2012 Transfer Chance Me! Thread

^ newsoul:

Without going into too much detail (as their is no need), you’re going to get in everywhere. Make sure to really nail the personal statement. It is apparent english is not your first language. I’m weary of the idea surrounding you being an immigrant and your acknowledgement of different cultures as it seems like every immigrant writes about that. I would focus more on a life changing experience which really opened your eyes instead of the cliche “visiting a new culture that opened my eyes in understanding people.” Everything else looks great!

^ Transfer2Best

I’ll consider that. I honestly kind of think it makes sense to write about something personal even if it isn’t totally unique…and most of that prompt really isn’t about being an immigrant as much as it is about Deaf culture, but I’ll think about it. Thank you so much. Also: Is it really that obvious? I attended a British international school when I was younger, so I always thought my English was basically at a native speaker’s level…I hope it doesn’t show too much in what I wrote for my prompts.

please chance me im back on page 29

@newsoul

Your grammar is not the best but as long as you keep revising the prompt you should be fine.

@tomatoman

I usually only chance people whose major I am familiar with. I really have no idea about Chemistry.

Applying: UCSC, Davis, Merced, UCSD, UCLA, UCB (JUNIOR TRANSFER)
Major: History
Ethnicity: Mexican (1st Generation)
Age: 23 now, however by the time I transfer I will be 24.

Currently at East Los Angeles City College
Current GPA: 3.75
Estimated GPA at the end of Spring 2012: 3.8-3.85 (conservative estimate)
Will be IGETC certified by spring 2012.
Prerequisites finished with a 4.0

HONORS:
Dean’s List

ECs:
Work full time for the past 5 years (since I graduated from high school)
Volunteer at Placita Olvera (a church in downtown L.A) handing out food to homeless people.
105 hours of volunteer service at 2 convalescent homes.

The only drawback is that I have 26 W’s from the years 2006-2010 (I haven’t received a W since spring 2010).

During the time I received the 26 W’s I was severely depressed because I was sexually abused as a child, and I never received help (I still haven’t). And also within that time frame my mother became ill. So I had to support my entire family. I must say that it was really difficult because I had to handle 50+ hours at work, and provide for my ill mother, my disabled brother, and my schizophrenic aunt – all while handling school, and trying to live on my own. Then out of the blue in the fall of 2010, my mother recovered. So I had the opportunity to stop working and move back home to focus entirely on school.

Now, like many of you I have aspirations of transferring to a top school, but unfortunately my academic record will affect me even though I have shown an upward trend by not receiving any W’s.

What do you guys think? Any and all input will be appreciated.

Hi guys, I already know I will be admitted into UCSD due to TAG, but my admission into the major is not guaranteed so can anyone chance me on the likeliness of being accepted as a Biology major?

Applying: UCSD (TAG), UCI

GPA: 3.6~3.7

Major: Molecular Biology (impacted major @ UCSD and UCI)

Alt Major: Biochem - Pharmacological Science

Yrs at CC: 2

Tag: Yes

EC: Was working part time during my 2 years at a CC… that’s about it.

IGETC: Will have completed by Spring

1) UCSD will be highly selective in which transfer students will be admitted into the Biology program and with that said, is my GPA in the safe zone?

2) I’ve finished most of my major prereqs. I still have OCHEM and all of the physics series left to finish. Will this hurt my chances?

@vanquish: I’m pretty sure you’ll get in with that GPA even if you haven’t done your OCHEM series. What did you use as your alternate major?! I’m assuming chemistry? Make sure it’s a non-impacted major. (Chemistry is non impacted)

Applying: UCLA, UCB, UCI, and UCSB
Major: Sociology
Second major: Anthropology
GPA: 3.93
Years at CC:2
IGETC: complete
Assist: complete
By spring I’ll have my A.A in Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Level 1 child development certificate

ec: I have a lot. for ex. dean’s list, honors program, 300+ hours of volunteering in high school and now in college 150+ hours in community service, officer of different clubs etc.

I really want to go to UCLA, chance me please!

@Transfergod,

Don’t worry, if you have a 3.93 gpa and have all the pre reqs done…you’l be in! Im 90% sure you 're going to be admitted to UCLA!!! Congrats on your high GPA! Ave. GPA for sociology is only 3.73

What do you guys think:

Major: Sociology (not impacted)
GPA: 3.3
Applying: UCSD (top choice)
No tag :/

Do you guys think I’ll get in? It’s not impacted.

=\ I wouldn’t think that your chances are too high Acoustickitty123. GPA isn’t too competitive, not having TAG won’t help your chances either. What are your extra-curriculars? If you can spare the admission fees, I’d apply to other UCs along with UCSD just in case.

I think that UCSD is estimating that the GPA cutoff will be approximately 3.4+ this year. That’s what one of their ad coms told me last Friday (xFer Fridays @ UCSD). She said that they weren’t sure, because they can never really tell until all of the applications have been evaluated, but this was based on their applicant pool last year (the non-TAG cutoff was 3.8 last year, due to overwhelming numbers of TAGers - which is why they upped the TAG GPA).

She also said that UCSD is attempting to withdraw from/discontinue the TAG program for 2013.

It would be kind of crazy if they did discontinue TAG. I get the vibe that they really dislike participating in the program.

Statistics:
APPLYING TO: UCB (Sociology, maybe Psych?), UCLA (Psychology), UCSD (TAG, Sociology), && UCD (Psychology)
GPA: 3.73-3.78 (depending on 2011 Fall grades)
Major GPA: 3.8-4.0
Have taken all the psychology classes (UC TRANS.) offered at my community college which is about 6-7 classes. (Received all A’s)
I have received 5 W’s, Received 4 D’s (Retook all of them and got A’s), A high upward trend from first semester until now 2.0 < 3.4 < 3.6 < 3.8 < 4.0
I understand W’s and D’s look bad…hopefully I have made this up with great EC and a high upward trend

PLEASE CHANCE ME! I am very nervous. :/

it’s my personal opinion that personal statements are the most insightful piece the admissions people have to look at you. if your numbers are close, it’s more important how you bring them together vs how they stand on the paper.

not sure if that makes sense, i just finished up a large midterm paper and i’m frazzled.

all of you TAG’rs just be happy that you’ll be in a bomb school if all else goes to hell. just do your requirements - they’re not hard.

What’s the cutoff for UCD without tag?

The cutoff for UCSD without tag LAST YEAR was a 3.8 for IMPACTED majors. I’m a non impacted major. And remember that UCSD only focuses on your GPA. They can care less about EC’s and personal statement. Im assuming the 3.5 tag wi give a lot of other low GPA students an easier way into UCSD since a lot of tag people won’t be applying to UCSD. Last years GPA cutoff was a 3.2 for non impacted. Hopefully it stays the same.

PSYCHBRUIN you’re in at all.

@Acoustickitty123: Do you think that I have a shot at Berk w/ Psych? Or should I stick with Sociology? &nd, do you think because I got two W’s within this year that I might get rejected? I also have 4 D’s…
**EDIT:I have 4 W’s and 4 D’s in all.
RETOOK all the D’s and got A’s.

Also, don’t they give a section on the app for academic history where you can essentially tell them what happened with everything?

Thank you so much! :]

Does anyone know what is the average gpa for econ, management science for ucsd to get accepted?

Psychbruin: someone on here wrote the average GPA of admitted sociology major was 3.7 something:) I really do think you have a great shot. How’s your ECs and personal statement? I think as long as you showed improvement, you’re good. P
