2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

First of all I want to say thank you to whoever takes the time and helps all of us asking questions, it really is helpful.

I am applying to UCLA, UCB, USC.

I was wondering about my chances of getting into one of the above universities, I have been nervous as it is nearing time to transfer.

42 units completed (all pre-req.'s/required classes are being taken/or completed -Calculus 1&2, Econs, Acct.'s, etc.)

3.978 G.P.A. (yes had one teacher give me an A- lol).
Will be transferring for Fall 2012!

Interned 3 months at non-profit loan org. (It was awesome)!
Part of honor society, & also a business club
Tutored for 6 hours a week during 2nd semester (Pre-calc. (2), Statistics (2), Econ (2))
I was also a mentor to children aspiring to be young entrepreneurs (or teaching them about). Also awesome opportunity! (NFTE program)

I do attend a C.C. college (should help). Attended 2 C.C.Cs.

I do also have one semester where I withdrew from all my classes (got all 3 W’s) due to a family issue and subsequently traveling.

Will be taking Calculus 2 (Math Analysis 2) and Spanish 2 (both pre-reqs) last semester before transfer (colleges won’t see grade received though I’m sure I will do fine).

Other than that, I am a decent writer, not superb by any measure. But will take my time and sure to write a descent prompt.

UCB is my dream school. Let me know what you think!

Again, Thank you all for helping, you all are great people!

P.S. uckitten I don’t have a 4.0 lol

Need Assistance.

Unless you’re actually going to get Academic Renewal (i.e. the process of filling out paperwork that removes the old grade from your transcripts, without you having to retake the course), you need to put the “F” down for Spring 2011. When you get your Fall grades, you will have the option of entering the new Calc 2 course as a repeat, and the old course will not be considered in your GPA.

Be honest, save yourself from worry when you have to send your official transcripts in and they don’t see an “AR” but an “F” for Spring 2011 - Calc 2.

Hi everybody :)

Junior transfer Fall 2012 from CCC

School + Major:
UCI - Business Administration
UCLA - Business Economics
UCR - Business Administration
UCSB - Economics & Accounting

No TAG (don’t have enough units)

GPA: 4.0, hopefully the same by semester’s end

IGETC + Prereqs will be done by Spring 2012 (an accounting class, a business class, and 2 IGETC classes)

EC: *Link crew leader in high school *Spanish club (3 years) *Co-owner of a small distribution business with mother *Just started a part-time job as a cashier at a fast-food restaurant

Personal statement: Strong

My main concern is the number of units I have already completed and my ECs. I didn’t take many classes my first year, and as a results, most of my units are being completed this and next semester. I do have 16 units worth of AP credit to rely on though. As for my ECs, I worried I don’t have too many.

dj71091, I’d say yes to UCR & UCSB, More than likely NO to UCLA but possible yes to UCI. The reason is because your GPA is low, you seem uncertain about your future GPA and even with it’s rise it isn’t that competitive enough for UCLA (not to seem like a harsh jerk). You have extensive EC’s which might help you for UCI but they have been quite a while back, maybe they are still relevant, only time will tell tho right? Good luck pal.

collegeisheaven, no 4.0 but your application seems quite swell, plus you didn’t even mention your major. you basically do have a 4.0 it just seems your teacher gave you an A-. Maybe someone else will be able to help you.

jnguyen471, my buddy j, whats up, hope to see you next year at UCI or at UCSD, as those are my tops too, but even tho you are my pal, I have to say its a bit rough looking for UCSD for you and UCI as well, BUT you have the pre reqs completed and according to ALOT, UCI is a reject school of UCLA? blahhhhh. Still HOPE you get into UCI though! Wouldn’t surprise me if you did  Keep us updated, OH and write a KILLER personal statement for that UC app!

nazzyjoon, blahhh, 3.57 anthro major/philo major & IGETC certified = you are good.

fish10113, agreeing with others, your GPA is a bit low and is very competitive, but you have ASSIST finished soon and IGETC finished, you MAY Have a chance, MAYBE. Write an excellent Personal Statement, maybe some of Wei Li’s services will help you get a better chance.

Thank you very much for the reply. 3.1 with psych major to UCI. What do you think the outcome would be of that.

no problem. ummmm psych…3.1

well if they finish strong this semester, IGETC completed and pre-reqs done with a good PS and maybe a fairly well EC to help boost and they might have a fair shot.

Hey guys, I just recently registered on this site after months of poring over these forums and decided it’d be nice to have a voice haha.

Anyways, I’m a full-time college student at Santa Monica College and am planning on majoring in psych. I am applying to Berkeley, UCSB (applied for the TAG), UCSC, and UCD, with my top choices in that order. Here’s a quick run-through of my transcript:

3 AP’s in high school: US History, English Literature, and European History. Passed with 3’s on each.

3 college courses during high school: Computer Science 801 (Intro to Computers)- A; Sociology 1- A; Psych 1- B. 9 units total from here.

Currently have 33 credits completed from SMC and am working on 13 units this fall semester. I only need two more classes to fulfill my IGETC which I will take this winter and next spring.

Most prereqs are completed for transferring to Berkeley as a psych major with the exception of a math and science class (as aforementioned I will be taking them this winter and spring) and also for SB.

Here’s the issue that has me worried: I have A’s and B’s in all my courses with the exception of my math and science classes. It kills me because I excel in every other class that isn’t completely objectively based (which partly explains my interest in majoring in psych) and no matter how hard I work on my math and science, I’ve always struggled with it throughout my academic life. I took a precalc class my first fall semester (fall 2010) worth 5 units and completely bombed it with a D (I know only a bad worker blames his tools but this professor was just beyond ridiculous when it came to grading.) Although I should have tried to retake this class before applying this fall, I already had a specific list of courses I was planning on taking and could not find the room to squeeze another semester of precalc in. So instead I’m going to retake it next spring (spring 2012) which would be the semester before I transfer. But if this didn’t screw my GPA over enough, I took a biology class for non-biology majors worth 4 units this past summer (summer 2011) that met three times a week at night for three hours while working my 8-5 job five days a week, and I got a C.

With all that said and done, my overall GPA as of now is 3.12 and the D and C are what’s really dragging it down. But even though I’m clearing up the D next semester my counselor told me that the 3.12 is the GPA they will look at. (On a side note, on my TAG application it interestingly enough adds up my GPA from the college courses I took in high school- and it bumps it up to 3.54. Anybody know if they only take the GPA of your current school into account, or overall college courses?)

Extracurriculars: I don’t know how much they take your high school involvement into account but back in high school I was in student council for 3 of 4 years and was treasurer for one of them, helping raise over $10,000 for our class; I was also in a variety of clubs and was a board member on a couple of them. I played sports consistently throughout my life including a couple years of high school baseball. I’ve also been constantly working since 11th grade, first as a caterer and then as a camp counselor, and then recently as a cashier at a restaurant. I volunteer at the local temple on holidays helping to distribute meals to those in need. Oh, and I also enjoy taking long walks on the beach. (Hahah couldn’t help myself)

Based on this, what are my chances of Berkeley, or at the very least Santa Barbara?

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys! Good luck to everyone in their endeavors.

anyone want to help me out as well?

3.87 UC gpa
4.0 major gpa
All pre-reqs completed by spring. Finishing all pre-reqs in fall except for Calc. 2
(The only reason I have a 3.87 is because I got a C in a math-analysis class i took 4-5 years ago while I was still in high school -_-‘’)

Personal statement:
I am going to write about how growing up in an abusive family and the suicide of one of my younger brothers affected my decision into pursuing a psychology major so I can help other children in similar situations as myself.

Thank you!!!

-Looking around some more-
What do you guys think about a 3.09, potentially 3.38GPA, applying for Global Cultures, East Asian Cultures, International Studies and Korean Literature and Culture? I think all those will satisfy what I want to go with.

Also, again for UCLA’s Linguistics and Asian Language and Cultures?

Pretty much just clubs: Korean Club and stuff for EC. Did some Spanish tutoring. 100 volunteer hours from highschool.

Pre-reqs will all be done before transfer. I think I just need an English class and the Korean class.

Personal statement… ehhh? I don’t know. I’m an okay writer.

ALSO, side question. I go to two schools and I can join Alpha Gamma Sigma. College A is my main school but I was planning on joining College B’s AGS. Is this going to be cited on my application since I am sending transcripts from both schools.

@wizard55: I see you getting in at UCI, UCSB,UCSD. That’s a great gpa, but do you have any extracurriculars? UCLA and UCB are always iffy even if you have great gpa especially with your major. HAAS is probably a slight reach since alot of people who apply there have gpa’s like yours and outstanding ec’s. You have a better chance at getting into UCLA that UCB. I’m thinking you might be able to get in at UCLA if you write a great personal statement and have ec’s you haven’t listed since you have TAP.

@ misswaters: Definite yes of UCSB but you know that since you’ve got TAG. It’s seems like a pretty strong application for all the schools you listed. Especially if you write your personal statement well because you have a strong topic to talk about. You pretty much have nothing to worry about except keeping your grades up and that personal statement

@iwillflyby: I’m not sure if UCLA checks transcripts before or after this fall when deciding. I’d be nervous for you if they only checked your gpa right now and decided acceptance or rejection on that 3.09. That gpa is on the low side, but that major isn’t one of the hard ones to get into. Overall, I think it’s definitely possible for you to get in, but don’t count on UCLA. I can’t help you with that AGS stuff.

@whatdowomenwant: I doubt you’ll get in at UCB unless you get extremely lucky. I’m confused as to what your gpa really is on your application? 3.12 or 3.54 because that’s a big difference. If its 3.12 I think it’ll be difficult for you to get in at UCSB or UCD for Psych. I don’t think they take into account what you did in high school, only what you do in college. You can try and put that stuff in though. With that gpa, I think you should try for the lower UC’s like riverside and merced at least to make sure you can transfer somewhere. I think your best chance is at UCSC out of the ones you listed.

@ whatdowomenwant: First of all, very cool sn lol! As for your chances, yes, all of your college grades count when transferring, pending they are UC-transferrable. That said, you should have a 3.54 GPA as long as those were college courses. Btw I did middle college, so I definitely get what you mean with hs + CCC simultaneously.

Psych, as you probably know, is impacted at many of the UC’s which makes it relatively difficult to transfer into. You’re in at UCSB, especially because you tagged. Berkeley is another story. It has about a 22% acceptance rate for psych majors. I would know because I am a psych major lol. That said, it’s one of the most competitive majors to get into.

If Berkeley is genuinely what you want, I’d advise applying as a double major (Psych & X with few prereqs) << like philosophy, ethnic studies, rhetoric, etc. I advise these majors because they have much lower admissions requirements. The average phil major to Berkeley normally matriculates with around a 3.5-3.6 CCC GPA…if you have a 3.54 you’re right in that range. Philosophy, for example, also has only 3 prereqs and odds are they aren’t offered at your CCC…they’re very rarely offered anywhere, so you won’t be penalized for not having them done. That said, if you applied as a double major, but put philosophy/rhetoric/ethnic studies as your primary major for Berkeley, I would say that your chances do improve significantly. Just make sure that you do have -some- interest in your potential double major and include that in your Personal Statement.

Essentially, you can double or drop 1 of the majors when you get to Berkeley. However, if that’s all way too much work and you don’t care that much about not getting into Berkeley, then stick with UCSB and you’re good to go!

Best of luck to you! :)

@ wizard55: You’re in everywhere. Haas is your only slight reach because I don’t know how good your personal statements will be on the Haas app, and I don’t know any relevant work experience you may have had. Overall your GPA is great when considering the upward (perfect) trend.

@ misswaters: You’re in everywhere you’re applying to.

@ iwillflyby: Close one. If you get a 4.0 this semester and achieve that 3.38 GPA, I’d say you have a shot at UCLA’s linguistics program. You’ll be a long shot, but not by much. Your upward trend will be regarded favorably, and you clearly have devotion to what you’re studying judging by the interdisciplinary (but similar) focus of your studies. UCLA does consider fall 2011 grades before deciding to admit you or not. Do your best this semester. The average GPA admitted to Linguistics + Asian emphasis is a 3.54 at UCLA. You’ll fall below that, but you’ll have done what you can to make yourself competitive. Write a great personal statement - you will probably need that.

Reposting this :)

May someone please chance me? I’d appreciate it.

School: CC
Will be applying to: UCSC (sociology), UCLA (women’s studies), UCD (sociology) and other privates

Tagged with UCSC

Applying as a Junior

Cumulative GPA: 3.1

ECS: MEDPEP at UCLA, CCM (planning to run for office), N.A.M.I, Circle K, Honors program (will be honors certified by next Spring), a whole bunch of clubs in high school. Volunteer at an elementary school. Planning on applying to a volunteer program at a hospital.

Fall Units: 13 units

Pre-req: Most done, I believe I only need one more.

Personal Statement: Don’t know. I was planning to write on my molestation and keeping it a secret for 12 years, but I don’t know. I suppose, I don’t want them to think, “Oh, another pity story”. I was depressed for quite some time, hence my GPA being crap, and even resorted to self-harming, because I didn’t know how to deal with what had happened. I’m finally able to talk about it and not feel ashamed.

Oh my upward trend was 2.1 -> 3.38 hopefully in the past 3 semesters. Going to two schools and stuff to.

@ James: Are you applying to Haas? I don’t see it listed there. Personally, I think you’re in at all the UC’s you listed. UCLA isn’t going to like that you have 2 prereqs going on simultaneously in your final semester…they’re very finicky when it comes to prereqs. I think you’ll get in…but I have advice just in case.

I was initially rejected from UCLA because they said I was missing a prereq…that prereq I was taking spring semester. I called (three times), got them to pull up my application/transcript (finally), and they admitted that they had “thought” I was missing a prereq, but it was clearly in progress. I appealed and got into UCLA.

I think you will get in, but in case they decide to push you over to the reject pile…and probably (if anything) about prereqs, call and ask why you were rejected.

You’re good go to. Best of luck!

@ Stressy: I’m really sorry to hear about that time in your life :-/. Major kudos to you for being resilient and achieving despite the circumstances.

You’re definitely in at UCSC. Very big reach to UCLA. I’d say you’re about 50-50 for Davis, but leaning to no due to your GPA and the competitiveness of sociology.

Thank you, I truly appreciate it!

At least I’m in somewhere! Hahah. I’m just ready to transfer, but I also don’t want to give up before trying. I’m a Sagittarius, so naturally I’m optimistic, although blindly optimistic at times. I was able to achieve a 3.81 last semester…so I’d like to think I’m capable of doing well. As for Sociology being competitive, geez, I really had no clue. Looks like it’s somewhat impacted at Davis. I’m definitely switching to another major for Davis now. Thanks for the heads up. :')
