ok. Thank you so much for all the answers! I appreciate more than you know.
& I in my personal statement i want to write about overcome some difficult circumstances, some of which took place during that semester, so I’m thinking about writing something like “many of the hardships I faced took place during spring of 2011 which contributed to the lower grades…i know i can do better…blah blah” stuff like that? Would that be acceptable?-like, is that the sort of thing they look for in that section? Sorry for all the Qs its just nice to have clarity!
I WANT UCLA SO BAD :(

Depends what you mean by hardships. Death of a close family member? life threatening illnesses? In those cases it might be a good idea to write about those and how you overcame it. I don’t think it’s a good idea to simply say you can do better, better off to prove it by getting straight A’s from now on.

Major: CompSci/CompGameSci
School: UCI/UCSB/UCSD/UCLA/SLO
GPA: 3.43
EC: applying for intern currently. Beside that i don’t really have any work experience beside working on addon and stuff for games.

@Mistax I’ve heard some crazy acceptance stories that make me optimistic so I’d say if you get that internship and try to do some volunteering and talk about some sort of great story/experiences in your PS, you can honestly get into them all. GPA is extremely important but if theres nothing you can do about that aspect, add other things to your app and you could potentially get in everywhrrree.
But def get more outside experience especially for the higher ranked UCs like LA & such

Applying to: UCLA and UCI

1 year of o-chem complete.
2 semesters out of 3 completed for physics

Some other info:
Math club officer for 3 semesters
Working on campus as a general chemistry tutor for 2 semesters

Chance me? Thanks.

@isthisreallife

I think you’re a shoo-in for UCI, and that you have a very, very good shot for UCLA. We have similar stats and majors, actually. Best of luck to you!

@mistax

Do you think you could get your GPA to a 3.5? How many of your pre-reqs do you have completed?

@lalaman

If you can finish your math by the end of winter 2011 and have your grades ready by the transfer application update in Feb 2012, then I think you’re good for most of the schools you’re applying to.

Anyone know anyone who got into UCLA Linguistics and Asian Language and Cultures. Or have any personal idea if it’s hard to get in…?

Since I already applied last year, I can give you my stats and results.

Applied as a Econ major to: UCSD, UCI, UCLA, and UCB

gpa: 3.89
IGETC was done prior to applying
Only one pre-req was missing (calc 2) which I completed this past Spring
TAG at UCSD and UCI
TAP certified for UCLA
and TAP for Berkeley
EC: Completed Honors program, tutor for econ dept, econ club speaker, assistant to head chair of econ department.
Recognitions: Academic Excellence Award in Economics, two scholarships relating to econ/business, and one general achievement scholarship.
Personal Statements wer3 great imo

Results:
Rejected by UCI and UCLA.
Accepted to UCSD and UCB

It’s quite competitive out there, so step your game up guys.

You can get rejected even with TAG?

I did. lol

how did you get rejected?

@ asphyxiac

Thanks man!

Yeah I’m really hoping that I will have no problems getting into UCI since I will be completing a TAG with them. UCLA is the number one choice though.

Good luck to you too!

I’m not sure UCkittychen. I don’t really remember what the rejection letter said but it was somewhere along the lines of it being a competitive year and so on. I didn’t bother to look into it either.

you cant be serious.

so are you at a UC now?

i dont understand how you don’t look in-depth to a rejection letter to a college that entered into an agreement with you that guarantees your admission as long as you fulfill their preliminary requirements.

Yes, I start classes at Berkeley on the week of 8/21. Well for UCLA, I knew that econ was very competitive so I wasn’t too surprised. I was surprised by UCI’s decision since I completed all requirements. I could have found out why but I had to wait until sometime in May. UCI was my last choice and I had already been accepted to UCSD so I didn’t really care for a reason. Once I heard from Berkeley on 4/30, then I had no further incentive to look into any of it.

Does anyone know if I stand a good chance of getting into any UC with a 3.199 for math? I won’t be able to attend school in the fall because of my surgery so my GPA will stay where it is at until I apply which is a 3.199 UC transferable and a 3.36 cummulative.
Can I tag with a 3.199 or do I need a 3.2 exactly?
Thanks ahead of time for any anwsers.

Well i have all my comp sci class done / comp arch/ and up to calc2. for ucsd/ucsb im missing physics + some math classes for UCI i’ve met their requirement + i’ve complete recommended course and only missing discrete or linear algebra.

@mistax

Oh, so if you did your physics and linear algebra/math stuff, you could very likely get your GPA up by a decent amount. I would say go for it, because it will significantly increase your chances of acceptance at UCSD (via their TAG - they have a great CS program). UCLA requires all pre-reqs to be completed, and I think their program is pretty competitive (~3.7 on average or something), so I have no clue about that one. If you have the coursework done for UCI, then you should get in there - your GPA is high enough as is, though Bren ICS has a fairly high mean admit-GPA (I think around 3.5?)

@Tonio: you just made my anxiety a million times worse! haha you were such a strong applicant ***??
You said your PS were good but what sort of things did you write about? I keep hearing LA loves cheesy stories about overcoming difficult times while Berkeley isn’t quite into that stuff & looks more for solid, practical stories. I mean it’s just something I heard but maybe that had a little bit to do with it?

I’m so much more stressed than I was before
lame.
