-cert, so I applied to TFT 1st choice, Art History in L&S 2nd. I ended up not submitting TFT supplements so I ruled that out early, but my admission decision yesterday only mentioned the rejection from TFT, not L&S. I called the TAP office and they told me L&S decisions weren’t out yet and that they would trickle out through the end of April. But clearly, those decisions are out. Anyone else in the same boat (non-L&S 1st choice, L&S 2nd)? Any info or advice about 2nd major consideration?

The second batch is out today. I got decision pending yesterday. I was kinda nervous. What a beautiful day. I got accepted today.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, it’s philosophy. I took a lot of philosophy classes (I’m transferring with 8 of them, they only need 4), which is good. However, I probably could have gotten in with the bare minimum.
[/ul]General Comments:

If you’re not a hard science major (AKA anything that will get you a job quickly after graduation), be sure to have some sort of plan.

I am going to ask a question here and hope that anyone can help resolve it. So far, I have been accepted by UCLA, UCSD, UCD, and I am an international student. On these congradulation letters, I have not seen any mentions about merit scholarships which I applied. Will the financial awards accompany with the mailed packages?

Assuming international students aren’t rerouted to some shady corner of the school’s websites and see the same pages as everyone else:

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Maintained academic excellence despite personal and familial struggles (Yes, they were evident, not exaggerated. Be honest with your personal statements and make sure you come across as being one. The more genuine you are, the better, IMHO.)
[] Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): Heck yes!
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personal statement, volunteer work related to major, psychology awards, being consistently included in the Dean’s list
