Last day before October 9/30

Hey everyone, I have a question. I took a class 3 years ago and got an F. About 3 semesters later, I retook the class and got an A. When I list my coursework, I’ve noticed that my GPA goes down when I put the F on this class. But when I put AR (academic renewal) as my grade, the GPA goes up since it does not include the grade that I got in the class. And then, I asked the transfer center in my CC on how to deal with it. They told me not to put the class at all on the semester that had the F grade. I didn’t wanna follow their advice since I’ve heard stories of being denied admission even if you’re TAGged because of unreported grades in classes.

Does anybody know how to deal with this situation? Any help would be appreciated.

^You don’t wanna do that. I did the same thing, and then went to the submit page on the TAG today, and got this message pop-up…

When listing your self-reported academic record, you need to list all the collegiate courses in which you’ve been enrolled, regardless of the grades you earned. Be sure you have included:

All collegiate institutions in which you’ve been enrolled
Non-transferable courses (you need to add them manually)
Courses in which you’ve earned D or F grades (even if you later repeated them)
Courses in which your record indicates W (withdraw) or I (incomplete) grades
You are required to include all courses and grades that are reflected on your official transcripts from all collegiate institutions in which you’ve been enrolled. If you’ve omitted any information, please go back and correct your self-reported information before you submit your TAG application.

Your TAG application may be denied for failure to provide complete and accurate information.

OMG, just got back from my TAG workshop.

man my counselor, tiny older asian lady - very sweet. BUT she is SO INEPT! inept in the requirements of TAG. what she said is that on the UC TAG MATRIX revisions page for UC Davis is that you can have a 2.9-3.2 and i was trying to tell her, i think that that was the PAST GPA, and she really was firm with her belief. I felt so confused and dumbfounded.

@Thedon if you repeated class list the F. Then when you get to the semester where you retook the class enter in the A. The system will ask you is this a repeat course? There will be a drop down box where you will see the course with the grade of F. You select that class and hit submit. The F will no longer be factored in to your GPA and under the F it will say “repeated spring 2011” or whatever semester you repeated it. I would be cautious listing it at as AR unless it is listed as such on your transcript. I hope that made sense! I’m typing this on my phone.

@kitty you are making me feel very lucky for the excellent transfer counselors I have. I’m sorry you have to do deal with that.

Lol kitty, I am in the same situation this morning, when the transfer center at my school was filled with people who came to have a counselor double-checked their TAGs. One of those clueless counselors still announced that we need a 3.0 to TAG to UCSD lol. I feel bad for the kids who submitted their TAGs to SD and then have their TAGs rejected…

And most counselors don’t even know that SB and SD allow students to use their after fall GPA…

whoa are you serious! SD is like the most popular UC to be knowledgeable of IMO.

these counselors need to step it up for real, because whoever those students are that submitted that will be rejected are going to have pitchforks at those counselors homes or offices this winter.

I’m hearing from reps tho, the TAG applicants this year are project to be significantly lower to a number of schools, and just in general. I guess the pattern will go every two or three years there will be an explosion.

blahhh im so wacked from stress, which school are you looking at again?

When does decisions for tag come out?

^ Around mid-November they will send you some kind of confirmation. Btw, it’s called Transfer Admission GUARANTEE so if you satisfy all the requirements, you know you’re in, save all the stress for normal application in November lol

What do you mean? Which one I’m tagging with? UC Santa Cruz I aim quite low, but seriously I love bay area and don’t have any interest in going south lol, except for UCLA

SC is the bay too?

Yeahhhhh for me at least lol. Just an hour away from SF and 30 minutes from San Jose :D

this should be stickied. I’m seeing a big influx of TAG question threads arriving, ha.

OKAY. So, I have a series of questions. I’m going to do the UC Davis TAG and I was wondering about the Unit Review for the application. This is mine.

GPA: Completed: In Progress/Planned: Total:

ASSIST Certified Courses: 3.21 54.00/ 81.00 26.00/ 39.00 80.00/120.00
Non-ASSIST Certified Courses: 2.76 8.67/ 13.00 0 8.67/ 13.00
Total Courses: 3.15 62.67/ 94.00 26.00/ 39.00 88.67/133.00

Advanced Placement (AP): 8.00/12.00
Total Exams:4 8.00/12.00

Overall Total: 3.15 96.67/145.00

They don’t count AP so my total so far is 3.15 GPA and 88.67/133.00 Units. Do they completely ignore the Non-ASSIST Certified Courses? Will the thing they look at be 3.21 GPA section? If it is I will meet all the requirements. With the non-Assist certified courses I went to Cal poly slo fall 2009 and they put me into major classes so they’re not certified for sure (ERSC 144/SS 121) but I also took GEOG 250 which is simply physical geography. Umm… If they do accept some of those Non-ASSIST Certified Courses, how will I know? Do they only look at the Assist Certified since it’s been known already that they disclude the AP Test credit? Also, what do the numbers represent in the credit area… for example 96.67/145 What do the two numbers mean?

The Requirements for UCD Tag is taking no more than 120 quarter units, and having a 3.2GPA by the end of this summer – which I achieved, but if they for some reason DO include ERSC 144, SS 121, GEOG 250 from Cal Poly SLO it’ll F*** everything up. Any thoughts?

Also, Does the TAG look at IGETC? or do they only look at the major pre-reqs that you were supposed to take as told by assist?

How do we certify courses that are un-certified? My Physical science for IGETC would be my Physical Geography that I took at Cal poly during my first and last quarter there during fall 2009

Follow up:

As you saw in my first post, With Certified courses, I am at a 3.21 (3.25 now, I updated my Summer grade) which meets the requirements for the TAG. On the certified courses though, I am at 80.00 / 120.00. A uncertified course [GEOG 250 Physical Geography(4.00un) @ CAL POLY SLO] is needed for my IGETC certification, but if it is considered “Certified” then I will be over my unit capacity. Any insight? Is IGETC required for TAG?

Furthermore:

I can decide not to take a course, but then that will hinder my chances of getting into UC Irvine, while still unharming my chances of getting into UCD. The course is MicroEcon and UCI wants me to take it, while UCD gives me a choice between two classes, the other of which I have taken so it won’t affect my chances for UCD TAG, but what I’m scared of is if it’ll be worth it to not take, considering UCI wants that course to be taken for my major? It’s a double sided blade if I am comprehending my classes correctly. On one hand, I’ll be below the unit capacity for UCD TAG whose limit is 120, but then I will be missing a class listed on ASSIST for the transfer to UCI.

With all this information, some may recommend me to e-mail / call a counselor. Who do you recommend I email / call? The Community College counselor? or UC Counselor? or some TAG people? I would appreciate insight on this, thank you very much!

(Stream of consciousness post – sorry if it doesn’t make sense gramatically.)

PS: My major is International Relations / Studies.
