2012 Presidential weekend

Yes, tell your daughters to wear appropriate dresses/ skirts. Last year some girls had on very short mini skirts, no hosiery, etc. that looked kind of tacky. It’s not necessary for girls to wear a business suit, a nice dress or skirt will do.

My dd will be attending the scholarship weekend Feb. 10-12th. We live in the central Ohio area and my husband and I will be driving her down. She’s really looking forward to it!

She applied ED, so we know for certain she will be attending HPU. I took her down last spring for an open house weekend, but my husband didn’t come with us. So, he’s looking forward to hearing Pres. Qubein speak.

DD is not sure of a major yet- education, biology, and business are areas of interest. When do they decide which professors the students interview with? I’m not sure what she’s listed on application materials, etc.

Also, should she bring a resume with her? I would think that might be helpful. I think I’ll have her do a “mock” interview with one of her school administrators. She’s a smart kid, but she might get pretty nervous…

I highly recommend that you and your son attend the Presidential Scholarship weekend if possible. It will be a treat for both of you. We live in Southern California, so I can understand your concern with the distance. My daughter and I attended last year and she was awarded a generous scholarship. If you look at the award amounts on the web site, they were right on as far as her financial award. My daughter is now a freshman at HUP and loves it.

Also remember that the UC system in CA is not cheap after you add up all of the associated costs, as well as the fact that most students do not graduate in four years. Remember that HUP is an all-inclusive price and the students get a great education. By the way, my daughter also lives in the University Center and loves it. I hope this helps!

High Point University also encourages applicants for the Media Entertainment Fellows Program. As of this current school year, HPU selects sixteen Communication majors, all freshmen, and places them in a living-learning program called Media Entertainment Fellows. Eight boys and eight girls, all representing different tracks of the school of communication, live on the same floor (next door to each other) and are the only students i their respective communication classes. The director is the former Vice President at NBC and Lifetime studios, with her graduate degree from Harvard University. The program, though for strictly Communication students, also provides the students with guaranteed internship opportunities. Right now, I believe the students holding very big positions at various local service institutions (Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, etc.) and this upcoming summer the Media Fellows will be interning at both the republican and Democratic conventions. In addition, they will spend the upcoming summer with internships in LA, NY and an international internship. There is a scholarship offered for the program as well. Every year HPU will seek 16 more students for the program. Only incoming freshman can apply. Its the first year the program is around and although it hasn’t received much publicity, it is an incredible opportunity and all those who completed the Presidential Scholarship essay had an opportunity to apply. HPU has an incredible communication school and being in this program, in my opinion, is an incredible and honorable opportunity.
