really? thanks so much guys. thank you vikram298 and eggyham for your reassurances. I was really worried that I didn’t have a shot. I know its really cheesy, but I’ve had a really hard couple of years with my illness and chronic pain and life traumas, and all that has been keeping me going is the idea that i may still be able to go to ucla and get the amazing education i have always dreamed of. It may sound over dramatic, but today was a really hard day for me, and just knowing that i have a solid chance really makes things easier to cope with. Are u sure my lack of GE classes wont be an issue? I have been freaking out about this. Thanks again.

LMAO. You have a 4.0. There’s absolutely no way UCLA will accept you. If you were a 3.8 yeah maybe I’ll chance you. 4.0, no. Calm yourself.

thanks eggyham. I am calm now. This site is great. So much great information on here and you guys are really nice. thanks. i will stop being over dramatic now.

If only UC’s offered Sarcasm as an alternate major.

@EggyHam: LOLOL

Is it me or has CC been less active lately? I remember back in 08-09, everyone was posting like crazy.

Yeah hahaha CC has. I agree!

Eggy… yeah I read that thread already. I got one good post from it. A guy guy accepted to UCLA with a 3.36 on Linguistics and Anthropology, no TAP.

Awesome! Depending on how impacted it is at UCLA, imagine how good of a chance you have WITH TAP. Yay happy for you :)

Yeah. Oh and what about like pre-reqs…
What if the college site says you need equivalent of six terms in a foreign language and like a year in another language.

Let’s say I’m taking the Korean track, but I can only do the first two semesters of Korean because that is all that is offered. And also, I took 4 years of Spanish in HS, the 4th being AP and passing it. Will they look at the pre-reqs that I don’t have… or I meant not look at it because it’s not there…?

Well if your school doesn’t offer it, then it’s fine if you don’t complete them. You’ll have to do it at UCLA once you get accepted. UCs religiously use ASSIST.ORG.

Yeah but if you check Linguistics and Asian languages and culture at Assist.org, there are no set of classes shown. They just give you one paragraph of explanation and stuff. not like the usual, take these classes that are equivalent to these classes in UCLA.

That means there is either no pre reqs for the major, or the pre reqs requirements are not offered at your school.

^^^exactly!

Well… that sucks? Either I have to take more classes in the university and spend more money or it’s easier to get in to. HAHA. I was actually told by the guy that he had to retake his Intro to Ling class at UCLA.

You’re fine
Don’t worry. Look at it this way: Once you’re in, you’ll take those classes and get them over with. Taking them at your CC might lower your GPA…let’s say you get a B instead of an A. Who knows. Don’t worry! And UCLA is heavy on PRE-reqs so if you’re school doesn’t offer it, they’ll understand. By the way, have you cross enrolled at other CC’s? I heard they LOVE when you attend other community colleges to finish a couple of PRE reqs your home CC doesn’t offer.

HAHA. I’m enrolled in two colleges. ![]()
And it’s because they don’t offer Korean on my primary college. And I’m finishing my second Korean semester of Korean by the end of Spring. And my primary school offers Psycholinguistics, Intercultural Linguistics and Linguistics Anthropology while my second college only offers Intro to Linguistics.
I’m actually making use of my time. It’s hard though, coz I have to make them accommodate each other. And I also take public transportation to go in between schools.
So I’m like at school from 8AM to 8PM everyday except Friday. I was planning on saying this in my PS.

UCs: UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCSD, UCSD
Major: CHINESE B.A.
Current GPA: 3.64
Number of transferable units taken: 50 + 14 for the spring semester = 64
IGETC: 3 courses left. Will be done by Spring semester.
Major Prep.: No courses articulated. I wanted to know why, so I contacted the Asian Languages and Cultures department of UCLA. According to the ALC department, they only offer very few lower division courses for the language major, so that is probably the reason why there aren’t any courses showing up. They told me to focus on finishing my IGETC requirements and taking as many language courses possible. And that once I get transferred they will put me through a placement exam to see what level of Chinese I am in.

Others: No extracurricular activities, no club involvement, no scholarships, no tap, no tag, etc…
I’ve been in AVID (advancement via individual determination) for 4 years in High school. Will talking about AVID in my application effect my chances of getting in? I doubt it will :

UCLA is my top choice and I plan to transfer as a CHINESE major. Using the above information, you think I would have a high chance of being accepted?

iwillflyby: HECK YES you’re on the right track.

Chenjiaxing: I’d say you’re in at all since that’s not impacted anywhere. Oh and people get into UCLA with linguistics with a 3.3+ so I’d say youre good to go my friend.

@EggyHam: Awesome, and thank you. I have another question though. I want to know how much of a impact my personal statement will have on my transfer application?

You’re welcome
UCB and UCLA are the only UCs that will read your personal statement. They make a HUGE impact. My UC application workshop coach said you should be very detailed. And don’t sound like every other applicant. Everyone says they want to help people. that’s what most applicant says. Be yourself and be unique.
